DESCRIPTION:Duke Music Masterclasses are free and open to the public.\n\nC
 ellist Darrett Adkins performs around the world as a soloist and chamber 
 musician. He has performed in US premieres of concertos by Donatoni\, Wal
 lin\, and Nordheim\, as well as world premieres of concertos by Andrew Me
 ad and Jeffrey Mumford. He gave the first NY performance of Berio's Seque
 nza XIV and the US premiere of Messiaen's Concerto for Four with the Aspe
 n Festival Orchestra. From 2018 to 2019\, he undertook two 14-city tours 
 of China\, and alongside Robert Spano\, premiered Stephen Hartke's Da Pac
 em\, a cello concerto co-commissioned by Aspen and Oberlin. In 2017\, alo
 ng with Timothy Weiss and the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble\, he re
 leased Myth and Tradition\, featuring Wernick's Concerto for Cello and Te
 n Players and world-premiere concertos by Philip Cashian and Su Lian Tan\
 , both commissioned by and dedicated to Adkins. His recording\, Hypersuit
 e\, places a contemporary cello recital within the framework of Bach's Se
 cond Suite and features works by Carter and Adriana Verdié. He has perfor
 med for King Harald of Norway\, received a Cultural Arts Grant from the A
 merican-Scandinavian Foundation\, and was the "Cellist of Honor" at the 2
 002 Rio Cello Encounter. As a former member of the FLUX Quartet\, he gave
  the first complete performance and recording of Morton Feldman's Second 
 Quartet. With the Lion's Gate Trio\, he developed "Ode to Joy\," an annua
 l chamber music festival at the Hartt School. Adkins is on the teaching f
 aculties of Oberlin College\, the Juilliard School\, and Aspen Music Fest
 ival and School. \n\nDarrett Adkins will perform as guest artist with the
  Duke Symphony Orchestra on Dec. 7 at 7:30 pm in Baldwin Auditorium. Info

  The day's events conclude with Ian Clarke performing selected works. \n\
 nIan Clarke is acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in the
  flute world. His compositions have been performed across five continents
  on stages ranging from London's South Bank to the Glastonbury Rock Festi
 val and have been featured in countless recitals including four consecuti
 ve BBC Young Musician Woodwind finals. These wide-ranging published works
  are establishing themselves as some of the most exciting flute repertoir
 e of today.\n\nIan has performed as a featured guest soloist and teacher 
 at major conventions and events in Canada\, Italy\, Brazil\, France\, Ice
 land\, Slovenia\, Hungary\, Netherlands and numerous times for the Britis
 h Flute Society (BFS) and for the NFA (National Flute Association) in the
  USA - including in New York 2009 and at Caeser's Palace Las Vegas. His a

  class is presented in association with DUMIC (Duke University Musical In
 strument Collections). \n\nKeiran Campbell\, a native of Greensboro\, NC\
 , studied extensively with Leonid Zilper\, former solo cellist of the Bol
 shoi Ballet\, before receiving his Bachelors and Masters at the Juilliard
  School\, working with Darrett Adkins\, Timothy Eddy\, and Phoebe Carrai.
  Keiran also spent several springs in Cornwall\, England\, studying with 
 Steven Isserlis and Ralph Kirshbaum at Prussia Cove. He now is based in T
 oronto\, Canada\, where he performs as a core member of Tafelmusik Baroqu
 e Orchestra. \n\nKeiran has performed with ensembles including The Englis
 h Concert\, NYBI\, Philharmonia Baroque\, The Boston Early Music Festival
  Orchestra\, Four Nations Ensemble\, and Les Violons du Roy. He recently 
 performed with Le Concert Des Nations under Jordi Savall\, touring Europe
  performing Beethoven Symphonies before recording them on Savall's new Be
 ethoven CD. During his summers\, Keiran has performed with Teatro Nuovo\,
  Lakes Area Music Festival\, and The Carmel Bach Festival. He is also on 
 faculty at the recently formed\, UC Berkeley-based\, Chamber Music Collec
 tive\, which focuses primarily on post-1750 performance practice.  Recent
  performance highlights include concerto appearances with Tafelmusik and 
 Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra\, a concert of Monteverdi Madrigals with J
 ordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations in Carnegie Hall\, a solo recital 
 with fortepianist Sezi Seskir at the Berkeley Early Music festival\, and 
 performances of Handel's Saul and Solomon with English Concert at the BBC
  Proms and Edinburgh Festival.\n\nKeiran maintained a private teaching st
 udio in New York City\, and he recently gave masterclasses at UNC Chapel 
 Hill\, Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester\, Western University
 \, at Tafelmusik Winter Institute\, and at Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Inst
 itute.\n\nKeiran plays on a cello made in 2018 by Timothy Johnson\, and a
  1780s bow attributed to the Dodd family\, which was purchased in part th
 anks to a grant from the Ontario Arts Council.

 Professor of saxophone and Associate Dean at the School of Music at the U
 niversity of South Carolina\, Clifford Leaman received the Master of Musi
 c and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in performance from the University o
 f Michigan. He has served on the faculties of Furman University\, Eastern
  Michigan University\, and The University of Michigan prior to his appoin
 tment at the University of South Carolina. Leaman is in great demand as a
  soloist and clinician and has performed and taught throughout the U.S.\,
  Canada\, Italy\, Spain\, France\, Slovenia\, Sweden\, Australia\, Columb
 ia\, Croatia\, Thailand\, Tiawan\, and China. He performed as a concerto 
 soloist with the ShenZhen Symphony Orchestra\, at the XII and XV World Sa
 xophone Congresses\, and the North American Saxophone Alliance's 2006 and
  2014 Biennial Conferences. Leaman has released four critically acclaimed
  CDs of works for saxophone and piano on the Equilibrium label\, and has 
 also performed extensively with percussionist Scott Herring\, giving conc
 erts and masterclasses throughout the world as the RoseWind Duo. \n\nJose
 ph Lallo is the Saxophone Lecturer at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Mus
 ic and Artistic Director of the Melbourne International Saxophone Festiva
 l. Passionate about performing new music\, he has commissioned and premie
 red over 50 works for saxophone\, and his 2021 recording for ABC Classic 
 was featured in their 'Best of Australian Classical Music' playlist. Jose
 ph is a member of the chamber music ensembles Collide\, with cellist Yeli

 for Instrumentalist across all genres (Bending Light: Sonic Prisms for So
 lo Flute\, AMP Recordings) and selection into the first round of the Gram
 my nominations for Best Classical Instrumental Solo (Vāyu: Multi-cultural

 nShe is the recipient of numerous international grants and awards from or

 orromeo String Quartet. He is also Artistic Director of the Heifetz Inter

DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Thron joined the North Carolina Symphony as Principal C
 ellist in 2000. She is an active chamber musician locally and plays frequ
 ently with the Mallarme Chamber Players. She is a member of Three For All
  which is a clarinet trio with her husband\, clarinetist Fred Jacobowitz 
 and pianist Anatoly Larkin. During the summertime Bonnie has been a guest
  artist with the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival in Harrison Maine for ov
 er 20 years. She has also been a regular guest on the Washington Musica V
 iva series. Previously Bonnie was a member of the Peabody Trio\, in resid
 ence at the Peabody Institute\, during which time the group won the Naumb
 erg chamber music competition. Early in her career Bonnie was assistant p
 rincipal cellist of the Denver Symphony and she played and recorded with 
 the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble. Bonnie has performed concertos with the Nor
 th Carolina Symphony\, the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble\, the Juilliard Orche
 stra\, the Panama National Orchestra\, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra\, a
 nd various other orchestras in North Carolina and her original home state
  of New Hampshire. She received both a bachelors and a masters degree fro
 m the Juilliard School. Her teachers include Lynn Harrell\, Norman Fische
 r and Elsa Hilger.

DESCRIPTION:Ari Streisfeld of the Duo Cortona treats the Department of Mus
 ic to a violin masterclass\, where he will provide feedback to the class 
 participants.\n\nViolinist Ari Streisfeld has garnered critical acclaim w
 orldwide for his performances of diverse repertoire and has established h
 imself as one of the foremost interpreters of contemporary classical musi
 c. Praised for his "dazzling performance" by the New York Times and "scin
 tillating playing" by New York Classical Review\, Dr. Streisfeld has tour
 ed worldwide as a founding member of the world-renowned JACK Quartet. Tog
 ether with his wife\, mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway\, Dr. Streisfeld form
 ed Duo Cortona\, a contemporary music ensemble dedicated to the creation 
 of new works for the unique instrumentation of mezzo-soprano and violin. 
 He is also a member of Shir Ami\, an ensemble dedicated to the performanc
 e and preservation of Jewish art music. Dr. Streisfeld frequently collabo
 rates with some of today's leading ensembles\, including Ensemble Signal\
 , International Contemporary Ensemble\, Wordless Music Orchestra\, and We
 ekend of Chamber Music. Hailed as "imaginative" by the Los Angeles Times\
 , Dr. Streisfeld's arrangements of madrigals and motets for string quarte
 t by Machaut and Gesualdo have been performed to acclaim both at home and
  abroad. He has recorded for Mode\, Albany\, Carrier\, Innova\, Cantaloup
 e\, Another Timbre\, New Focus\, and New World Records.\n\nA passionate a
 nd committed music educator\, Dr. Streisfeld holds the position of Associ
 ate Professor of Violin and Violin Pedagogy at the University of South Ca
 rolina School of Music. He also serves as head of strings at the Carolina
  Summer Music Conservatory\, Music Director for Point CounterPoint (Vermo
 nt)\, and is on the faculty of the Cortona Sessions for New Music (Italy)
 . \n\nDr. Streisfeld holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music (Bach
