DESCRIPTION:Part of the Rfun series. Flexdashboards and Shiny make it easy
to transition from analytics to online dashbboards using R without havin
g to learn HTML\, CSS\, and javascript. This workshop provides an overvie
w of felxdashboards and the shiny framework to demonstrate the possibilit
ies of creating dashboards in R. Experience using the R statistical langu
age or CDVS's R for Data Science Series are helpful. All are welcome\, bu
t this workshop is not designed to provide training on using the analytic

DESCRIPTION:What's the difference between mentoring and coaching? In US hi
gher education\, "mentoring" often implies role-modeling and offering adv
ice\, whereas coaching is an increasingly popular\, evidence-based method
to empower people to be accountable for their own growth and development
. Unlike role models and advisors\, coaches listen more than they talk. T
hey ask powerful questions\, and create lots of room for people to reflec
t and see things in new ways.\n\nIf you'd like more strategies in your me
ntoring toolkit--especially in cases where you'd like mentees to take mor
e ownership of their progress--this workshop is for you. We will spend ti
me in small groups developing our active listening skills\, and also prac
tice a few basic coaching conversation models. We will also discuss how m
entors might apply a "coaching mindset" to their work as mentors more gen
erally.\n\nModerator: Maria LaMonaca Wisdom\, Director of Faculty Mentori

DESCRIPTION:Whether or not you have "post-tenure blues" or "midcareer mala
ise\," likely your busy schedule has left you no time to reflect on signi
ficant career transitions. Very often\, faculty reach mid-career operatin
g under the same assumptions-and relying on the same strategies and skill
s-that got them through graduate training and the pre-tenure years. This
workshop offers mid-career tenured faculty dedicated space and time to re
flect on some big questions\, in a mutually supportive group of peers: \n
\n• What have been your most significant accomplishments and challeng
es to date? \n• What's different for you now\, than it was in the year
s leading up to tenure? \n• What does "flourishing" look like\, 3-5 ye
ars from now? \n• What people and resources can help you achieve your
goals? \n \nPossible takeaways from the workshop include a sharper focus
on priorities and goals\, realignment of what you do with what you value
\, an enhanced sense of community\, and practical strategies for maintain
ing a reflective practice on your work and career long term.\n\nModerator

DESCRIPTION:Scholarly journals evolved in a print world where they had to
be selective and do a lot of review and filtering up front\, because of p
hysical limitations on how much they could publish and distribute. In a d
igital world\, these constraints are no longer necessary\, opening up spa
ce for innovation and improvements. Nowhere is this clearer than in the r
ecent growth of preprints\, where authors take control of when to share t
heir work. But in a world where preprints are commonplace\, what is the r
ole of the journal? eLife\, a not-for-profit\, peer-reviewed\, open acces
s scientific journal for the biomedical and life sciences\, has been expl
oring this question\, and recently announced new changes to its model to
focus on detailed preprint assessment instead of binary accept/reject dec
isions. This lead to a great deal of discussion in the community about ho
w journals could or should work\, and the pros and cons of this kind of m
odel for researchers\, research assessment\, and science more broadly. Da
mian Pattinson\, Executive Director of eLife\, will be in Durham on Monda
y March 20\, and will join members of the Duke community to explain the n
ew eLife model\, what it aims to do\, and to engage us in conversation ab
out it. Come with your questions and ideas\, and learn more about a poten
tial new model for scholarly journal publishing.\n\nThis event will be he
ld in The Edge Workshop Room (Room 127) on the first floor of Bostock Lib
rary on Duke's West Campus. It is open to members of the Duke community a
nd anyone interested in this topic.\n\nThis will be an in-person event. M
 asking is encouraged.

DESCRIPTION:Computational research techniques such as text and data-mining
hold tremendous opportunity for researchers across the disciplines\, fro
m mining scientific articles to create better conduct systematic reviews
to better understanding of how concepts of gender\, race\, and identity a
re shared across popular literature over time. Unfortunately\, legal barr
iers to text and data-mining often hinder research\, in some cases haltin
g it altogether\, and in other cases causing researchers to bias their wo
rk by only relying on textual materials thought to be "safe" from copyrig
ht problems.\n\nThis lunchtime workshop will survey the existing law and
policy and highlight pathways forward for researchers under existing law\
, including fair use and TDM specific exemptions to copyright\, with a sp
ecific focus on creating and using textual datasets. We will offer a hybr
id attendance option\, but the workshop will be hands-on\, so we encourag
e in-person participation. We are also offering a second workshop on Apri
l 4 on legal issues with TDM for images and audio-visual materials.\n\nTh
is workshop is led by Dave Hansen\, Executive Director of Authors Allianc
e (https://www.authorsalliance.org/)\, a nonprofit that exists to support
authors who research and write for the public benefit. Dave is a copyrig
ht expert who has worked extensively on legal barriers to research\, and
is a PI for the Authors Alliance Text and Data-Mining: Demonstrating Fair
Use Project\, which is generously supported by the Mellon Foundation.\n\
nLunch will be provided.\n\nPlease RSVP at https://duke.is/2bpvj so we ha
ve an accurate count for food.\n\nFor virtual attendance\, please registe
r for the zoom webinar here: https://duke.is/72r8s\n\nThis event is organ
ized by Duke University Libraries and the John Hope Franklin Humanities I
 nstitute.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces the use of the R language for produci
ng maps. We will demonstrate the advantages of a code-drive approach such
as R for visualizing geospatial data. Participants will gain the skills
to quickly and efficiently create a variety of map types for a website\,
presentation\, or publication. In addition to working on hands-on coding
exercises\, we will also review practical guidance on designing effective
maps. Attendees will need basic familiarity with R and RStudio to follow
along with the exercises. Knowledge of tidyverse packages such as ggplot
2 and dplyr is also helpful. This event is open to non-Duke participants.

through to the Khemetic\, Biblical\, Quranic\, and Andalusian periods. "A
erolith & Black Box" is sure to grip the imagination through its theoriza

ary verticalities.\n\nSoloyman Idris pens for online and academic journal
s and lectures in the Middle East\, the Caribbean and the United States.
He is editor of the small press Lumifont Scriptorium and author of The Su

DESCRIPTION:Research data have value beyond their original purpose and by
sharing or "publishing" your data you can support open science\, reproduc
ibility\, and future innovation. This workshop will explore strategies an
d best practices for formally publishing your data in a data repository.
Topics covered will include new modes of publishing in academia\, the use
of data and metadata standards to support interoperability and harmoniza
tion\, an overview of repository options and key features\, examples of d
isciplinary repositories\, and data publishing methods to increase the im
pact of research projects and support the FAIR Guiding Principles (i.e.\,
  Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable). Participants will
engage in a break-out activity where they will practice finding and asse
ssing data repositories using their own data/research area. We are also h
olding an online version of this workshop on March 7 (10-12 am) (https://
duke.libcal.com/event/11636697) where participants will engage in a simil
ar exercise but using general case studies. This event is open to non-Duk
 e participants.

DESCRIPTION:Visualization is a powerful tool for helping us understand com
plex information quickly\, and with that power comes responsibility. Even
well-intentioned visualizations can be misleading. We will present pract

This event is
  open to non-Duke participants.
