DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: "Ajeeb Aashiq // Strange Love" (Natasha Mendon
 ca\, 2016\, 70 min\, India\, in Hindi w/ English subtitles\, Color\, DCP)
. "Ajeeb Aashiq // Strange Love" is award-winning filmmaker and visual ar
tist Natasha Mendonca's groundbreaking debut feature film. The world prem
iere took place at the 45th International Film Festival\, Rotterdam\, Feb
ruary 2016 and was nominated for the Bright Future Award. The cast of the
film includes Mumbai-based Khush Mishra and singer-songwriter Suman Srid
har in a lead role with her original music alongside theatre actor Jim Sa
rbh. "Ajeeb Aashiq // Strange Love" is a tale of unrequited love\, betray
al\, and friendship. A stylish working class transgender man\, Khush cros
ses paths with Bollywood singer Suman in a contemporary portrait of Mumba
 i. The cinema-verite style film chronicles Khush's journey of becoming a
man and Suman's critique of hetero-patriarchy through her creative voice.
The intimate gaze of the film paints a compelling portrait of a city han
ging in the balance\, skewed by poverty and class divide on the one hand\
, united on the other hand by the characters' longing and pursuit of a ut
opia. // "The search for identity\, happiness and love\, Natasha Mendonca
's contemporary portrait of male-female relationships and alternative lif
estyles in India is unique\, strange\, original and particularly provocat
ive. A real discovery!" - Pink Screens (Brussels) // Trailer: https://mub

. \n\n"Dream Empire" follows Yana\, an ambitious young woman who leaves h

real estate market. Yana opens an agency designed to aid Chinese develope

DESCRIPTION:Film Screening: "Films for One to Eight Projectors: Multi-Proj
ector Experiments by Roger Beebe"\n\nFor the first time since 2011\, film
maker/curator/professor Roger Beebe returns to Duke (where he received hi
s PhD in 2000) as part of a 3-month\, 3000-mile East Coast roadshow of hi
s multiple-projector performances. The program features several premieres
of new works alongside some of his best-known projector performances (in
cluding the six-projector show-stopping "Last Light of a Dying Star") and
recent award-winning work in single-channel HD video. These works take o
n a range of strategies from formalist investigations of the materials of
film to essayistic explorations of popular culture and a range of topics
from the forbidden pleasures of men crying ("Historia Calamitatum (The S
tory of My Misfortunes)") and the secret logic of the book of Genesis ("B
eginnings") to Las Vegas suicides ("Money Changes Everything") and the re
al spaces of the virtual economy ("Amazonia").

DESCRIPTION:A powerful and thought-provoking true story\, "Just Mercy" fol
lows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle
for justice. After graduating from Harvard\, Bryan had his pick of lucrat
ive jobs. Instead\, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned
or who were not afforded proper representation\, with the support of loc
al advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first\, and most incendiary\,
cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx)\, who\, in 1987\, was sentenced
to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl\, despite a prepo
nderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only tes
timony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the year
s that follow\, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and polit
ical maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter\
, and others like him\, with the odds-and the system-stacked against them
.\n\nPlease stay for a Q&A following the film with Shelagh Kenney\, Direc
tor of Post-Conviction Litigation at the Center for Death Penalty Litigat
ion and Trey Walk\, Justice Fellow at the Equal Justice Initiative.
