DESCRIPTION:Program: Luna\nRunning time: 65 minutes\, no intermission\n\nL
una explores the truest form of man. Choreographed by Bulareyaung Pagarla
va\, dancers trek and search in the mountain mist under the moonlight\, s
inging soul-guiding chants while demonstrating a pure body gait of labor.
Pagarlava and the dancers went deep into the mountains in central Taiwan
\, to learn how to survive in mountainous forests in the Luluna village o
f the Bunun tribe in Nantou County. They collaborated with the Luluna Bun
un Choir and sang ancient Bunun chants\, which have been listed as a Cult
ural Heritage in Taiwan. From daily chants to the "exploit-boasting" acts
of traditional hunters\, they incorporate dance arts into the Bunun cult
ure to reflect the tradition\, reflect the contemporary\, and allow dance
rs to explore and return to their inner selves.\n\nADF offers a 20% disco
unt to Duke employees and $20 tickets to Duke students. To access your di
scount\, just log in with your Duke Net ID at tickets.duke.edu. Tickets o

DESCRIPTION:Composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and 2024 Pulitzer Prize win
ner Tyshawn Sorey and his all-star trio-pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist H
arish Raghavan-join forces with the visionary ensemble Sandbox Percussion
to celebrate the centenary of legendary drummer\, composer\, and innovat
or Max Roach.\n\nA bebop pioneer\, Roach collaborated with jazz greats in
cluding Duke Ellington\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Charlie Parker\, and Theloniou
s Monk. But this concert shines a light on his groundbreaking work as a d
rummer-composer with M'Boom\, the revolutionary percussion ensemble he fo
unded in the 1970s. Touring throughout the '70s and '80s\, M'Boom redefin
ed the role of percussion in contemporary music\, inspiring artists for d
ecades to come.\n\nThe evening opens with the Tyshawn Sorey Trio performi
ng music by or associated with Roach. Sandbox Percussion continues the tr
ibute with arrangements inspired by Roach's legacy\, and Sorey concludes
the program with Cogitations\, an original work honoring Roach's enduring
  influence.

DESCRIPTION:A unique integration of hip-hop mixology\, new music\, dance t
heater\, and integrated media visuals\, this world premiere of time/life/
beauty by Michael Sakamoto and Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky) is inspired
by the music and artistry of legendary composer\, musician\, and activis
t Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952- 2023)\, whose long and varied career in multipl
e genres and media surpassed definition. This project channels the artist
s' shared and distinct approaches to interdisciplinary performance\, inte
 rcultural dialogue\, and social concerns.\n\nTracing Sakamoto's creative\
, cultural\, and social concerns\, the artists unpack and embody the nuan
ced connectivity among languages and forms of expression\, environment\,
science\, and culture. How do shared languages form between creators and
communities? How do individual and collective human behaviors influence e
cologies small and large? What is the relationship between community\, pl
ace\, and the larger environment over time?\n\nDuke Arts is proud to spon
sor this production and host the dance-theatre premiere of time/life/beau
 ty.

DESCRIPTION:The robots are coming and they're getting smarter\, evolving f
rom single-task devices into machines that can make their own decisions a
nd autonomously navigate public spaces. Whether you find it exhilarating
or terrifying (or both)\, progress in robotics and related fields like AI
raises new ethical quandaries and challenges legal codes created for a w
orld in which a sharp line separates man from machine. Dr. Darling will e
xamine why people fear some robots and empathize with others\, and answer
s questions about what society's relationship with these robots could loo
k like in the future. \n\nEndowed by Robert R. Wilson\, this prestigious
lecture is open to the public and the entire Duke University campus. This
lecture series brings speakers to campus to highlight important conversa
tions in public law. Event partners for this lecture include the Sanford
School of Public Policy and Duke Deep Tech. For questions about this even

DESCRIPTION:Led by the celebrated vocalist and luminary Julia Keefe (Nez P
erce)\, the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band brings charisma\, passion\, a
nd purpose to every stage-leaving audiences both inspired and educated. T
his all-star ensemble of Native and Indigenous jazz musicians celebrates
the genre's deep Indigenous roots\, performing works by trailblazers like
Mildred Bailey (Coeur d'Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke)\, alongside
contemporary composers.\n\nSince its 2022 debut\, the band has earned nat
ional acclaim\, including a featured set at the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou
Williams Jazz Festival. Each performance both deepens and challenges our
understanding of the "uniquely American" art form known as jazz.
