DESCRIPTION:MFA|EDA Salon \nProgram #3: The Neural Aesthetic with Gene Kog
an\n\nCurated by Sarah Riazati\n\nSeating is limited\, RSVP is requested:
mfaedasalon@gmail.com\n\nOver the past several years\, two trends in mac
hine learning have converged to pique the curiosity of artists working wi
th code: the proliferation of powerful open source deep learning framewor
ks like TensorFlow and Torch\, and the emergence of data-intensive genera
tive models for hallucinating images\, sounds\, and text as though they c
ame from the oeuvre of Shakespeare\, Picasso\, or just a gigantic databas
e of digitized cats.\n\nThis talk will review these developments through
the lens of creative\, exploratory research. Artistic metaphor helps clar
ify that which is otherwise shrouded by layers of academic jargon\, makin
g these highly specialized subjects more accessible. A selection of exper
imental projects at the intersection of AI and new media art will be show
n\, including several real-time interactive demos. It will conclude with
a survey of interdisciplinary tools and learning resources for artists an
d data scientists alike\, offering an accessible introduction to this fie
ld.\n\nGene Kogan is an artist and a programmer who is interested in gene
rative systems\, computer science\, and software for creativity and self-
expression. He is a collaborator within numerous open-source software pro
jects\, and gives workshops and lectures on topics at the intersection of
code and art. \n\nSalon website: http://www.mfaedasalon.org/

DESCRIPTION:Contested Lands reflects artist Peter Goin's photographic work
bearing witness within Nuclear Landscapes and along the U.S.-Mexico bord
er\, from the project Tracing the Line. Presenting newly restored images\
, this presentation focuses on bearing witness to contested lands\, to th
e perilous sublime\, and to these places that define us as a culture.\n \
nThe large-format photographs from the Nevada Test Site\, the Hanford Nuc
lear Reservation\, the Trinity Site in New Mexico\, and at the Marshall I
slands' Bikini and Enewetak atolls precede an abbreviated black and white
narrative of the entire length of La Frontera. These landscapes have bec
ome icons in mythic story-telling and political theater.
