DESCRIPTION:Slavery scholars estimate the U.S. enslaved population tripled
following the abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in 1808. This a
ggressive population growth was achieved in part by forced breeding of en
slaved people.\n\nIt is anticipated that the multigenerational records of
the Massie family in Virginia provide evidence of slave breeding by ensl
avers in the U.S. \n\nHolistic review and interpretation of the Massie pa
pers suggests a century-long slave breeding system that birthed more than
350 enslaved children. Jobie Hill's project\, Demystifying the Rhetoric
of Slave Breeding\, examines the paper trail left behind by the Massie fa
mily\, looking specifically at the who\, how and when.\n\nHill's goal is
to use Massie slave journals\, including the never-studied Stock Book\, t
o explore the role their content played in building and securing the pros
perity of slavery through reproductive labor.\n\nREGISTRATION\n\nRegistra
tion is requested. Please register at https://duke.is/b/2534\n\nABOUT THI
S SERIES\, FIRST MONDAYS AT CDS\n\nDuke's Center for Documentary Studies
(CDS) is currently supporting three Ph.D. student fellows who are pursuin

DESCRIPTION:Juanita Kreps Gallery\nDuke University Center for Documentary
 Studies\nOn View: March 22 - April 13\nGallery Hours: 10:00am - 6:00pm\
nArtist Talk: April 13\, 2:00pm\n\nelemental addresses the transitioning
of the body in form and matter. After experiencing lifelong genetic illn
esses and a Category 5 hurricane that destroyed my family's home and busi
 ness\, I searched to find peace\, acceptance\, beauty and connectedness i
n life\, death\, the forces of nature and the Cosmos. My work emerged fro
m trauma\, the recognition of reorientation and survival. I asked myself:
How do you cultivate a sense of belonging and re-association with nature
in the face of natural disaster and death? How do you go back to what is
primordial\, the elements and forces that create and destroy everything
in the Cosmos? How do you move past your physical body and accept yoursel
f as a being in transition? I believe all is not destroyed by nature but
continually enveloped and recreated by it.\n\nThe exhibition consists of
large-scale archival pigment prints and an experimental film. The work de
picts the Five Platonic Solids in their elemental form: Water\, Earth\, A
ir\, Fire and Ether. Still images and video were purposefully composed an
d manually shot in camera utilizing only water\, plants\, sand and light.
No filters were applied to the still images in post-production.\n\nOur c
onnective tissue is the glue that holds our bodies together much like the
Cosmic Web is the scaffolding of the Cosmos. Seeing the relationship bet
ween our bodies and the Cosmos has been a healing force in my life.

DESCRIPTION:Following the ecological and infrastructural turn in media stu
dies\, this dissertation project investigates cultural responses to and r
epresentations of planetary ecological issues. By bringing together 'medi
a events\,' eco-art and media activism in or about the Amazon Forest\, it
embraces a cross-media approach to examine the ecological footprint of m
edia linked to the Amazon within the contemporary context marked by commu
nications revolution\, climate change activism and impending ecological c
atastrophe.\n\nThe project also shows the important place Amazonian ecome
dia has in affecting dominant techniques of environmental communication -
namely framing\, flows and mediation - even as media's material producti
on and processes might remain complicit to extractivism and environmental
degradation.\n\nIn foregrounding emerging media and communicative practi
ces mainly by Amazonian indigenous actors and organizations that at once
promote a transformative engagement with tropical geographic spaces as we
ll as with media's extractivist effects\, the project ultimately helps to

DESCRIPTION:Mary Berridge's award-winning series of photographs is paired
with narratives written primarily by the subjects or their parents. The e
xhibition\, "Visible Spectrum\," offers an intimate view of life with aut
ism\, as told from within an autism community\, which includes Berridge a
nd her son. It encourages an alternate way of seeing the condition\, in w
hich the diverse and unconventional perspectives of the autistic are valu
ed. It also explores the ways the autistic and their families navigate a
world which is not made for them and in which they are not always welcome
. Despite this\, the stories may surprise readers with their thought¬-pro
voking and affirmative viewpoints on autism and being different. The form
ally composed and quietly luminous portraits allude to the rich inner liv
es of their subjects. \n\n"Visible Spectrum" is curated by students in DO
CST 333S/733S "Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions" and will be
on display 11/14/2024 - 2/28/2025. \n\nThe Center for Documentary Studie

DESCRIPTION:Works by Albanian Photographer Zeni Alia - including a photogr
aphy series\, "Waiting for a Train\," and an installation\, "Good Luck!"
 - are on display at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies through March 3
1\, 2025. \n\nThe exhibit was curated by students while they were taking
Duke's "Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions" course in Fall 202
5.\n\n"Waiting for a Train" captures Albania's gradual shift away from it
s reliance on the country's oldest and only remaining train. "Good Luck!"
contends with the legacy of political and economic isolation in Albania
and the current trends in migration\n\nThe Center for Documentary Studies
is open 9:00am-5:00pm\, Monday-Friday\, except on holidays.

DESCRIPTION:Gallery talk with artist Mary Berridge at 6:00 pm.\n\nMary Ber
ridge's award-winning series of photographs is paired with narratives w
ritten primarily by the subjects or their parents. The exhibition\, "Vis
ible Spectrum\," offers an intimate view of life with autism\, as told fr
om within an autism community\, which includes Berridge and her son. It e
ncourages an alternate way of seeing the condition\, in which the divers
e and unconventional perspectives of the autistic are valued. It also exp
lores the ways the autistic and their families navigate a world which is
not made for them and in which they are not always welcome. Despite this
\, the stories may surprise readers with their thought-provoking and aff
irmative viewpoints on autism and being different. The formally composed
and quietly luminous portraits allude to the rich inner lives of their su
bjects.\n\n"Visible Spectrum" is curated by students in DOCST 333S/733S "
 Photo Fever: Curating Photography Exhibitions."

DESCRIPTION:Rob Amberg will read and show work from "Little Worlds\," the
third volume in his trilogy of books from Madison County\, North Carolina
. This hybrid book intertwines Amberg's journal entries and photographs f
rom his 50 years in the county with speculative fiction set 50 years into
the future. Amberg will also show recent photographic work from Madison
County in the aftermath of hurricane Helene and subsequent flooding and r
ecovery efforts.\n\nRob Amberg is an award-winning photographer and write
r whose work has been exhibited and published internationally. He has rec
eived fellowships and awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foun
dation\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the Center for Docum
entary Studies\, and others\, and his work is in numerous private and pub
lic collections. \n\n"Little Worlds" completes a trilogy of books from Ma
dison County\, North Carolina. He lives with his wife\, Leslie Stilwell\,
and their daughter\, Kate\, on a small farm in Western North Carolina. T
he first two books of the trilogy - "Sodom Laurel Album" and "The New Roa
d" - document through photographs\, oral history and narrative writing a
traditional agrarian lifestyle and community and its evolution brought on
by the construction of a new superhighway\, improved access to the outsi
de world\, and a changing demographic. "Little Worlds" began as a bedtime
story Amberg was telling his children and has grown to continue this sto
ry of change in Madison County. In many ways it is a traditional document
ary photography book that utilize photographs and journal entries to tell
a factual story about aspects of life in the county over the last fifty
years. But the inclusion of speculative fiction\, an imaginative look to
a dystopian universe fifty years in the future through eyes from the past
that brings the book its innovative energy.\n\n"A compelling experimenta
l documentary work that deftly crosses lines of traditional photographic
expression\, 'Little Worlds' is richly imbued with intersections of Amber
g's three eloquent narratives-photographs\, journal writings\, and the im
aginative stories of returning to a place drastically changed. 'Little Wo
rlds\,' like Amberg's other work\, reveals the cultural fabric of the sou
thern Appalachians through his singular artful and poetic voice." -Tom Ra
nkin\, Professor of the Practice of Art\, Art History & Visual Studies\,
and Director\, MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts\, Duke University

DESCRIPTION:Ziwen Liu (1999\, China) is a multimedia artist working as a f
ilmmaker\, photographer\, and installation artist. She is currently engag
ed in the research and creation of digital art and generative media. Ziwe
n's work consistently revolves around the theme of "relationships."\n\nIn
the context of traditional media\, she has used documentary and narrativ
e films to explore and express familial relationships and bonds. Through
photography and experimental films\, she visually connects the human body
and the plant body\, experimenting with the relationship between humanit
y and nature.\n\nIn digital art\, Ziwen creates generative systems for in
teractive video playback using software. By embracing randomness and diso
rder\, she seeks to discard and replace the presence of the "self" as the
author. This approach challenges the artist's logic\, uncovering the aes
thetic of unordered relationships between fragments and images.\n\nMarch

DESCRIPTION:Throughout my life\, I have been immersed in the western commu
nity\, from horseback riding to listening to stories of my great-grandfat
her breaking horses at Arrow S Ranch. I was in awe of the lifestyle. I us
e photography to document ranch life and rodeo\, showcasing the anticipat
ion before\, intensity during\, and celebration after each event that con
sumes the community.\n\nWestern Semiotics is a photo series that explores
the culture\, paying particular attention to details that often go unnot
iced within the roughness of this lifestyle. The photographs highlight ab
