\, librarians and community organizers to reanimate conversations around
what it means to be American.\n\nMore About the Artist:\nJennifer 張 Crand

DESCRIPTION:This symposium contends with the relationship between feminist
theory\, feminist activism\, and the culture wars. Often taking the form
of moral panic\, culture wars are characterized by reactionary rhetoric
that targets the most marginalized groups\, casting them as threats to th
e social order. More than metaphor\, culture "wars" are proxies for polit
ical hegemony\, eliciting questions about state power\, criminalization\,
social movements\, and the attack on academic freedom. Through lectures
and a film screening\, leading feminist scholars grapple both with femini
sm's real and/or perceived role in sparking moral panic\, and with its mo
ral imperative to resist and contextualize that panic.\n\nPlease RSVP via
the "More information" button on the right of this screen.

DESCRIPTION:JUNKYARD TORNADO\nBy Claire Rosemary Lewis ('26)\nLive Reading
March 26 at 6:00PM\nCenter for Documentary Studies Auditorium\n\nThe nov
el Junkyard Tornado follows twelve college students as they navigate grie
ving the death of their friend while their city is preoccupied with creat
ionism discourse and rumors of a sea monster lurking in the river. Set in
2005 and against the backdrop of Topeka\, Kansas\, a state capital famou
s for being a hotbed of religion-fueled protests\, the birthplace of Pent
ecostalism\, and home of the man who coined "What Would Jesus Do?"\, Junk
yard Tornado is about artistic and cosmological chaos\, creation\, and ev
olution and begs the question of what it means to create despite or perha
ps because of a tragic situation.\n\nI am a writer and artist whose pract
ice spans fiction\, creative nonfiction\, animation\, and performance art
. My work explores change and transformation in 21st century American cul
ture and the uncertainty that comes from pivotal life experiences. I am i
nterested in ambiguity\, cultural shifts\, and tension between the physic
al and digital landscapes in contemporary culture. Pulling from my underg
raduate training in animation and experience working in theatre\, I am dr
awn to movement and intricacy in creative pursuits. Lately I've also been
exploring "unplugged" ways of creating\, writing much of my novel longha
nd and on a typewriter and embarking on hands-on creative projects. Junky
ard Tornado is a project that came out of my need to explore the signific
ance of space and chaos in relation to both my childhood experiences and
 present circumstances.

DESCRIPTION:"Til Íslands" presents images of dislocation and reconnection
with the Icelandic landscape after over a century of separation. In the s
ummer of 2025\, Emma Geiger returned to the land left behind by her great
-great-grandmother in 1888\, documenting the delicate experience of becom
ing reacquainted with a landscape and people in the midst of dramatic env
ironmental change. "Til Íslands" features work created at her family's fa
rm on Lake Apavatn\, and at the Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd\; sti
 ll and moving images\, phytograms of plants\, seaweed\, and wool\, and a
quilt naturally dyed with lupine\, rhubarb\, and lichen each reflect impr
essions of the Icelandic landscape and identity. \n\nAbout the artist: \n
 \nEmma Geiger (MFA|EDA '22) is an artist\, photographer\, and songwriter
from Hopkinton\, New Hampshire\, working with natural materials and analo
g processes. She holds an MFA in Experimental and Documentary Art from Du
ke University\, and a graduate certificate in Visual Storytelling from th
e Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. In 2025\, she was awarded the C
assilhaus Travel Fellowship for her documentary project exploring her anc
estral connection to Iceland. Geiger writes and performs music and has re
leased two EPs - Haven (2022) and Reverse Bloom (2024). Across her visual

DESCRIPTION:Experience pieces of a live documentary blending music\, film\
, and food\, followed by a conversation with its creators.\n\n**Free! and
open to all\, but please register at https://rsvp.duke.edu/M1n0zw.**\n\n
When our most sacred recipes tell inconvenient truths\, do we have the co
urage to listen? For Justin Robinson (Carolina Chocolate Drops)\, a famil
y treat called "stickies" turns out to be stückene\, the German word for
scraps. A lifetime of digestive trouble fades after a week of eating West
African food. A DNA test reveals a German ancestor in a Black Southern f
 amily tree. \n\nRobinson\, a Grammy-winning musician and ethnobotanist\,
has spent years pulling at these threads\, following them from his grandp
arents' kitchen in South Carolina to Nigeria\, to Germany\, and into deep
 er questions about identity\, ancestry\, and the body.\n\n"German Soul\,"
executive produced by Rhiannon Giddens\, is a "live documentary" that pu
ts Robinson on stage with film\, original music\, and "taste cues" prepar
ed by Chef Adé Carrena. The project is being workshopped with the communi
ties closest to its findings\, to stay in active relationship with the cu
lture it examines.\n\nFollowing the live documentary portion\, Robinson w
ill join co-director/producer D.L. Anderson (Vittles Films) for a convers
ation about how they arrived at this format and what it takes to build it
. They'll cover the design of a documentary meant to turn over big\, pers
onal questions in a live room\, the ethics of workshopping hard history w
ith implicated audiences\, and whether this format can chart a sustainabl
e path for independent nonfiction.\n\nFree and open to the public. Presen
ted by Duke CDS Continuing Education. \n\nLearn more about the project: h

DESCRIPTION:Can an oil change be filmed as a fluid master?\n\nJoin artist
Kenya (Robinson) for a free public event exploring the surprising connect
ions between documentary filmmaking and auto mechanics through a live\, e
mbodied performance.\n\nIn filmmaking\, a "fluid master" is an entire sce
ne captured in one continuous shot while the camera remains in motion. Fo
r this event\, Kenya will perform two live oil changes as continuous flui
d master shots\, inviting participants to consider how routine automotive
maintenance can be transformed through the language of filmmaking. As sh
e works\, Kenya will engage attendees in a conversation about her life an
 d practice as a Black woman\, fine artist\, and mechanic.\n\nCome view th
e action from multiple camera angles\, including a live GoPro feed\, whil
e taking part in an artist talk that explores labor\, performance\, obser
vation\, and the stories embedded in everyday systems.\n\nThe event will
take place in the Center for Documentary Studies parking lot and includes
refreshments and beverages. Space is limited to 25 - 30 people\, so plea
se register to reserve your spot here: https://rsvp.duke.edu/event/f23fe0
fa-ab31-482e-895f-d11d694f0b89/summary\n\nThe promotional image is from T
URBO TAROT\, Kenya's new artist-directed project that uses generative AI
as one component of an iterative visualization and production process. Ke
nya developed the project's conceptual framework\, automotive-to-tarot co
 rrespondences\, visual system\, imagery\, and individual card concepts\,
using AI tools as one component of the artistic process.\n\nInterested in
exploring the ideas behind TURBO TAROT? Join Kenya for a second free pub
lic event on October 3 at 10 am at CDS\, where she will explore automotiv
e systems through the symbolic framework of the tarot\, blending automoti
ve knowledge\, philosophy\, and live tarot readings.
