DESCRIPTION:Four lives intersect along the Ganges: a low caste boy in hope
less love\, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in
 a tragedy\, a hapless father with fading morality\, and a spirited child
yearning for a family\, long to escape the moral constructs of a small-to
wn. A series of unprecedented events find these lives\, to reflect and ex
plore their desires through each other.

DESCRIPTION:Book talk by Curtis Chin\, co-founder of the Asian American Wr
iters Workshop.\n\nThe author will discuss his experiences growing up que
er and Asian in the Midwest. First event in a mini-series on "Diasporic C
hinese Foodways."\nAbout the book:\n\nNineteen eighties Detroit was a vol
atile place to live\, but above the fray stood a safe haven: Chung's Cant
onese Cuisine\, where anyone-from the city's first Black mayor to the loc
al drag queens\, from a big-time Hollywood star to elderly Jewish couples
-could sit down for a warm\, home-cooked meal. Here was where\, beneath a
bright-red awning and surrounded by his multigenerational family\, filmm
aker and activist Curtis Chin came of age\; where he learned to embrace h
is identity as a gay ABC\, or American-born Chinese\; where he navigated
the divided city's spiraling misfortunes\; and where-between helpings of
almond boneless chicken\, sweet-and-sour pork\, and some of his own\, les
s-savory culinary concoctions-he realized just how much he had to offer t
o the world\, to his beloved family\, and to himself.\n\nServed up by the
cofounder of the Asian American Writers' Workshop and structured around
the very menu that graced the tables of Chung's\, Everything I Learned\,
I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant is both a memoir and an invitation: to
step inside one boy's childhood oasis\, scoot into a vinyl booth\, and gr
ow up with him-and perhaps even share something off the secret menu.\n\n
    "Vivid\, moving\, funny\, and heartfelt\, Curtis Chin's memoir showcas
es his talents as an activist and a storyteller. This is one man's story
of growing up gay\, Chinese American\, and working class in 1980s Detroit
\, finding a place in a large and loving immigrant family and in a changi
ng city-and in doing so\, carving out a place in the world for himself."\

ate working group\, and the Taiwan Studies Workshop

DESCRIPTION:How do we model thinking\, and in what sense does our thought
have objects? I review two models of thinking from the medieval Scholasti
c tradition\, which I call the "gaze + sign" model (in Augustine and Abel
ard) and the "acquiring conscious being" model (in Albert and Aquinas). T
hese two models offer interestingly different ways of conceptualizing bot
h thinking and the object of thought. Toward the end of the thirteenth ce
ntury\, however\, one begins to collapse into the other\, with important
implications for later conceptions of medieval theories of thinking\, e.g
 .\, in Brentano.

DESCRIPTION:In a classical moral theory like that of Thomas Aquinas (1225-
1274)\, which centers on the moral status of discrete actions performed b
y individual persons\, it can seem hard to find room for the notion of st
ructural injustice. Although Aquinas himself does not raise questions abo
ut structural injustices\, I argue that certain principles he lays down i
n his theory of justice provide resources \nto develop a "Thomistic" appr
oach to structural racism\, one that is capable of distinguishing cases o
f genuine structural racism from innocent disparities\, and that also exp
lains why one can be morally obligated to remediate an unjust social stru
cture even if one has not personally taken part in its creation.
