DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Duke University English Department\, D
 uke Initiatives in Theology and the Arts hosts poet Shane McCrae for a vi
 sit on October 20\, 2022. DITA presents a lunchtime lecture in the Alumni
  Memorial Common Room at 12:30 PM. \n\n\nMcCrae is the author of eight bo
 oks of poetry\, most recently "Cain Named the Animal\," and the recipient
  of numerous awards\, such as a Whiting Writers' Award\, a NYSCA/NYFA Fel
 lowship\, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. McCrae's poet
 ry deals with race\, religion\, and American identity. His story is parti
 cularly challenging and impacts his art and faith deeply. Born to a White
  mother and a Black father\, McCrae was raised by his grandparents\, who 
 were White supremacists that denied he was Black.\n\nMcCrae's lecture wil
 l address theology\, art\, and personhood. Lunch is provided for the firs
 t forty guests\, and no admission is necessary.

 n for a lecture entitled "Christ and Empire." \n\nPaula Fredriksen\, a fe
 llow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, is Aurelio Professor 
 of Scripture emerita at Boston University and Distinguished Visiting Prof
 essor emerita in the Department of Comparative Religions at the Hebrew Un
 iversity of Jerusalem\, which awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2018. 
 Educated at Wellesley College\, Oxford University and Princeton Universit
 y\, she has published widely on the social and intellectual history of an
 cient Christianity\, and on pagan-Jewish-Christian relations in the Roman
  Empire. Author of Augustine on Romans (1982) and From Jesus to Christ  (
 1988\; 2000)\, her Jesus of Nazareth\, King of the Jews won the 1999 Nati
 onal Jewish Book Award. More recently\, she has explored the development 
 of Christian anti-Judaism\, and Augustine'singular response to it\, in Au
 gustine and the Jews  (2010)\, and has investigated the shifting concepti
 ons of God and of humanity in SIN: The Early History of an Idea (2012). P
 aul: The Pagans' Apostle (2017)\, won the 2018 Prose Award from the Ameri
 can Publishers' Association. Her most recent study\, When Christians Were
  Jews (2018)\, places the Jesus movement's Jewish messianic message withi
 n the wider world of ancient Mediterranean culture\, politics\, and power
 .

DESCRIPTION:The Elizabeth A. Clark Center for Late Ancient Studies (EAC-CL
 AS) is pleased to welcome Dr. Asa Eger (UNCG) to give a lecture entitled 
 "The Fortress of the Figs: Cross-Cultural Materialities and Identities on
  the Byzantine-Islamic Frontier\," focusing on his excavations at an 8-12
 th century Early Islamic/Middle Byzantine frontier fort called Tupras Fie
 ld\, or Hisn al-Tinat.   Professor Eger is a 2025-26 Fellow at the Nation
 al Humanities Center and professor of the Islamic world in the Department
  of History and the Program in Archaeology at the University of North Car
 olina at Greensboro (UNCG). He received his PhD in 2008 from the Universi
 ty of Chicago in Islamic Archaeology with a specialization in the early I
 slamic period. Dr. Eger has been teaching at UNCG since 2009. In 2011-12\
 , he was a fellow in Hellenic Studies at Princeton University and a fello
 w at Dumbarton Oaks in Byzantine Studies. From 2016-17\, he was a fellow 
 of the American Council of Learned Societies. Since 1996 he has been cond
 ucting surveys and excavations in Anatolia and Syria-Palestine (the Levan
 t) from the Byzantine period through the Late Islamic period. He focuses 
 on frontiers\, landscape archaeology\, and environmental history\, as wel
 l as urbanism and the relationship between cities and their hinterlands. 
 He also specializes in ceramic material culture. He has conducted surveys
  and excavations in Turkey\, Greece\, and Cyprus and currently is co-dire
 ctor of the Caesarea Coastal Archaeological Project in Israel since 2022.

DESCRIPTION:The past decades have witnessed remarkable advances in the his
 torical and conceptual understanding of empire\, imperialism\, and coloni
 alism. Focusing\, chronologically\, on the seventeenth and eighteenth cen
 turies\, and geographically\, on all the imperial configurations that are
  relevant to Jewish thought during this period\, this workshop takes as i
 ts point of departure the fact that empire - as a reality or a phantasy -
  was a ubiquitous frame of reference that has been obscured or neglected 
 in the scholarship on this genesis period of modern Jewish thought.\n\nTh
 e workshop calls scholars to revisit a series of key Jewish intellectual 
 figures\, movements\, and developments in their relationship to early mod
 ern empires and colonial expansion. It aims to shed original light on fam
 iliar and less-familiar topics and rethink some of the basic theoretical 
 assumptions and priorities of the existing scholarship and stake out new 
 directions for future scholarship.\n\nThis workshop is cohosted by the Du
 ke Center for Jewish Studies\, Trinity College of Arts and Sciences\, the
  Bucerius Institute\, North Carolina State University\, Asian and Middle 
 Eastern Studies at Duke\, Duke Department of History\, and the Carolina C
