 ed by Makoto Fujimura\, a leading contemporary artist. Makoto's process d
 riven\, refractive "slow art" has been described by David Brooks of New Y
 ork Times as "a small rebellion against the quickening of time."\n\nRober
 t Kushner\, in the mid 90's\, wrote about Fujimura's art in Art in Americ
 a this way: "The idea of forging a new kind of art\, about hope\, healing
 \, redemption\, refuge\, while maintaining visual sophistication and inte
 llectual integrity is a growing movement\, one which finds Makoto Fujimur
 a's work at the vanguard." Fujimura's art has been featured widely in gal
 leries and museums around the world.\n\nIn 2014\, the American Academy of
  Religion named Fujimura as it's 2014 "Religion and the Arts" award recip
 ient. This award is presented annually to professional artists who have m
 ade significant contributions to the relationship of art and religion\, b
 oth for the academy and a broader public. Fujimura currently divides his 
 time between Princeton\, New Jersey\, studio and Pasadena\, California\, 
 studio and serves as the Director of Culture Care Initiative at Fuller Th
 eological Seminary.\n\nThis lecture is part of the Psalms in Dialogue ser
 ies\, a multi-year collaborative project engaging artists\, performers\, 
 and theologians in a creative dialogue on the power of the Psalms to comf
 ort and inspire communities of faith.

  the Divinity School's Westbrook Building. ***\n\nIn medieval Christian m
 onasticism\, the Old Testament was described as "The Book of Desire" and 
 selections were included in daily prayers and the annual cycle of reading
 s within the church calendar. The Psalms were of particular importance\; 
 read and recited at every service\, they traced for Christians the narrat
 ive arc from longing for God to fulfillment in Christ\, from lament to ad
 oration.\n\nThis event engages the Psalter through the performing and vis
 ual arts. Performers include Ekklesia Contemporary Ballet\, Andrew Nemr\,
  Duke Chapel Evensong Singers\, and Christopher Jacobson. In addition to 
 traditional sacred music by Herbert Howells\, Caroline Shaw\, and others\
 , the evening includes new dance works choreographed for this event and a
 rtworks by Makoto Fujimura. \n\nStay after the performance to have a conv
 ersation with the artists.\n\nThis performance is part of the Psalms in D
 ialogue series\, a multi-year collaborative project engaging artists\, pe
 rformers\, and theologians in a creative dialogue on the power of the Psa
