DESCRIPTION:The first concert of the Ciompi Quartet Presents 2023 Summer C
 hamber Music Series features Jonathan Bagg (viola) with guest artists Ben
 jamin Fingland (clarinet)\, Maiani da Silva (violin)\, Emely Phelps (pian
 o) and Laura Gilbert (flute). The title for his presentation is drawn fro
 m a Bartók work that was written for Benny Goodman in 1938. The program f
 eatures a unique musical combination with unusual instrumentation. \n\nPr
 ogram: \nBéla Bartók: Contrasts\; George Crumb: Eleven Echoes of Autumn (
 1966)\; Undine Smith Moore: Afro-American Suite (1969). \n\nAs violist wi
 th Duke's Ciompi String Quartet\, Jonathan Bagg has performed hundreds of
  concerts in the U.S. and around the world\, and is co-Founder/Artistic D
 irector of Electric Earth Concerts. Clarinetist Benjamin Fingland is a fo
 under of the critically acclaimed new music collective counter)induction 
 and a member of the renowned Dorian Wind Quintet. Maiani da Silva is a me
 mber of the four-time Grammy-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird\, co-founder
  of performance-art duo The Furies\, as well as Lecturer at Yale's Depart
 ment of Music and Visiting Distinguished Professor at University of Orego
 n. Pianist Emely Phelps enjoys a multilayered career as a soloist\, chamb
 er musician\, and teacher. A finalist for the 2019 Pro Musicis Internatio
 nal Award\, Emely has given nearly 40 performances over the past two year
 s. Laura Gilbert has appeared worldwide as flutist and lecturer. She is c

 nces of recently composed piano quintets inspired by visionary creatives 
 and finishes with Handel's well-known Passacaglia and Pärt's beloved Spie

 llen Shipman\, the visionary landscape architect of the Duke Gardens\; Bi
 ll Robinson: Cubic Deviations\, inspired by Brahms' Variations on a Theme

 rvo Pärt: Spiegel im Spiegel. \n\nEric Pritchard has served as first viol
 inist of the Ciompi Quartet of Duke University since 1995. He tours world
 wide as a chamber musician\, appearing as soloist with orchestras includi
 ng the Boston Pops\, Indianapolis Philharmonic and Orchestra New England.
  Anton Miller is Professor of Violin at the Hartt School of Music and Co-
 Director of Music at the Point CounterPoint Chamber Festival in Vermont. 
 Seattle-based violist and composer Heather Bentley has trailblazed a care
 er as one of the West Coast's most visible improvisatory musicians\, spec
 ializing in creating evocative atmospheres and textures. Cellist Elizabet
 h Anderson has performed in major concert venues in China\, Japan\, Austr
 alia\, Italy\, Germany\, Finland\, Mexico and the US. She is a founding m
 ember of the Naumburg Award winning Meliora Quartet. Pianist Brandt Fredr
 iksen enjoys a dynamic and versatile career as a performer\, musical dire
 ctor and teacher. His debut recitals were held in Weill Recital Hall at C
 arnegie Hall in New York City\, Gasteig Cultural Center in Munich\, Germa
 ny\, and Vafopoulio Cultural Center in Thessaloniki\, Greece. \n\nSubscri

 Program: \nBoccherini: Cello Quintet"Night Music of the Streets of Madrid
 "\; John Harbison: Presences\, for solo cello\, string quartet\, and bass
 \, commissioned to honor the young cellist\, David Anderson (1978-1998)\;
  Brahms: Sextet for Strings in G Major op. 36\, the early joyful flowerin
 g of Brahms' musical voice.\n\nCaroline Stinson is cellist with the Ciomp
 i String Quartet at Duke where she is Associate Professor of the Practice
  and Director of the Chamber Music Program. The Lydian String Quartet (An
 drea Segar and Julia Glenn\, violins\; Mark Berger\, viola\; Joshua Gordo
 n\, cello) has been acclaimed by audiences and critics across the USA and
  abroad for embracing the full range of the string quartet repertory with
  curiosity\, virtuosity\, and dedication to the highest artistic ideals o
 f music making. The Lydians have long championed the commissioning\, perf
 orming and recording of new works\, and all members of the group are on t
 he faculty of Brandeis University. Bassist Rachel Calin has been called "
 a lyrical soloist in command of her instrument\," by the New York Times. 
 She has appeared in concert throughout Asia\, Europe\, the Middle East an
 d the United States\, and can be heard on NPR's "Performance Today." Adri
 ana Linares is the founding violist of the award winning Dalí Quartet\, w
 ith whom she has embarked on recording\, performing and educational proje
 cts in the US and abroad. She currently serves on the faculty at West Che
 ster University of PA\, as part of the Dalí Quartet residency. \n\nSubscr

 ry\, artists and composers have sought to lift the veil of the subconscio
 us by giving voice to the dreamworld in their work. This concert begins w
 ith luminous sounds and evocative stories from six contemporary composers
  and concludes with a transcription of Arnold Schoenberg's glorious setti
 ng of Transfigured Night.\n\nThe summer of 2024 will be a summer of chamb
 er music not to be forgotten when Ciompi Presents once again\, fills the 
 chamber musical niche with vibrant artistry. This three-concert series ne
 ver fails to delight audiences when the musicians share with the audience
  the inspirational creativity of master composers. Nationally and interna
 tionally recognized guest artists will join Ciompi musicians - violist Jo
 nathan Bagg\, violinist Eric Pritchard and cellist Caroline Stinson - in 
 these celebratory presentations filled with creativity\, conviviality and
