DESCRIPTION:This evening we celebrate the feast of the Presentation of our
  Lord in the Temple at Jerusalem-also called Candlemas\, or The Purificat
 ion of the Virgin Mary.\n\nWhen Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus 
 to the Temple according to Jewish law\, he was recognized by the old prop
 het Simeon\, who knew that this child was "a light for revelation to all 
 nations."\n\nThus the image of light carries an important part in today's
  liturgy\, and by ancient tradition the service begins with the Blessing 
 of Candles (whence the name Candlemas)\, and a procession "to meet the Lo
 rd\," just as Simeon and Anna went to the Temple and found the Christ the
 re.\n\nThe service begins in the Narthex with the Blessing of Candles\, a
 nd a Procession into Duke Chapel. All are welcome. \n\nPaid parking is av
 ailable on a first-come-first-served basis in the Bryan Center Garage at

DESCRIPTION:Evening Prayer (or "Evensong") has its roots in the ancient pa
 ttern of daily monastic services\, and was established by Thomas Cranmer 
 in the first English Book of Common Prayer in 1549. Duke Evensong Singers
  have performed Choral Evensong (where most of the service is sung by the
  choir) in Duke Chapel since 2015.\n\nThis semester\, Duke's Evensong ser
 vices will present an historical narrative of both the liturgy and its mu
 sic. These services are not intended as historical reconstructions of any
  particular event\; the intention is to present a range of music that is 
 contemporaneous with the period\, the tastes\, and the religious climate 
 of the time.\n\nEvensongs this semester will feature an introductory talk
  beginning at 3:30pm in Duke Chapel outlining the main changes in content
  and context that listeners will hear reflected in the service music.

 rvice of Choral Evensong with a pre-service talk beginning at 3:30 p.m.\n
 \nThe Duke Chapel Evensong Singers\, directed by the Chapel's Dr. Philip 
 Cave\, present a concert of three masterful contemporary compositions for
  choir and organ with themes of sacrifice and offering. \n\nAdmission is 
 free. Parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis in the Brya
 n Center garage at 125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in the Bry
 an Center Surface Lot at the same address.\n\nGerald Finzi's anthem Lo\, 
 the full\, final sacrifice is one of the finest works in the English chor
 al tradition\, from the pen of a twentieth-century British composer whose
  sensitivity to poetry is legend. For this piece\, Finzi sets to music tw
 o seventeenth-century poems by Richard Crashaw that celebrate the gift of
  the Eucharist.\n\nThe Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's Salve Regina was com
 posed in 2001 and\, as in many of his sacred choral works\, he achieves g
 reat effect from quite minimal gestures. The music in this setting of the
  traditional Latin hymn to the Virgin Mary develops from a unison choral 
 song into 8-voice polyphony. The rhythm of the Marian text has a direct i
 nfluence on the sober 3/4 meter of the composition. \n\nThe twentieth-cen
 tury composer and pianist Kenneth Leighton's cantata Crucifixus pro nobis
  sets to music words by the seventeenth-century poets Patrick Carey and P
 hineas Fletcher. Composed for tenor solo\, seven-part choir\, and organ\,
  it dates from 1961 and includes some severe and dissonant writing-ending
  with a sublime setting of Fletcher's poem "Drop\, drop slow tears." Teno
 r soloist Anighya Crocker performs with the choir.

DESCRIPTION:Evening Prayer (or "Evensong") has its roots in the ancient pa
 ttern of daily monastic services\, and was established by Thomas Cranmer 
 in the first English Book of Common Prayer in 1549. Duke Evensong Singers
  have performed Choral Evensong (where most of the service is sung by the
  choir) in Duke Chapel since 2015.\n\nThis semester\, Duke's Evensong ser
 vices will present an historical narrative of both the liturgy and its mu
 sic. These services are not intended as historical reconstructions of any

 e Gomes Guest Preacher for this Sunday will be the Rev. Dr. Willie James 
 Jennings\, associate professor of systematic theology and Africana studie
 s at Yale University Divinity School. A graduate of Duke University\, Dr.
  Jennings is a systematic theologian teaches in the areas of theology\, b
 lack church and Africana studies\, as well as post-colonial and race theo
 ry. The author of a number of books\, he wrote The Christian Imagination:
  Theology and the Origins of Race\, which has become a standard text read
  in colleges\, seminaries\, and universities. He is the recipient of the 
 2015 Grawemeyer Award in Religion for his groundbreaking work on race and
  Christianity. His recently authored commentary on the Book of Acts won t
 he Reference Book of the Year Award from The Academy of Parish Clergy. He
  is also the author of After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging\, which
  won the 2020 book of the year award from Publisher's Weekly and was sele
 cted as a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book of the 
 Year in the Constructive-Reflective Studies category. In addition to bein
 g a frequent lecturer at colleges\, universities\, and seminaries\, Dr. J
 ennings is also a regular workshop leader at pastor conferences.\n\nParki

 ins features the Brombaugh and Flentrop organs in works by early Portugue
 se composers\, Frescobaldi\, Bach\, Mozart\, Brahms\, Heiller\, and Bovet
 .\n\nA professor of the practice of music at Duke\, Dr. Parkins's solo re
 cordings have appeared on the Calcante\, Gothic\, Loft\, Musical Heritage
  Society\, and Naxos labels. "Salome's Dance\," his most recent release\,
  elicited the following remark from one critic (in The American Organist)
 : "His playing is elegant\, with a freely flowing musicality that goes fa
 r beyond mere technical mastery."\n\nAdmission is free. Paid parking is a
 vailable on a first-come-first-served basis in the Bryan Center Garage at
  125 Science Drive. ADA parking is available in surface lot at the same a

 h 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 
 The labyrinth\, a forty-foot circle containing a winding path\, is an anc
 ient spiritual tradition in many faiths. The labyrinth is self-guided and
  takes thirty minutes to an hour to complete. All are welcome to particip
 ate.\n\nDuring the evening of Monday\, March 27\, two of the Chapel's cho
 irs will be rehearsing so their music will accompany those who are walkin
 g the labyrinth during that time. On Tuesday the 28th\, from 1-1:30\, the
  Labyrinth Walk will be accompanied by music from our Chapel Interim Orga
 nist\, Chad Fothergill\, and Chapel Organ Intern\, Daniel Jacky. At other
  times the walk will be in silence.
