DESCRIPTION:Join the Kenan Institute for Ethics and host Adriane Lentz-Smi
th for a conversation with University of Chicago professor and Crime Lab
director Jens Ludwig on the causes of gun violence - and the policy chang
es that can help us prevent it.\n\nJens Ludwig uses behavioral economics
and data science to understand why people commit crimes. In his most rece
nt book\, "Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Vio
lence\," Ludwig writes that gun violence isn't just a burden our society
must bear - it's a problem that we can actually solve. \n\nWith insights
informed by decades of research and fieldwork in the South Side of Chicag
o\, Ludwig discovers that most shootings happen in the heat of the moment
\, driven more by circumstances than by calculation. He argues that findi
ng ways to intervene in the "unforgiving places" that spur gun violence c
ould effectively stop crimes before they happen\, giving both potential v
ictims and potential perpetrators another chance at life.\n\nJens Ludwig
is a behavioral economist and Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished
Service Professor at the University of Chicago. His current work focuses
on how behavioral science and data science can help solve social problem
s\, particularly in the areas of urban poverty\, crime\, and education. H
e helped found the Crime Lab and the Education Lab at the University of C
hicago to work closely with government agencies to turn these insights in
to social change out in the real world. The lab projects include working
with the Chicago Police Department to implement data-driven management ch
anges that helped substantially reduce gun violence without increasing ar
rests.\n\nThis event takes place at the Durham County Main Library. A rec
eption and book signing will follow the event. Copies of "Unforgiving Pla
ces" will be available for purchase\, courtesy of the Regulator Bookshop.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with The Declaration of Independence Display we
invite you to join us for a special event!\n \nFamously\, in December 17
73\, over a hundred colonists snuck onto ships in Boston Harbor after nig
htfall\, destroying chests of tea worth nearly $2 million today. Often p
ortrayed as a local tax protest that helped spark a Revolution\, this eve
nt raises all kinds of questions: How did others elsewhere in America and
across the world see such an affair? Why were the protesters dressed as
Native Americans? Where did all that tea come from in the first place? \
n \nThe "Boston Tea Party" was just one example of the many ways in which
the American Revolution was a global phenomenon\, whose causes and conse
quences reached from India and China to Indigenous nations across the Nor
th American continent. Join us as Duke historians Adriane Lentz-Smith and
Philip Stern launch a year of discussions on these many different "World
s of 1776\," in conversation with UNC historian Kathleen DuVal\, Pulitzer
Prize winning author of Native Nations: A Millennium in North America. \
n \nBrought to you by Durham County Public Library\, Duke We the People:
A Duke & Durham Initiative\; The John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute\
; and the Duke University Department of History's 2026-2027 program on th
 e "Worlds of 1776."

DESCRIPTION:Join the Kenan Institute for Ethics and host Adriane Lentz-Smi
th for a conversation with historian\, author\, and "The Gilded Age" hist
orical consultant and co-executive producer Erica Armstrong Dunbar on tel
ling the stories of our nation's complex past. \n \n\n\nWhat does history
look like through the eyes of those whose stories are rarely told?\n\nTh
rough her historical writing and work on the HBO series "The Gilded Age\,
" Erica Armstrong Dunbar offers us portraits of African Americans in the
nineteenth century\, people as complex and compelling as the times in whi
ch they lived. One is the remarkable Ona Judge\, who escaped from slavery
  - and her former owners\, George and Martha Washington - when she was tw
enty years old. Though she lived the rest of her life as a fugitive\, Jud
ge was "Never Caught" - despite the Washingtons' repeated attempts to ret
urn her to slavery. \n\nOn the 250th anniversary of 1776\, Dunbar invites
us to consider how a fuller narrative of our past enriches the American
story - and our present and future as a nation e pluribus unum\, or "out
of many\, one."\n\nThis event takes place at the Durham County Main Libra
ry. Parking is available onsite. A reception and book signing will take p
lace after the hour-long event\, and copies of Dunbar's books "Never Caug
ht: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave\, Ona Judg
e" and "She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman" will be a
vailable for purchase\, courtesy of Parker & Otis.\n\n"Never Caught" is t
he 2026 Duke Common Experience reading. It is integrated with We The Peop
 le\, a university-wide initiative led by Duke Arts\, which marks the 250t
h anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \n\nAddi
tional sponsors for Dunbar's visit include Duke Libraries\, the Office of
Undergraduate Education's Duke Common Experience Program\, and the Duke
Department of History.\n\nPlease register on the event page on the Durham
County Library website (under "More Event Information."
