A New Work (Duke Alumnus)\n\nThe Portfolio Project\nThe Ciompi Quartet P

engage with composers in Duke Music's graduate program during the COVID-1

DESCRIPTION:The Vega String Quartet\, Quartet-in-Residence at Emory Univer
sity\, is cultivating a new generation of chamber music lovers through dy
namic performances and innovative community engagement. The New York Time
s raved that "[the Quartet's] playing had a kind of clean intoxication to
it\, pulling the listener along...the musicians took real risks in their
music making\," and the L.A. Times praised their "triumphant L.A. debut.
" They concertize both nationally and internationally\, most recently in
 Baltimore\, Chicago\, Nashville\, Sacramento\, Berlin\, San Miguel\, the
Brahms-Saal in Vienna's Musikverein\, and the Kleine Zaal in Amsterdam's

DESCRIPTION:Ensemble Intercolor is a trailblazing young trio whose wholly
original approach to music ensures a vibrant and dynamic program at every
concert. Their singular instrumental combination of cimbalom\, viola\, c
larinet and voice combines with their varied cultural backgrounds - the t
hree musicians are from Belarus\, Colombia and France - to create a peren
nially fresh perspective. They expand their instrumentation with voice\,
percussion and sound experiences using objects. Conceiving of each instru
ment as a human voice\, they create unique\, unforgettable transcriptions
of early vocal music.\n\nIn their program "Inspiratrices\," they pay hom
age to nearly-forgotten female composers of vocal music. New arrangements
bring fresh life to historical works written primarily during the Renais
sance and spanning the 12th through 17th centuries. The program also feat
ures contemporary music inspired by the female figures of the past.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert celebrating the sesquicentennial of Maur
ice Ravel's birth! Violinist Gabriel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Ba
lbi present an inventive program that traces his far-reaching influence o
n chamber music from the early 20th century to today. At its heart is Rav
el's Sonata for Violin and Cello\, a work of radical clarity and contrapu
ntal innovation\, composed in memory of Claude Debussy.\n \nViolinist Gab
riel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Balbi pair Ravel's masterwork with
music by Béla Bartók\, Jean Martinon\, Augusta Read Thomas\, and Alice Ho
ng\, each reflecting a different facet of the evolving modernist and post
modern chamber idiom.\n \nThe program culminates in the world premiere of
Five Duos by Gilbert Amy\, composed expressly for the performers. A lead
ing figure in postwar French music and former director of IRCAM\, Amy is
known for his synthesis of formal rigor and lyrical depth. His new work c
ontinues a tradition shaped by Ravel himself\, offering a contemporary vo
 ice in a century-spanning dialogue.\n \nPresented in collaboration with V
