No tickets are re quired. \n\nThe Recycled Orchestra of Cateura\, directed by Favio Chávez\ , is made up of low-income young people who live in the Bañado Sur commun ity located around the Cateura Landfill in Asunción\, Paraguay. The disti nctive feature of the group is the interpretation of musical works with r ecycled instruments made from garbage rescued from the landfill. \n\nThe Orchestra was the subject of the award-winning documentary\, Landfill Har monic (https://youtu.be/VNej2z--97E?si=7sBN935kBsDEJvtl)\, released in 20 16. \n \nThe orchestra got its start by practicing on instruments made of the trash found in the Cateura Landfill-empty cooking oil cans\, discard ed dinner table legs\, anything that could be\, was refashioned into clas sical instruments. The instruments of the Orchestra imitate violins\, vio las\, cellos\, double basses\, guitars\, flutes\, saxophones\, trumpets a nd percussion instruments. Among their repertoire\, the Orchestra perform s classical music\, folk music\, Paraguayan music\, Latin American music\ , music by the Beatles\, Frank Sinatra\, movie music and symphonic metal\ , among others. \n\nThe Orchestra's mission is to provide musical trainin g to children and adolescents who live in precarious conditions and in a state of vulnerability so that they live experiences that help them learn \, stay in school\, develop their creativity and have access to opportuni ties to improve their future. This performance celebrates th e profound musicality of Marguerite Duras' work in the form of a dialogue between Duras' texts and various musical pieces\, exploring areas of ten sion and affinity. Created by Duke professor Anne-Gaelle Saliot\, this un ique experience occupies a space between theater and chamber music\; Sali ot's and Duras' words alternate with the music that populates Duras' text s and images\, like the soundtracks of her films by Carlos d'Alessio\, of whom she said: "His music surrounds me\, inhabits me like the first minu te I heard it."\n\nThis project premiered at the Philarmonie de Paris in June 2023\, receiving wide acclaim. This program\, featuring two works for violin and piano\, shows his contrasts in spirit \, as the relatively brief and serenely beautiful "Romance in F" stands o pposite the epic "Kreutzer" sonata\, a large\, tense work of great virtuo sity and emotional depth. Paired as a modern foil on this program is Amer ican composer Daniel Temkin. His colorful trio "Maksimal" for violin\, pi ano\, and percussion reflects and illuminates particular elements of Beet hoven's own sensibility\, as short motivic cells\, fiery rhythms\, poigna nt melodies\, and bold textural shifts coalesce to form large-scale archi tectures and sound worlds. For our second event\, we welcome poe ts Stacy Szymaszek and Kimberly Alidio.\n\nStacy Szymaszek is the author of seven books of poetry: Emptied of All Ships (2005)\, Hyperglossia (200 9)\, hart island (2015)\, Journal of Ugly Sites and Other Journals (2016) \, which won the Ottoline Prize from Fence Books and was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award in 2017\, A Year From Today (2018)\, The Pasolini B ook (2022)\, and Famous Hermits (2023). Their most recent chapbook Three Novenas was published by auric books in 2022. They are the recipient of a 2014 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry\, and a 2019 Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant in poetry. She was the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fello w in Music at Lincoln College\, University of Oxford (2020-2022). She hol ds a PhD in Musicology from the University of York and a BA with honors i n Music from the University of Bristol. She spent her second undergraduat e year at McGill University as an exchange student. She taught music inte rnationally for almost a decade after graduating from Bristol. \n\nDr Ege is a leading interpreter and scholar of the African American composer Fl orence B. Price. Dr Ege's publications and performances shed an important light on composers from underrepresented backgrounds. In 2023\, she won the Society for American Music's Irving Lowens Article Award for "Chicago \, the 'City We Love to Call Home!': Intersectionality\, Narrativity\, an d Locale in the Music of Florence Beatrice Price and Theodora Sturkow Ryd er" (American Music journal). In 2021\, she received the American Musicol ogical Society's Noah Greenberg Award for her Black Renaissance Woman alb um. In 2019\, she received both the Society for American Music's Eileen S outhern Fellowship and a Newberry Library Short-Term Residential Fellowsh ip for her work on women's contributions to concert life in interwar Chic ago. \n \n

Will Alexander is widely considered one of th e most important living Black experimental poets in the US. His most rece nt poetry collection\, Refractive Africa\, was nominated for a Pulitzer A ward. Alexander's over two dozen books of poetry include Across the Vapou r Gulf (2017)\, Compression & Purity (2011)\, The Sri Lankan Loxodrome (2 009)\, Asia & Haiti (1995)\, and The Stratospheric Canticles (1995). He h as taught at many colleges and universities\, including the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics\, the University of California\, and Hofstr a University\, among others. His collection Singing In Magnetic Hoofbeat: Essays\, Prose\, Texts\, Interviews\, and a Lecture (2013) was awarded a n American Book Award. Alexander was a 2022 finalist for the Pulitzer Pri ze. His other honors include a Whiting Fellowship for Poetry\, a Californ ia Arts Council Fellowship\, and the 2016 Jackson Poetry Prize.

\n \n< p>Mexico City-based Lucía Hinojo sa Gaxiola is an incredibly wide-ranging poet\, musician\, visual art ist\, and performer whose first book\, The Telaraña Circuit\, was publish ed in 2023. She exhibits and performs in multiple media\, fusing her poet ic practice with sound\, film\, drawing and installation to explore the m ateriality and transmutation of language\, archive\, memory\, and the eco logy of sound. Her work also explores the somatic and improvisatory aspec ts of performance as a collective and collaborative practice. She has rec ently exhibited & performed at Vernacular Institute (Mexico City)\; Ex-Te resa Arte Actual (Mexico City)\; Pequod Co. (Mexico City)\; Museo de Arte Moderno (Mexico City)\; The Poetry Project (NYC)\; Microscope Gallery (N YC)\; among others. She is the author of O (Cielo Abierto) and The Telara ña Circuit (Tender Buttons) and co-edits diSONARE\, an experimental edito rial platform from Mexico City.
