DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert celebrating the sesquicentennial of Maur
ice Ravel's birth! Violinist Gabriel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Ba
lbi present an inventive program that traces his far-reaching influence o
n chamber music from the early 20th century to today. At its heart is Rav
el's Sonata for Violin and Cello\, a work of radical clarity and contrapu
ntal innovation\, composed in memory of Claude Debussy.\n \nViolinist Gab
riel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Balbi pair Ravel's masterwork with
music by Béla Bartók\, Jean Martinon\, Augusta Read Thomas\, and Alice Ho
ng\, each reflecting a different facet of the evolving modernist and post
modern chamber idiom.\n \nThe program culminates in the world premiere of
Five Duos by Gilbert Amy\, composed expressly for the performers. A lead
ing figure in postwar French music and former director of IRCAM\, Amy is
known for his synthesis of formal rigor and lyrical depth. His new work c
ontinues a tradition shaped by Ravel himself\, offering a contemporary vo
 ice in a century-spanning dialogue.\n \nPresented in collaboration with V
illa Albertine\, the Departments of Music and Romance Studies at Duke Uni
versity\, this program invites reflection on continuity and transformatio
n within the musical imagination.\n\nFree and open to the public. All are
  welcome.\n\nProgram\nCarl Philip Emmanuel Bach (1714-1788) - 2'\nPRESTO

DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed pianist Kwan Yi brings to life one o
f Franz Liszt's most iconic and evocative masterpieces: Années de pèlerin
age\, Deuxième année: Italie (S. 161). This extraordinary work\, composed
between 1838 and 1849\, is Liszt's musical reflection on his travels thr
ough Italy-a journey steeped in Renaissance art\, poetry\, and spirituali
ty. Each piece in the set is infused with the soul of Italy\, from the sc
ulptural grandeur of Michelangelo to the lyrical beauty of Petrarch's son
nets. Yi guides audiences through this rich artistic landscape\, culminat
ing in the electrifying Après une lecture de Dante\, known as the "Dante
Sonata"-a thunderous\, emotionally charged tour de force that evokes the
torment and transcendence of The Divine Comedy. With his virtuosic comman
d and poetic sensitivity\, Yi promises an unforgettable performance of a
work that bridges visual art\, literature\, and the heights of Romantic p
iano expression.\n\nFree and open to the public. All are welcome.
