DESCRIPTION:Music makes us feel-alive\, emotional\, and deeply human. But
what makes music distinctly American?\n\nIn this studio recital\, Duke ce
llists explore works by American composers and others who sought to captu
re the sound\, spirit\, and experience of America. Through a wide-ranging
program\, the performers consider how music can reflect identity\, place
\, memory\, and the many evolving ideas of what it means to be American.\
n\nThis performance is part of "We the People\," a Duke and Durham collab
oration marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration o
f Independence through public events that examine the nation's evolving i
dentity. Drawing from the opening words of the Constitution\, the project
invites us to consider who "the people" have been and who we aspire to b
e within the ongoing story of the United States.\n\nThis event is free an
