DESCRIPTION:RSVP to kmc156@duke.edu by Sep. 4\nfor advance reading materia
ls\n\nThis chapter focuses on the role gender and sexual imagery\nplay in
imagining and structuring humanity's relationship with\nthe natural worl
 d. I examine two novels by the contemporary\nAustrian writer Raoul Schrot
 t that reflect meta-aesthetically on\nsuch gender/sexual imagery in order
to effect a figural shift in\nthe imagination of the world from "globe"
to "planet." I ground\nmy analysis on Gayatri Spivak's notion of "planeta
rity\," which\nnotes the historical association in psychoanalysis between
the\nvagina and the uncanny and the changing influence of this\nassociat
ion in depicting encounters with natural space\, as well\nas other theori
es from ecofeminism and queer ecology.

DESCRIPTION:Come Talk about Issues Related to Gender\, Sexuality & Femini
st Studies\nJoin us for a casual dinner and conversation with GSF faculty
to learn more about our classes as well as our major and minors!\n\nRSVP
by Oct. 4th to GSFS@duke.edu\n\nHere's what our majors had to say:\nThis
major has taught me how factors such as gender\, race\, sexuality\, and
class are woven into almost every facet of life. I am more critical of
things that I have been taught ... and feel more validated in my own expe
riences." ~ Tiana '22\n"I find that GSF enhanced my vision of the worl
d and the possibilities therein. By sharpening my mind\, it also sharpene
d my pen to write critically\, engagingly\, and creatively about the worl
d around me and the brighter futures we all as students hope to create."

DESCRIPTION:RSVP to kmc156@duke.edu by Oct. 16th for advance reading mater
ials.\n\nColombia's prison system has been in a state of unconstitutional
crisis for more than 25 years. Violence\, overcrowding\, infrastructural
decrepitude\, and corruption all limit possibilities for dignified life
behind bars. Given the incapacity or unwillingness of the Colombian state
to fulfill its legal obligations to the incarcerated population\, prison
ers rely on family members and loved ones for everything from basic toile
tries to emotional support to political advocacy. For incarcerated trans
people\, the need for care is especially acute. Although Colombia's legal
regime provides trans people with rights and benefits that nominally ens
ure them access to such necessities as healthcare\, intimacy\, gender ide
ntity documentation\, and social recognition\, in practice\, they are sys
tematically abandoned to fend for themselves in conditions of precarious
neglect\, to fight to make flimsy legal guarantees into concrete reality.
In this paper\, I ask who performs the work to care for trans people beh
ind bars\, what form this care takes\, and how it can help us to understa
nd the (trans)feminization of care labor\, the relationship between love
and obligation in conditions of confinement\, and how chosen communities
of currently- and formerly-incarcerated trans people cohere through pract
ices of mutual aid and advocacy. I draw on ongoing ethnographic fieldwork
with the Red Comunitaria Trans [Communitarian Trans Network]\, in partic
ular the "Cuerpos en Prisión\, Mentes en Acción" [Bodies in Prison\, Mind
s in Action] working group\, as well as my role as an embedded "pasante d
e investigación" [research intern] with the Grupo de Prisiones [Prison Gr
oup] legal clinic at the elite University of the Andes School of Law. \n\
nBio: Joe Hiller is a PhD candidate in the Department of Cultural Anthrop
 ology\, Duke University\, with a Certificate in Gender\, Sexuality\, and
Feminist Studies\, and a research intern at the Grupo de Prisiones Clínic
a Jurídica\, Facultad de Derecho\, Universidad de los Andes. His research
is informed by feminist prison abolitionist work\, trans studies\, and e
ngaged anthropology. This project gratefully acknowledges the support of

DESCRIPTION:Focusing on trans women's subjectivities\, this talk explores
the micro and macro registers of how everyday trans life was experienced\
, policed\, and cut short across the Weimar and Nazi regimes\, sometimes
in surprising-but always in uneven-ways.\n\nZavier Nunn is the postdocto
ral associate on the theme 'Histories of the Transgender Present' in the
Gender\, Sexuality and Feminist Studies Department at Duke University. Hi
s PhD dissertation provides an everyday history of trans feminine life in
Weimar and Nazi Germany\, which de-idealizes the European medico-legal c
odification of trans identity. Across his research\, he uses micro-histor
ical methods to unpick how macro systems and institutions are stitched to
gether\, and how affects circulate on a personal and collective level. Hi
s work is published in Past & Present and forthcoming in Gender & History
  and German History.

DESCRIPTION:Fu Pei-mei was a pioneering postwar television cooking instruc
tor and cookbook author from Taiwan\, dubbed as the "Julia Child of Chine
se cooking." She appeared on Taiwan Television for forty years\, starting
with the debut of the medium in 1962. She also authored several best-sel
ling bilingual Chinese-English cookbooks\, which appealed to domestic aud
iences of housewives in Taiwan\, as well as overseas Chinese and foreign
students around the world\, eager to learn how to cook Chinese food. This
talk will focus on Fu's bilingual cookbooks\, reflecting on the act of t
ranslation as well as the potential and limits of food in speaking across
cultural divides.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nMichelle T. King is an Associ
ate Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hi
ll\, specializing in modern Chinese gender and food history. She is the a
uthor of Chop Fry Watch Learn: Fu Pei-mei and the Making of Modern Chines
 e Food (W. W. Norton\, forthcoming)\, and Between Birth and Death: Female
Infanticide in Nineteenth-Century China (Stanford University Press\, 201
4).\n\nShe is co-editor of Modern Chinese Foodways (MIT Press\, forthcomi
ng)\, and editor of Culinary Nationalism in Asia (Bloomsbury Academic\, 2
019). A 2020-21 National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar\, sh
e lives in Chapel Hill with her family.\n\n**This event was organized by
the East Asian and Diaspora Studies graduate working group at Duke with s
upport from APSI and is part of a mini-series on "Diasporic Chinese Foodw
 ays."**

DESCRIPTION:Come meet each other\, introduce yourselves\, and have your qu
estions answered about Gender\, Sexuality & Feminist Studies.\n\nJoin us
for a casual dinner and conversation with GSF faculty to learn more about
our classes\, major\, and the GSF Honors Program!\n\n\nHere's what our m
ajors had to say:\nThis major has taught me how factors such as gender\,
race\, sexuality\, and class are woven into almost every facet of life.
I am more critical of things that I have been taught ... and feel more v
alidated in my own experiences." ~ Tiana '22\n"I find that GSF enhance
d my vision of the world and the possibilities therein. By sharpening my
mind\, it also sharpened my pen to write critically\, engagingly\, and cr
eatively about the world around me and the brighter futures we all as stu
dents hope to create." ~ James '23

DESCRIPTION:March 29th at noon (lunch to follow)\n"Glissant's Medusa: Sove
reign Cosmopoiesis and Unworldly Abjection"\nBlue Parlor\, East Campus\,
Duke University \n \nBuilding on Rizvana Bradley's suggestion that the c
ritical humanities has undertaken a "turn to the world\," this talk argue
s that this turn is enabled by an idealization of the concept of worlding
that disavows the desire for sovereignty that structures the process of
world-constitution\, however piously or altruistically the latter may be
construed. To make this case\, the talk will provide a rhetorical reading
of Glissant's "La barque ouverte" to show how Glissant's poetics of worl
ding otherwise generates the semblance of a "New World" of relationality
and non-totalitarian unity-in-diversity by obfuscating the structural rol
e that the production and appropriation of racialized/sexed abjection pla
ys within cosmopoiesis.\n \nThe seminar has one\, very short\, suggested
pre-read: Éduoard Glissant's "La barque ouverte" or "The Open Boat" from
Poetique de la Relation/Poetics of Relation. The French and English can
 be found here: https://duke.box.com/s/ctxni70p13qb2bkyxwc0ouw2vaw1a2w0. \

and Women's studies\, and a faculty affiliate of the Eidos LGBTQ+ Health
Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania. Their first book\, Binary L

with Duke University Press\; it argues that "sex" as a classification sys

DESCRIPTION:Reception to Follow\n\nShana Ye is an Associate Professor of W
omen and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto. Her research areas
 include transnational feminism\, queer theory\, post/socialist studies\,
affect studies\, and Sinophone science and technology studies. Currently\
, she is writing about virtual reality\, immersive technology and the mat
eriality of memory.\nWhat's the relationship between the discourse of que
er fluidity and the rise of China since the 1990s? In what ways are queer
history and futurity shaped by shifts in global postsocialist conditions
? What stories are amplified or sidelined through the performativity and
theatricality of queer politics? And what does it mean to write queerness
  as critical fabulations?\n\nBlending archival work\, ethnography\, and c
ultural analysis with memoir\, graphic arts\, and science fiction\, Shana
  Ye's Queer Chimerica: A Speculative Auto/Ethnography (2024) unpacks the
ways in which the transnational circulation of queer culture\, politics\,
and institutions are structured through the antagonist interdependence o
f China and the United States. In this talk\, the author will share stori
es about queer party cadres in the Cultural Revolution\, tongzhi activism
and HIV/AIDS community outreach after the Tiananmen upheaval\, feminist
artists and digital activists under Xi Jingping's China\, and fictional f
igures of future empire "Chimerica" to show the messiness of queer memory
and world-making. The talk will offer insight into the governmentality o
f LGBT rights\, the rules of legibility and recognition\, and the geo- an
d bio-politics of identity\, unveiling the uneven distributions of capita
l\, knowledge\, affect\, and opportunity that reproduce queer precarity a
 nd agency.

DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: States of Cultivation: Imperial Transition and Scie
ntific Agriculture in the Eastern Mediterranean\n\n\nElizabeth's research
examines the relationship between imperial governance\, expertise\, and
the environment. Focusing on the transition from the late Ottoman Empire
to the French Mandate period\, she analyzes how agricultural technologies
emerging during this period intersected with the development of new stra
tegies of rule and conceptions of expertise. By tracing the movement and
activities of global\, imperial and local actors in networks involved in
the production of knowledge regarding these new technologies and their im
plementation\, she investigates intellectual and practical continuities a
nd divergences in approaches to governance during the late Ottoman and Fr
ench mandate periods and their impacts on rural communities and environme
ntal management. Her work draws on materials from Ottoman and French arch
ives as well as sources from Lebanon\, the national archives of the UK an

to host a scholarly forum presenting Professor Christina León's recently
published book\, "Matters of Inscription: Reading Figures of Latinidad"
(NYU Press).\n\n"Matters of Inscription" explores feminist and queer insc

semiotics in art\, performance\, poetry\, plays\, and fiction. By delving
into these figural matters\, Assistant Professor in the Program in Liter

from biographical anchors.\n\nWe invite you to join us in the East Duke
Pink Parlor on February 7\, 2025 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.\, when Professor
Erin Graff Zivin (Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese\,

DESCRIPTION:A Deferential Diagnosis of Fatigue: A Performative Lecture by
 Rouzbeh Shadpey \n\nTuesday March 4 // 5:30pm // Pink Parlor\, East Duke
Building \n\nResponse by Nima Bassiri\, Program in Literature\n\nDescript
ion: The Patient was tired-this was his only symptom. His chief complaint
\, barely audible: "to be led back to a region where it might be possible
to be weary." During grand rounds\, all were present. All weighed in: th
 e Clinician\, the Psychiatrist\, the Psychoanalyst\, the Standardized Pat
ient\, the Forensic Expert (on behalf of the Insurer)\, the Phenomenologi
st. Even the Poet\, weary himself\, was in attendance. Since he could not
speak-since he was also a patient-he listened. Besides\, he had misheard
the brief: his diagnosis was deferential.\n \nBio: Rouzbeh Shadpey is an
artist\, writer\, and musician with a doctorate in medicine and indefati
gable fatigue. His work explores the aesthetics and poetics of weariness\
, alongside anticolonial modes of the clinic. Rouzbeh has exhibited and p
erformed at TULCA (Ireland)\, documenta fifteen (Germany)\, the Mosaic Ro
oms (UK). His writing appears in Parapraxis\, Decolonial Hacker\, Weird E

DESCRIPTION:The Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South is pleased
to host a scholarly forum presenting the recently published book\, "Mad
e in NuYoRico: Fania Records\, Latin Music\, and Salsa's Nuyorican Meanin
gs" (Duke University Press\, October 2024) by Professor Marisol Negrón (U
niversity of Massachusetts\, Boston). \n\nIn "Made in NuYoRico\," Profess
or Negrón tells the cultural history of salsa\, tracing the music's Nuyor
ican meanings over a fifty-year period that begins with the establishment
of Fania Records in 1964 and how it capitalized on salsa's Nuyorican ima
ginary to cultivate a global audience. Drawing on interviews with fans\,
legendary musicians\, and music industry figures as well as analyses of s
ongs\, albums\, films\, and archival documents\, Negrón shows how Nuyoric
an cultural and social histories became embedded in and impacted salsa mu
sic's flows during its foundational period in the mid-1960s and its boom
in the 1970s. Salsa's Nuyorican aesthetics challenged mainstream notions
of Americanness and Puerto Ricanness and produced an alternative public s
phere through which New York's poor and working-class Puerto Ricans could
contest racialization and colonial power. By outlining salsa's complicat
 ed musical\, cultural\, commercial\, racial\, gendered\, legal\, and poli
tical entanglements\, Negrón demonstrates its centrality to Nuyorican ide
ntity and subjectivity.\n\nWe invite you to join us in the East Duke Pink
Parlor on March 19\, 2025 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.\, when Professor Negrón
will be joined by Professor Mark Anthony Neal (Duke University) and Prof
essor Juan Otero Garabís (University of Puerto Rico). Their presentations
and Prof. Negrón's response will be followed by Q&A and discussion. The
panel will be moderated by Verónica Cora-Castillo (Ph.D candidate\, Roman
ce Studies).\n\nA reception with light refreshments will follow.

DESCRIPTION:In her talk\, "The Ritual Aesthetic as a Caribbean Paradigm: R
evisiting Katherine Dunham\, Maya Deren and Modernism in the Americas\,"
Professor Platón will examine the ways in which Caribbean rituals helped
form new currents in the performing and visual arts of the United States
starting in the 1940's. It highlights the way the Caribbean-inspired danc
e creations of dancer and choreographer\, Katherine Dunham\, and filmmake
r\, Maya Deren's own incorporation of Caribbean dance in experimental fil
m\, enacted strategies to enhance the politics of performances of identit
y that consider history\, embodied experience\, strategies for liberation
\, survival\, and memory. It proposes a discussion that refers to alterna
tive subjectivities for Black dancing bodies within the existing paradigm
s of the American public\, from the perspective of the Caribbean.\n \nPro
 fessor Platón is an independent professor\, curator\, writer\, performer\
, cultural producer\, and promoter\, currently teaching at UPR\, Rio Pied
ras in the English Department of the College of General Studies. She is p
art of the work group of Taller Comunidad la Goyco\, a community collecti
ve\, developing cultural projects for peaceful cohabitation in the Machuc
hal neighborhood in San Juan\, Puerto Rico.\n \nShe received an Andy Warh
ol Curatorial Research Fellowship (2019) for her project "Novenario" (MAC
Museum\, SJ\, PR)\, a reflection on the arts and mourning practices in c
ontemporary art of Puerto Rico\, stemming from the Hurricane María experi
ence. She hosted a curatorial platform at Taller Comunidad la Goyco\, cal
led: "Nos conocimos en los 90" with the Puerto Rico Arts Initiative\, a p
roject funded by the Mellon Foundation\; University of Texas\, Austin\; a
nd Northwestern University. She is currently hosting a curatorial platfor
m called "¿A cuánto está el cambio?\, using the cabaret format to showcas
e older women artists in our changing community. \n \nA reception with li
