DESCRIPTION:In Sick Work\, Rogers shows the unpaid labor it takes to be re
cognized as sick in the United States. Through a historical and ethnograp
hic account of myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/C
FS)-a disease defined by disproportionate exhaustion after any form of ex
ertion\, which has no cures or treatments-she reveals how changing format
ions of labor decide what counts as disability and what does not. Sicknes
 s\, she writes\, is not work's opposite. Rather\, people with ME/CFS are
forced to do their own labor of disease advocacy\, or "sick work\," even
as their symptoms prevent many from working paid jobs. Examining the ever
yday lives of people with ME/CFS and their activist movements\, Sick Work
demands a radical transformation of how work is defined and valued.

DESCRIPTION:Today\, more than 40 Asian American museums operate across the
United States. In the past 2 years alone\, 3 such museums have opened\,
including the AAPI History Museum in Providence\, Rhode Island\; the Muse
um of Asian Texans in Dallas\, Texas\; and the Filipino American Museum i
n Las Vegas\, Nevada. More are surely on the way as a bipartisan commissi
on is expected to deliver its report to Congress this fall regarding the
feasibility of establishing a national museum of Asian American history a
nd culture. These institutions join older museums like the Wing Luke in S
eattle and the Chinese Historical Society of America in San Francisco tha
t date back to the civil rights struggles and immigration reforms of the
1960s. Drawing on sources and methods in U.S. cultural history\, Asian Am
erican studies\, and museum studies\, this talk charts the changing lands
cape of Asian American museums and explores why and how museums have been
meaningful forms of community-building and activism for Asian Americans
from the 1960s to the present. Understanding these museums as sites of bo
th cohesion and conflict reveals how they have redefined not only museum
practice\, but also the contours of Asian America.

DESCRIPTION:This talk interrogates how slavery animates the psychic counte
rs of abortion concerns. From the use of the Civil War as a metaphor for
battles over personhood by abortion legal scholars such as Mary Ziegler t
o the constitutional originalism espoused by Justice Samuel Alito's readi
ng of the fourteenth amendment in Dobbs\, slavery occupies a foundational
psychic landscape with the rhetorical strategies of abortion battles. To
trace this emergence\, this talk returns to nineteenth century medical j
urisprudence to consider how the concept of portio viscerum matris situat
es gestation as the dividing line between the status of life and the cond
 itions of property.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk and Q&A with author Dr. Alexis Shotwel
l.\n\n"Liberation Is Other People" begins with the truth that many of the
  crises we face-climate collapse\, war\, systemic inequality-are human-ma
de and therefore humanly transformable. Yet such complex problems cannot
be solved by heroic individuals working incredibly hard\, or being person
ally pure and upstanding. Every attempt to repair exposes how deeply our
lives are entangled across histories of power\, privilege\, and vulnerabi
lity. Rejecting the idea that personal virtue or guilt can solve the worl
d's problems\, Alexis Shotwell offers a philosophy and practice of collec
tive freedom through collective struggle. Drawing on thinkers such as Ang
ela Davis and Ursula K. Le Guin\, she argues that freedom is not the powe
r to act alone but the capacity to shape the world with others. Through s
ustained engagement with climate politics\, white settler responsibility\
, and the reimagining of sexuality and gender\, this book shows how turni
ng towards complicity and acknowledging that none of us stand outside the
systems we wish to change can open new possibilities for solidarity and
transformation.\n\nRather than a call to purity or perfection\, Liberatio
n Is Other People is a vision of politics as a shared\, necessarily imper
fect process of creation. Shotwell builds a compelling case that solidari
ty can be a source of joy\, inspiration\, and political power. In an age
of division and isolation\, Shotwell insists that our greatest possibilit
y lies not in fixing the world alone but in remaking it-together.\n\nAlex
is Shotwell's work focuses on complexity\, complicity\, and collective tr
ansformation. A professor at Carleton University\, on unceded Algonquin l
and\, she is the co-investigator for the AIDS Activist History Project (a
idsactivisthistory.ca)\, and the author of Knowing Otherwise: Race\, Gend
er\, and Implicit Understanding\, Against Purity: Living Ethically in Com
promised Times\, and Liberation is Other People.
