DESCRIPTION:Beans Velocci is a historian of sex\, science\, and classifica
tion. They are an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and So
ciology of Science\, core faculty in the Program in Gender\, Sexuality\,
and Women's studies\, and a faculty affiliate of the Eidos LGBTQ+ Health
Initiative at the University of Pennsylvania. Their first book\, Binary L
ogic: The Power of Incoherence in American Sex Science is under contract
with Duke University Press\; it argues that "sex" as a classification sys
tem and "male" and "female" as categories work precisely because multiple
conflicting enactments of them exist simultaneously. Velocci's work has
been published in Transgender Studies Quarterly\, Historical Studies in t
he Natural Sciences\, The American Naturalist\, and Cell\, among others\,
and has received several accolades including the Margaret Rossiter Histo
ry of Women in Science Prize\, the John D'Emilio LGBTQ History Dissertati
on Award\, and the Committee on LGBT History Gregory Sprague Prize.

DESCRIPTION:Reception to Follow\n\nShana Ye is an Associate Professor of W
omen and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto. Her research areas
 include transnational feminism\, queer theory\, post/socialist studies\,
affect studies\, and Sinophone science and technology studies. Currently\
, she is writing about virtual reality\, immersive technology and the mat
eriality of memory.\nWhat's the relationship between the discourse of que
er fluidity and the rise of China since the 1990s? In what ways are queer
history and futurity shaped by shifts in global postsocialist conditions
? What stories are amplified or sidelined through the performativity and
theatricality of queer politics? And what does it mean to write queerness
  as critical fabulations?\n\nBlending archival work\, ethnography\, and c
ultural analysis with memoir\, graphic arts\, and science fiction\, Shana
  Ye's Queer Chimerica: A Speculative Auto/Ethnography (2024) unpacks the
ways in which the transnational circulation of queer culture\, politics\,
and institutions are structured through the antagonist interdependence o
f China and the United States. In this talk\, the author will share stori
es about queer party cadres in the Cultural Revolution\, tongzhi activism
and HIV/AIDS community outreach after the Tiananmen upheaval\, feminist
artists and digital activists under Xi Jingping's China\, and fictional f
igures of future empire "Chimerica" to show the messiness of queer memory
and world-making. The talk will offer insight into the governmentality o
f LGBT rights\, the rules of legibility and recognition\, and the geo- an
d bio-politics of identity\, unveiling the uneven distributions of capita
l\, knowledge\, affect\, and opportunity that reproduce queer precarity a
 nd agency.

DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: States of Cultivation: Imperial Transition and Scie
ntific Agriculture in the Eastern Mediterranean\n\n\nElizabeth's research
examines the relationship between imperial governance\, expertise\, and
the environment. Focusing on the transition from the late Ottoman Empire
to the French Mandate period\, she analyzes how agricultural technologies
emerging during this period intersected with the development of new stra
tegies of rule and conceptions of expertise. By tracing the movement and
activities of global\, imperial and local actors in networks involved in
the production of knowledge regarding these new technologies and their im
plementation\, she investigates intellectual and practical continuities a
nd divergences in approaches to governance during the late Ottoman and Fr
ench mandate periods and their impacts on rural communities and environme
ntal management. Her work draws on materials from Ottoman and French arch
ives as well as sources from Lebanon\, the national archives of the UK an

DESCRIPTION:A Deferential Diagnosis of Fatigue: A Performative Lecture by
 Rouzbeh Shadpey \n\nTuesday March 4 // 5:30pm // Pink Parlor\, East Duke
Building \n\nResponse by Nima Bassiri\, Program in Literature\n\nDescript
ion: The Patient was tired-this was his only symptom. His chief complaint
\, barely audible: "to be led back to a region where it might be possible
to be weary." During grand rounds\, all were present. All weighed in: th
 e Clinician\, the Psychiatrist\, the Psychoanalyst\, the Standardized Pat
ient\, the Forensic Expert (on behalf of the Insurer)\, the Phenomenologi
st. Even the Poet\, weary himself\, was in attendance. Since he could not
speak-since he was also a patient-he listened. Besides\, he had misheard
the brief: his diagnosis was deferential.\n \nBio: Rouzbeh Shadpey is an
artist\, writer\, and musician with a doctorate in medicine and indefati
gable fatigue. His work explores the aesthetics and poetics of weariness\
, alongside anticolonial modes of the clinic. Rouzbeh has exhibited and p
erformed at TULCA (Ireland)\, documenta fifteen (Germany)\, the Mosaic Ro
oms (UK). His writing appears in Parapraxis\, Decolonial Hacker\, Weird E
conomies. He currently lives in the Netherlands\, where he is a member of
the 2025 cohort of Jan van Eyck Academie.\n \nSponsored by Department of

DESCRIPTION:The Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South is pleased
to host a scholarly forum presenting the recently published book\, "Mad
e in NuYoRico: Fania Records\, Latin Music\, and Salsa's Nuyorican Meanin
gs" (Duke University Press\, October 2024) by Professor Marisol Negrón (U
niversity of Massachusetts\, Boston). \n\nIn "Made in NuYoRico\," Profess
or Negrón tells the cultural history of salsa\, tracing the music's Nuyor
ican meanings over a fifty-year period that begins with the establishment
of Fania Records in 1964 and how it capitalized on salsa's Nuyorican ima
ginary to cultivate a global audience. Drawing on interviews with fans\,
legendary musicians\, and music industry figures as well as analyses of s
ongs\, albums\, films\, and archival documents\, Negrón shows how Nuyoric
an cultural and social histories became embedded in and impacted salsa mu
sic's flows during its foundational period in the mid-1960s and its boom
in the 1970s. Salsa's Nuyorican aesthetics challenged mainstream notions
of Americanness and Puerto Ricanness and produced an alternative public s
phere through which New York's poor and working-class Puerto Ricans could
contest racialization and colonial power. By outlining salsa's complicat
 ed musical\, cultural\, commercial\, racial\, gendered\, legal\, and poli
tical entanglements\, Negrón demonstrates its centrality to Nuyorican ide
ntity and subjectivity.\n\nWe invite you to join us in the East Duke Pink
Parlor on March 19\, 2025 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.\, when Professor Negrón
will be joined by Professor Mark Anthony Neal (Duke University) and Prof
essor Juan Otero Garabís (University of Puerto Rico). Their presentations
and Prof. Negrón's response will be followed by Q&A and discussion. The
panel will be moderated by Verónica Cora-Castillo (Ph.D candidate\, Roman
ce Studies).\n\nA reception with light refreshments will follow.

DESCRIPTION:In her talk\, "The Ritual Aesthetic as a Caribbean Paradigm: R
evisiting Katherine Dunham\, Maya Deren and Modernism in the Americas\,"
Professor Platón will examine the ways in which Caribbean rituals helped
form new currents in the performing and visual arts of the United States
starting in the 1940's. It highlights the way the Caribbean-inspired danc
e creations of dancer and choreographer\, Katherine Dunham\, and filmmake
r\, Maya Deren's own incorporation of Caribbean dance in experimental fil
m\, enacted strategies to enhance the politics of performances of identit
y that consider history\, embodied experience\, strategies for liberation
\, survival\, and memory. It proposes a discussion that refers to alterna
tive subjectivities for Black dancing bodies within the existing paradigm
s of the American public\, from the perspective of the Caribbean.\n \nPro
 fessor Platón is an independent professor\, curator\, writer\, performer\
, cultural producer\, and promoter\, currently teaching at UPR\, Rio Pied
ras in the English Department of the College of General Studies. She is p
art of the work group of Taller Comunidad la Goyco\, a community collecti
ve\, developing cultural projects for peaceful cohabitation in the Machuc
hal neighborhood in San Juan\, Puerto Rico.\n \nShe received an Andy Warh
ol Curatorial Research Fellowship (2019) for her project "Novenario" (MAC
Museum\, SJ\, PR)\, a reflection on the arts and mourning practices in c
ontemporary art of Puerto Rico\, stemming from the Hurricane María experi
ence. She hosted a curatorial platform at Taller Comunidad la Goyco\, cal
led: "Nos conocimos en los 90" with the Puerto Rico Arts Initiative\, a p
roject funded by the Mellon Foundation\; University of Texas\, Austin\; a
nd Northwestern University. She is currently hosting a curatorial platfor
m called "¿A cuánto está el cambio?\, using the cabaret format to showcas
e older women artists in our changing community. \n \nA reception with li

DESCRIPTION:The talk explores how the expansion of the American state for
the First World War reshaped the nature of governance. This wartime state
expansion is examined through the creation\, structure\, activities\, an
d impact of the Council of Defense system on the ability of the United St
ates to mobilize for a significant conflict in a foreign land. Positione
d between the national government and the people\, state Councils of Defe
nse mediated the activities of public\, private\, and individual efforts
in support of mobilization activities. Because of this intermediary posit
ioning\, the councils were instrumental in expanding state capacity and c
apability for military and resource mobilization and supporting an increa
se in the nation's ability to mobilize for the war. The councils' interm
ediary role\, however\, also allowed those managing the mobilization to p
revent any significant challenge to social and political structures\, des
pite the dynamic changes wrought by the need to mobilize the nation for w
