DESCRIPTION:The Duke AI Health Community of Practice is pleased to announc
e the Duke Machine Learning Summer School 2025: Generative AI (MLSS-GenAI
)\, a 5-day in-person class that provides lectures on the fundamentals of
generative artificial intelligence methods and applications. The curricu
lum is designed for individuals interested in learning about generative A
I\, with a focus on recent deep learning methodologies. The MLSS-GenAI wi
ll introduce the mathematics and statistics at the foundation of current
generative and representation learning models and provide hands-on traini
ng in the latest machine learning software using the PyTorch framework.\n
\nStrength in mathematics and statistics is a significant plus and will m
ake all MLSS-GenAI material more accessible\; however\, it is not require
d to benefit from much of the program. Concepts will be introduced as int
uitively as possible\, with minimal math and technical details. As concep
ts are developed further\, more math will be introduced\, but only the mi
nimum necessary to explain the concepts. Case studies will demonstrate ho
w the technology is used in practical generative AI applications. Finally
\, the class will also introduce participants to the coding software used
to make such technology work in practice.

DESCRIPTION:Darrell Irvine\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor at the Scripps Researc
 h Institute\, where\nhe recently relocated after 20 years as a faculty me
mber at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also an Investig
ator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His research is focused on t
he application of engineering tools to problems in cellular immunology an
d the development of new materials for vaccine and drug delivery. Major e
fforts of the laboratory are directed toward vaccine development for HIV
and cancer immunotherapy. Dr. Irvine's work has been recognized by numero
us awards\, including election as a Member of the National Academy of Med
icine\, Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society\, Fellow of the Amer
ican Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering\, and appointment a
s an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is the autho
r of over 200 publications\, reviews\, and book chapters and an inventor
on numerous patents.\n\nEngineering germinal center responses for next-ge
neration vaccines\n\nVaccines are the most effective public health interv
ention ever developed and have saved millions of lives from infectious di
sease. However\, effective vaccines remain elusive for challenging pathog
ens such as HIV\, and the development of vaccines capable of cross-strain
protective immunity against pathogen variants are desired for current an
d future viral threats. Effective vaccines stimulate germinal center (GC)
reactions where B cells proliferate and mutate their antigen receptors\,
leading to a diverse pool of memory B cells and plasma cells producing p
rotective antibodies. Despite its central role in the development of humo
ral immunity\, we poorly understand how vaccines can be designed to modul
ate the GC response. We recently explored roles for vaccine adjuvants and
antigen-displaying nanoparticles in shaping the germinal center reaction
 .

DESCRIPTION:Title: Engineering Wellness: A Longitudinal Study of Undergrad
uate Student Mental Health in Engineering\n\nAbstract: Higher education i
s facing a mental health crisis that continues to intensify\, underscorin
g the urgent need to increase our understanding of student mental health
to develop proactive supports. In this seminar\, I will investigate the n
arrative of required stress and hardship during engineering programs that
perpetuates a stress culture and explore how perceptions around norms im
pact student help-seeking and peer interactions. I will share our work to
build predictive models to enhance our understanding of the dynamic and
multivariate factors related to student mental health. Finally\, I will s
hare how we connect this research to curricular interventions and change
the narrative in engineering to create a culture of wellness.\n\nBio: Kar
in Jensen\, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in Biomedical Engineering and
Engineering Education Research at the University of Michigan. Her resear
ch interests include mental health and wellness\, engineering career path
ways\, and engagement of engineering faculty in engineering education res
earch. Her work was recognized with a PECASE award in 2025 and NSF CAREER
award in 2019. Jensen is an associate editor for the Journal of Women an

DESCRIPTION:Mikhail Shapiro is the Max Delbrück Professor of Chemical Engi
neering and Medical Engineering\, an HHMI Investigator\, and Director of
the Center for Molecular and Cellular Medicine at Caltech. The Shapiro la
boratory develops biomolecular technologies allowing cells to be imaged a
nd controlled inside the body using noninvasive methods such as ultrasoun
 d. These technologies enable the study of biological function in vivo and
the development of cell-based and gene-based diagnostic and therapeutic
agents. Mikhail received his PhD in Biological Engineering from MIT and h
is BSc in Neuroscience from Brown. He conducted post-doctoral research at
the University of Chicago and the University of California\, Berkeley\,
where he was a Miller Fellow. Mikhail's awards include the NIH Pioneer Aw
ard\, the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise\, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher
-Scholar Award\, the Carl Hellmuth Hertz Ultrasonics Award and the Fulbri
ght-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair. Mikhail is an inducted Fellow of the
World Molecular Imaging Society. Alongside academic research\, Mikhail h
as been involved as a founder and adviser to several biotechnology and me
dical device startups. \n\nTalking to cells: biomolecular ultrasound to i
mage and control cells deep inside the body\n\nStudying biological functi
on in intact organisms and developing targeted cellular therapies require
s methods to image and control the function of specific cells deep inside
the body. Fluorescent proteins and optogenetics serve this purpose in sm
all\, translucent specimens\, but are limited by the poor penetration of
light into deeper tissues. In contrast\, most non-invasive techniques suc
h as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging - while based on energy fo
rms that penetrate tissue - are not effectively coupled to cellular funct
ion. Shapiro's work attempts to bridge this gap by engineering biomolecul
es with the appropriate physical properties to interact with sound waves
and magnetic fields. In this talk\, Shapiro will describe his lab's recen
t work on biomolecular reporters and actuators for ultrasound.\n\nRecepti
 on to follow.

DESCRIPTION:Claudia Fischbach-Teschl is the James M & Marsha McCormick Dir
ector and Stanley Bryer 1946 Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Corne
ll University. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Technology from t
he University of Regensburg\, Germany and conducted her postdoctoral work
at Harvard University in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science
 s. Her lab utilizes engineering tools and strategies to gain a better und
erstanding of how tumor-microenvironment interactions regulate cancer dev
elopment\, progression\, and therapy resistance with a focus on cell-ECM
interactions. She is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and B
iological Engineering (AIMBE)\, the Biomedical Engineering Society\, and
the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. She is the recipient of
the Momentum Mid-Career Award by the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineeri
ng Special Interest Group of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) an
d the inaugural awardee of a Rosalind Franklin Award by the Max Planck Ce
ntre for Physics in Medicine in Germany. \n\nECM Biophysics and Cancer: M
 echanisms\, Models\, and Therapeutic Insights\nMicroenvironmental changes
contribute to the pathogenesis of cancer\, but our understanding of how
altered cell heterogeneity\, extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition\, and
mechanical cues impact the development\, progression\, and therapy respon
se of cancer is relatively limited. More intricate models are needed to e
lucidate the complex biochemical and biophysical interactions that drive
tumor initiation\, metastasis\, metabolic adaptation\, and immune evasion
. The fields of biomaterials and tumor engineering provide increasingly s
ophisticated tools and strategies to recapitulate and monitor relevant pr
operties of tumor-microenvironment interactions. These approaches not onl
y bear tremendous potential to advance our current understanding of cance
r but are also increasingly explored for more clinically relevant drug te
sting. This talk will highlight specific examples of how the microenviron
ment regulates the highly dynamic nature of cancer and will outline oppor
tunities and challenges of the field of tumor engineering.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe rational design and control of defects in elect
ronic ceramics is critical for property control and optimizing electronic
or electrochemical device performance. Point defects\, in particular\, i
nfluence properties such as conductivity\, electric polarization and\, as
most recently discovered\, the ability to switch polarization to engende
r ferroelectricity in wurtzite-structure materials. In polycrystalline ma
terials\, the interactions between point defects and higher dimensional d
efects\, such as grain boundaries and interfaces\, also affect the macros
copic material response. Furthermore\, once in device applications\, defe
ct interactions with external fields influence material performance and\,
in some cases\, instigate material degradation and failure. This lecture
will review developments in our understanding of defect disorder and def
ect dynamics in electronic ceramics. It will highlight the role of transm
ission electron microscopy techniques for assessing local to mesoscale di
