DESCRIPTION:Join the Nicholas Institute and the Nicholas School for a talk
by David Spence (University of Texas at Austin)\, author of Climate of C
ontempt: Rescuing the U.S. Energy Transition from Voter Partisanship (Col
umbia University Press\, 2024). Open to all.\n\nGetting to net zero carbo
n emissions will require Congress to more aggressively regulate greenhous
e gas emissions. If the idea has wide support (and it does)\, why can't C
ongress muster the will to do it?\n\nJoin us for a talk by David Spence (
University of Texas at Austin)\, who tackles this question in his new boo
k Climate of Contempt: Rescuing the U.S. Energy Transition from Voter Par
tisanship (Columbia University Press\, 2024). Spence proposes that the pr
oblem is not that members of Congress are unresponsive to voters-but that
most are responsive to the most partisan voters who perceive the most ne
gative effects of these regulations. Meanwhile\, the online information e
nvironment- rife with misinformation and spin- pushes all of Americans to
become more partisan over time. Spence argues that this environment bree
ds misunderstanding of the value choices the energy transition entails an
d warps each party's sense of its political opponents.

DESCRIPTION:Amy Robison Springfield\n\nAnalysis of the Effects of Copper I
ons on Protein\n\nIn order for the proteostasis network to function prope
rly\, metallostasis must be maintained. Up to a third of proteins within
a proteome are metalloproteins and the metal is integral to the proteins
catalytic activity\, structure\, or regulation. If proteostasis is dysreg
ulated it often coexists with the dysregulation of metallostasis and vice
versa. Within a class of diseases known as proteinopathies that are char
acterized by protein aggregation researchers have also found increased co
pper levels. On the other hand\, when the cell enters copper-toxicity\, p
roteins within the cell begin to aggregate. The exact effect of copper (C
 u) on this protein aggregation still requires further research. The goal
of this work is to gain insight into the mechanism of Cu-induced protein
precipitation thereby helping further understand the effects of Cu ions o
n protein aggregation. This work focuses on exposing proteins to Cu ions
outside of the cells biological regulatory pathway and determining the bi
ophysical characteristics of their interactions. This allows for further
understanding of the inherent properties that increase or decrease a prot
eins susceptibility to Cu-induced precipitation. Bottom-up proteomics tec
hniques are used to assess individual proteins susceptibilities to precip
itation. This data allows for determination of the biophysical characteri
stics affecting a protein's susceptibility. Electron paramagnetic resonan
ce and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were used to determin
e the oxidation state and location of copper ions post exposure to protei
ns. To compare between cell lines\, bottom-up proteomic methodologies wer
e employed and key intrinsic and extrinsic factors determining the differ
ential susceptibilities of the cell lines were determined. To provide ins
ight as to how Cu's redox activity affects precipitation\, bottom-up prot
eomic methodologies were run on proteins precipitated by Cu2+\, Cu1+\, an
d Zn2+. This showed that for both oxidation states and Zn the same protei
ns precipitated with the same relative susceptibilities\, but the overall
concentration of metal differed. Additionally\, reversibility assays sho
wed that this protein precipitation was reversible for all three metals a
nd in two different cell lines. Lastly\, a bottom-up proteomics methodolo
gy utilizing iodoacetamide-alkyne was developed for identification of cry
ptic metal binding sites on cysteines

DESCRIPTION:Defense: Natalie Schulte\n\nThe Biophysical Characterization o
f Extracellular and Intracellular Metalloprotein Complexes\n\nMetals like
copper and zinc play an essential role in cellular function such as enzy
me cofactors\, methods of electron transport\, metabolic oxidation\, and
protein structure. However\, essential metals are delicately balanced in
systems to maintain homeostasis\, as too much metal can have detrimental
effects including oxidative stress and protein aggregation that causes ce
lls to die. Copper is particularly interesting because it can exist and c
ycle through multiple oxidation states\, Cu+ and Cu2+\, within biological
systems. This metal homeostasis is not only essential to the intracellul
ar environment but exists in the extracellular space as well with protein
s like human serum albumin and mucin glycoproteins helping to regulate me
tals being transported to cells for uptake. The goal of this work was to
characterize metal binding\, ternary complex formation\, and transport of
extracellular and intracellular mammalian and bacterial proteins to bett
er understand metal homeostasis. To do this\, extracellular proteins huma
n serum albumin and a segment of an intestinal mucin glycoprotein\, MUC2
D1\, were investigated for their abilities to transport Cu+ to a model of
the cellular copper importer Ctr1 and to simultaneously bind Cu+ and Cu2
+ to begin to understand the intestinal protein's role in copper homeosta
sis\, respectively. Additionally\, intracellular bacterial glyceraldehyde
-3-phosphate dehydrogenase was studied to investigate the impact of cellu
lar copper stress on function\, and periplasmic New-Delhi metallo-beta-la
ctamase-1 was used as a model protein to understand the propensity of ter
nary complexes to form with commonly used fluorescent indicators and zinc
. This conglomeration of extracellular and intracellular biophysical char
acterization shows for the first time the ability of human serum albumin
to bind and transport Cu+ to a model peptide of Ctr1\, MUC2 D1 to simulta
neously bind multiple oxidation states of copper\, and the oxidative stre
ss that can occur to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase under coppe
r stress and the natural defenses the cell can take to recover the damage
 .

DESCRIPTION:AI for Mathematics (AI4Math) is intellectually intriguing and
crucial for AI-driven system design and verification. Much of the recent
progress in this field has paralleled advances in natural language proces
sing\, especially by training large language models on curated mathematic
al text datasets. As a complementary yet less explored avenue\, formal ma
thematical reasoning is grounded in formal systems such as Lean\, which c
an verify the correctness of reasoning and provide automatic feedback. Th
is talk introduces the basics of AI for formal mathematical reasoning\, f
ocusing on two central tasks: theorem proving (generating formal proofs g
iven theorem statements) and autoformalization (translating from informal
to formal). I will highlight the unique challenges of these tasks throug
h two recent projects: one on proving inequality problems from mathematic
s olympiads\, and another on autoformalizing Euclidean geometry problems.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Chemistry is will be hosting Professor Sharo
 n Hammes-Schiffer (Princeton University) on Monday\, April 20\, 2026 for
the Fritz London Memorial Lecture. The seminar\, "Proton-Coupled Electron
Transfer in Catalysis and Energy Conversion" will begin at 3.30pm and wi
ll be followed by a reception in French Science.\n\nProton-coupled electr
on transfer (PCET) reactions play a vital role in a wide range of chemica
l and biological processes. This talk will summarize the main concepts fr
om our PCET theory and will present applications to catalysis and energy
conversion. Our general theoretical formulation for PCET includes the qua
ntum mechanical effects of the electrons and transferring protons\, as we
ll as the motions of the donor-acceptor modes and solvent or protein envi
ronment. This PCET theory enables the calculation of rate constants and k
inetic isotope effects for comparison to experiment and the study of none
quilibrium dynamics. Applications to PCET in enzymes\, molecular electroc
atalysts\, proton wires\, heterogeneous electrochemical systems\, and pho
tocatalysts will be discussed. These theoretical studies have identified
thermodynamically and kinetically favorable mechanisms\, as well as the r
 oles of hydrogen tunneling\, excited vibronic states\, reorganization\, e
lectrostatics\, and conformational motions. The resulting insights are gu
iding the design of more effective catalysts and energy conversion device
s.\n\nThe Fritz London Memorial Lectures have brought to the scientific c
ommunity a distinguished group of lecturers including twenty-four Nobel l
aureates. The scientific interests of each lecturer impinge at one or mor
e points upon the various fields of physics and chemistry to which Fritz
London contributed. \n\nWe look forward to hosting Prof. Hammes-Schiffer.
