DESCRIPTION:Single-molecule measurements have the power to uncover heterog
 eneity and dynamics obscured by bulk methods\, but are severely limited t
 o surface-tethered phenomena. Over the past seven years\, our group has s
 ought to overcome this barrier by developing high-speed\, active-feedback
  3D single-molecule microscopy methods. In the first part of this talk\, 
 we introduce a new active-feedback 3D microscope to capture the dynamics 
 of rapidly diffusing single molecules in solution (3D Single-Molecule Act
 ive Real-time Tracking or 3D-SMART). 3D-SMART "locks" single target fluor
 ophores in the focal volume of an optical microscope using real-time feed
 back to move the sample and compensate for molecular diffusion at diffusi
 ve speeds up to 10 μm2/s. 3D-SMART serves to "untether" single-molecule s
 pectroscopy measurements\, dramatically expanding the application scope o
 f these measurements to solution-phase chemical processes. In the second 
 part of the talk\, we will discuss how we have advanced this tool to capt
 ure the earliest critical events in the viral infection process: penetrat
 ion of virions through the epithelial layer. When combined with a rapid v
 olumetric imaging method (3D Tracking and Imaging\, 3D-TrIm)\, we show th
 at active-feedback single-virus tracking can capture the previously unobs
 erved early events in the interactions between single viral particles and
  live cells. Critically\, this new method can propel single-virus trackin
 g from simple monolayer culture towards more tissue-like conditions by tr
 acking single virions in tightly packed epithelial cells\, leading to new
  insights into this earliest stage of the infectious cycle.

DESCRIPTION:Obstacles to effective teaching in higher education: Are we us
 ing the right change strategies? \n \nResearchers in undergraduate STEM e
 ducation have shown that many aspects of teaching can be systematically s
 tudied and improved using scientific methods. There is now a convincing b
 ody of research showing that a wide variety of instructional strategies c
 onsistently improve student learning and other desired outcomes when comp
 ared to traditional instruction. Like most fields\, though\, there is a s
 ubstantial gap between the research-based knowledge about effective teach
 ing and the actual practices of instructors. Change agents in higher educ
 ation typically attempt to bridge this gap by developing stronger evidenc
 e of the efficacy of new instructional strategies and telling more instru
 ctors about this evidence. In this presentation I will argue that this ty
 pe of change strategy\, focused on convincing individual instructors thro
 ugh rational arguments\, is not sufficient to bring about large-scale sus
 tainable change. Focusing only on individuals does not change the barrier
 s to implementing new instructional strategies that are embedded in the c
 ultures and structures within which these individuals work. Stronger chan
 ge strategies focus on supporting groups to develop and implement a share
 d vision.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Abs is a mathematical modeler who works at the intersectio
 n of eco-evolutionary theory\, functional ecology and ecosystem biogeoche
 mistry\, with an emphasis on microbe-mediated soil carbon-climate feedbac
 ks. They are interested in understanding where\, when and how microbial e
 co-evolutionary responses to global change can affect ecosystem-scale soi
 l carbon stocks and emissions. Dr. Abs received their PhD from the Ecole 
 Normale Superieure of Ulm in Paris and the University of Arizona\, where 
 they used game-theory based models to predict microbial eco-evolutionary 
 responses to environmental change (soil diffusion\, temperature) and cons
 equences for soil carbon. They are currently a Marie Curie Postdoctoral F
 ellow at UC Irvine studying how eco-evolutionary processes can affect mic
 robiomes' functional response to selection using individual-based models 
 of microbial litter decomposition. Starting in 2023\, they will pursue re
 search on integrating microbial emergent eco-evolutionary responses to dr
 ought into ecosystem models at the Laboratory for Sciences of Climate and
  Environment (LSCE) in Paris.

DESCRIPTION:As someone whose work is rooted in studying the demographic co
 ntrols of genetic variation and divergence within species and across comm
 unities of species\, my interest in speciation builds from this foundatio
 n. In today's talk I will argue for the importance of expanding the focus
  of speciation research to include not only a focus on the mechanistic ca
 uses of speciation (whether genetic or ecological) that determine the fat
 e of incipient divergences\, but also the opportunities for speciation - 
 that is\, the initiation and persistence of population divergence. I'll p
 resent an empirical example in which population persistence\, rather than
  chromosomal rearrangements\, may be key to understanding the controls on
  diversification in a tropical rodent. I then shift gears and present mod
 els we have/are developing for quantifying biodiversity while explicitly 
 accounting for the hierarchical process of speciation - namely\, the inci
 pient stages of divergence and the persistence of lineages we recognize a
 s species. I will touch upon the limitations of studying species lineages
  alone to quantify biodiversity. The works I present reflects recent call
 s for expanding the focus of speciation research. This includes a fundame
 ntal shift in that both species lineages and the incipient divergences (i
 .e.\, population isolation) within species lineages should be studied to 
 understand why species diversity varies across space\, time\, and among t
 axa.

DESCRIPTION:Among the environmental factors to which plants are subjected\
 , light is among the most mercurial\, fluctuating by orders of magnitude 
 each day. Plant ecologists tend to think of light mainly as an essential 
 resource for which plants compete. However\, light can also be a stressor
 : plants may suffer a form of oxidative damage known as photoinhibition w
 hen their leaves absorb more light than they can use or otherwise dissipa
 te. I discuss some of the unusual theoretical consequences of light's dua
 l role and illustrate them using three vignettes. First\, I elaborate on 
 the spectrum of adaptations that co-occurring plants have to avoid or tol
 erate excess light\, and I explore their consequences in experimental pla
 nt communities. Second\, I show how plants' varying tolerances to high li
 ght influence their interactions with each other\, tilting the balance be
 tween competition and facilitation. Third\, I call attention to autumn as
  a time when winter-deciduous trees are particularly vulnerable to photoi
 nhibition\, which may influence their ability to retain nutrients. These 
 vignettes reveal the avoidance of photoinhibition as a key component of p
 lants' broader functional strategies.

 istory and University of Chicago.\nAbstract: Animals go through a series 
 of predictable stages\, each with their own energetic constraints and str
 essors\, throughout the course of an annual cycle. But how do animals cop
 e or adjust their physiology during these periods and what are the conseq
 uences for health and disease? My research program takes an integrated ap
 proach towards understanding energetic-based trade-offs in flying vertebr
 ates. The three questions I will aim to answer during my talk are\, (1) w
 hat are the consequences of food unpredictability and workload on small p
 asserine bird physiology\, (2) are seasonal energetic constraints drivers
  of viral dynamics in fruit bats\, and (3) what are the health consequenc
 es of viral exposure in fruit bats? In birds\, I demonstrate that food un
 predictability and\, to a certain extent parental workload\, forces trade
 -offs between short-term survival (fat gain) and future infection and fit
 ness. In bats\, I find evidence that a combination of energetic demands (
 e.g. lactation\, dry season) and reproduction (e.g. hormonal shifts) are 
 likely the ecological drivers of viral recrudescence. Additionally\, in b
 ats\, there might be subtle morbidity effects associated with elevated nu
 mbers of past viral exposures. By utilizing both field and laboratory-bas
 ed studies to assess flying vertebrate physiological responses we can gai
 n insight into how animals will cope with ecological stressors which is e
 ssential in light of climate change and recent zoonotic spillover events.

 arth\, Environment & Society\nAbstract: Chemical communication is the ear
 liest form of communication. As such\, it is taxonomically widespread. Or
 ganisms as diverse as microbes and mammals send\, receive\, and respond t
 o chemical signals. However\, it is commonly believed that birds possess 
 a poor sense of smell and hence\, that chemical communication is unimport
 ant for them. In fact\, all bird species investigated to date have a full
 y functional olfactory system\, and birds use smell for everything from f
 ood location and predator avoidance to kin recognition. Preen oil secrete
 d from the uropygial gland\, located at the base of the tail in most bird
  species\, is a waxy secretion composed of a complex chemical mixture tha
 t contributes to avian body odour. I and others have identified numerous 
 factors that affect the chemical composition of preen oil and\, presumabl
 y\, avian body odour. In this talk\, I will present behavioural experimen
 ts I conducted to test the ability of songbirds to use preen oil odour to
  discriminate between the sexes and among potential mates with different 
 genotypes. I will also discuss mechanisms by which genotype may be commun
 icated via odour cues. Next\, I will describe my current research investi
 gating the role of chemical cues in the social and reproductive behaviour
  of joint-nesting birds\, including the potential role of symbiotic micro
 bes as contributors to avian body odour. Finally\, I will highlight some 
 of my future research plans.

 Homochirality"\n\nAbstract: The single chirality of the amino acids and s
 ugars that make up the building blocks of life has fascinated scientists 
 and laymen alike since Pasteur's first painstaking separation of the enan
 tiomorphic crystals of a tartrate salt over 150 years ago. In the past se
 veral decades\, a number of theoretical and experimental investigations h
 ave helped to delineate models for how one enantiomer might have come to 
 dominate over the other from what presumably was a racemic prebiotic worl
 d. Our work has highlighted mechanisms that include either chemical or ph
 ysical processes\, or a combination of both. While much of the scientific
  driving force for this work arises from an interest in understanding the
  origin of life\, research focusing on mechanisms for the enantioenrichme
 nt of chiral molecules has the potential to impact a wide range of applic
 ations\, most notably in the synthesis and formulation of pharmaceuticals

 e increase attributable to anthropogenic greenhouse gases to under 1.5C s
 eems unlikely\; even a 2.0C increase is most likely unavoidable in the ab

 e most important greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide and methane\, and pr
 oposals have been advanced to capture and store or destroy both at scales

 cience \n\nThe Department of Chemistry is excited to host Paul Walton (Un
 iversity of York\, UK)\n\nProfessor Walton is internationally known for h
 is work on equality issues in science.  His many distinctions in this are
 a include serving on the Irish HEA's review group into gender equality in
  Irish HE institutions\, the Athena Swan review group\, many internationa
 l keynote and plenary lectures\, the Royal Society's inaugural Athena Pri
 ze 2016 (runner up)\, and being shortlisted for the WISE campaign's Man o
 f the Year Award 2016.  Paul is currently a member of the Athena Swan rev
 iew group\, the University of Galway's equality advisory board\, and the 
 advisory board of the GENIE project\, Chalmers University\, Sweden.\n\nOv
 er nearly all scientific organisations\, across every country and across 
 time one finds that the progression of women in research/academia is sign
 ificantly hindered when compared to men.  Such a universal truth represen
 ts an enormous loss of talent\, including in our very own scientific comm
 unities.  \n\nRecent years have seen some progress in understanding the p
 rincipal factors behind this phenomenon and there has been some progress 
 in new schemes which are designed to address the lack of women in senior 
 scientific positions.  These schemes have also met with some resistance w
 hich\, in itself\, has been revealing of the reasons why there is such a 
 difference in the progression rates of men and women in science.  This pr
 esentation discusses some of the evidence behind gender equality\, and-mo
 st importantly-how that can be translated into day to day practice within
