DESCRIPTION:An anti-racist\, anti-imperialist\, anti-capitalist revolution
  must learn how to make its participants the authors of the terms of risk
  and the architects of the circulation and distribution of the value(s) i
 ts movements produce. Such control means securing the content of protest 
 and democratic-liberatory innovation for the protestors\, and not\, for e
 xample\, allowing efforts to make social change be reduced to mere conten
 t for sensationalist media platforms that secure the world in the hierarc
 hical terms dictated by today's fractal fascism. This essay builds on the
  notions of informatic labor\, informatic racism\, computational colonial
 ism and computational racial capitalism developed elsewhere in my recent 
 work to return for a moment to the cinema and\, with the ambivalent benef
 it of hindsight that comes from contemporary conditions of derivative liv
 ing in a fully financialized world\, explore its prior functions and futu
 re potentials as a derivative machine. We conclude with the question of d
 erivative communism: are there communist derivatives possible\, and if so

 emporary boom in films about sex work and other forms of feminized labor 
 in Latin America points to a crisis in how we understand and imagine work
 . This current crisis finds an unexpected precedent in Brazilian cinema o

DESCRIPTION:Since the late 1940s\, a specific set of tactics - intelligenc
 e gathered by small groups in which regular soldiers masqueraded as insur
 gents and insurgents who had come on side pretended to still be insurgent
 s - has been touted as a way to defeat a local insurgency that had outsma
 rted the plodding inefficiencies of conventional armies. Recent criticism
 s have argued that the success of counter-insurgency operations has had m
 ore to do with the self promotion of their commanders than anything that 
 happened on the ground. My argument\, for the Zimbabwe liberation struggl
 e in the late 1970s\, is counter-insurgency tactics are less about defeat
 ing an insurgency but are about how to negotiate the intimate spaces of r
 ace and culture.

  Prof of Anthropology at the University of Michigan\, is the author of "A
  Contested Caribbean Indigeneity\," an in-depth analysis of the debates s
 urrounding Taíno/Boricua activism in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean diaspo
 ra in New York City. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic research\, media an
 alysis\, and historical documents\, her book explores the varied experien
 ces and motivations of Taíno/Boricua activists and the alternative fonts 
 of authority they draw on to claim what is commonly considered an extinct
  ethnic category. It explores the historical and interactional challenges
  of claiming membership in what is an impossible affiliation for many Pue
 rto Ricans. In focusing on Taíno/Boricua activism\, Feliciano-Santos aims
  to identify a critical space from which to analyze and decolonize ethno-
 racial ideologies of Puerto Ricanness\, issues of class and education\, P
 uerto Rican nationalism and colonialism\, as well as essential questions 
 regarding narrative\, historical memory\, and belonging.

 any gynecological procedures are often not believed with reporting pain\,
  but other times are told to bear the pain. I argue that normalization of
  gynecological pain explains why some pain reports are viewed as credible

DESCRIPTION:While a number of metaphysicians working in fundamental ontolo
 gy agree that the ultimate grounds of physical objects must be some sort 
 of quantum soup\, they mostly avoid endorsing existence monism for the ob
 vious reason that it incurs the prohibitive onus of reconstructing the wo
 rld of everyday objects from scant material.  How could a maximally spars
 e ontology possibly yield rich enough structure to support manifest reali
 ty? \n \nIn their 2008 book Austere Realism\, Horgan and Potrč argue prov
 ocatively - but I think persuasively - for a version of existence monism 
 they call "blobjectivism". Though their arguments are driven primarily by
  semantics and logic\, they do address the above-mentioned objection conc
 erning physical structure because it is so frequently raised.  Their firs
 t-pass response\, which they admit requires scientific building-out\, is 
 to imagine a world made entirely of Jello\, emphasizing that one can neve
 rtheless identify a variety of relations and structures (e.g. color\, den
 sity\, etc.) within it.\n \nIn this talk I try to provide a scientific bu
 ilding-out of this response. In particular\, I argue that recent experime
 ntal work in quantum physics utilizing Page-Wootters devices to model a s
 tatic universe successfully demonstrates the emergence of complex dynamic
 al structure from a composite system with no dynamics of its own.  Theref
 ore let us embrace Jello world\, for it is indeed capable of supporting i
 nteresting objects... like submarines.

DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the 1950s\, Julian Schwinger laid the foun
 dation of quantum electrodynamics\, the quantum theory of light and matte
 r\, work for which he shared a Nobel Prize. Through the remainder of the 
 decade\, his intellectual influence on particle physics was difficult to 
 overstate\; physicists at CERN joked that reading The Physical Review\, o
 ne might think that all submissions in particle physics were required to 
 begin\, ``According to Schwinger...''. However\, by the late 1960s Schwin
 ger had broken away from mainstream particle theory\, and he spent the re
 maining 25 years of his career in increasing intellectual isolation. Why?
 \n\nIn this talk\, I will combine archival materials and unpublished lect
 ures with Schwinger's published work to flesh out a set of largely unseen
 \, but deeply held\, philosophical commitments that significantly influen
 ced Schwinger throughout his career. It is sometimes said that post-war A
 merican physicists outright rejected the mixing of philosophy and physics
  favored by their interwar European predecessors. Schwinger provides an i
 nteresting case of a more clandestine way that philosophical commitments 
 operated in postwar American physics.
