DESCRIPTION:Join Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús for a powerful discussion of her
new book\, which unearths the disturbing history and ongoing impact of "
excited delirium syndrome\," a fabricated medical diagnosis used to absol
ve police of responsibility in the deaths of mostly Black and Latiné men.
Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and historical research\, Beliso-De Je
sús exposes how this invented condition-rooted in racial eugenics and pio
neered by Miami medical examiner Charles Wetli-has been deployed to cloak
state violence in the guise of physiological failure and drug use. Throu
gh a decolonial approach\, dismantling the supposed neutrality of Western
medical and legal systems that perpetuate racial hierarchies under the g
uise of expertise\, Beliso-De Jesús blends ethnography and intimate journ
al entries\, fusing intellectual examination with critical reflection. Sh
e writes not only of data but of spirits-those of the dead who continue t
o haunt\, whose deaths demand justice. In braiding her own experiences wi
th Afro-Latiné spiritual traditions into the narrative\, she offers a for
m of resistance and healing\, one that transcends the Eurocentrism of Wes
tern rationalism. Excited Delirium stands as a powerful testament to the
ongoing struggle against the criminalization of Black and Brown people an
d the urgent need to confront the state's role in racialized violence.

DESCRIPTION:Anthropologist and mortician\, Ruth E. Toulson\, takes you beh
ind the scenes in a Singaporean funeral parlor.\n\nWhile multiple authors
have probed the corpse's power as a potent political symbol\, much of th
e existing literature on necropolitics has an exclusive focus on contexts
of violent regime change\, on the bodies of political leaders\, or of "t
he dead" understood as an undifferentiated mass.\n\nIn Singapore\, in con
trast\, Toulson argues that the manipulation of corpses is a quotidian st
rategy of political power\, part of the everyday actions of a stable stat
 e. What's more\, the corpses this state puts to its use are those of ordi
nary people\, whose unremarkable deaths are marked in what seem initially
to be unremarkable ways.\n\nThe embalmed body\, she argues\, is a partic
ularly fraught sites of the politic. But how this comes to be is a puzzle
\, for the state has little interest in legislating ritual or grief. Toul
son offers a new anthropology of death\, one both more personal and polit
 icized\, a necropolitics of the ordinary.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nRuth E.
Toulson is a sociocultural anthropologist whose research focuses on the d
ead body\, and death's material culture in Southeast and East Asia. Train
ed at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology\, University of Cambridg
e\, Toulson has a multi-sited collaborative international research agenda
that combines long-term ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth work in muse
um collections.\n\nProfessor Toulson's scholarship explores the intersect
ion of death and the state\, particularly in moments of sociopolitical tr
ansition. She probes this intersection by focusing particularly on the de
ad body as a form of highly politicized material culture. Her research pr
ogram has resulted in published work\, including a book\, "Necropolitics
of the Ordinary: Death and Grieving in Contemporary Singapore" (2025\, Un
iversity of Washington Press)\, and numerous book chapters and peer-revie
wed articles\, including in "Journal of Material Culture." She is an asso
ciate editor of the journal "Anthropology and Humanism."

DESCRIPTION:Drawing on fieldwork conducted in a gangxu development at the
urban periphery of east Nanjing from 2013 to 2015\, this talk argues that
the concept of "inflexible demand" works as an empty signifier bridging
divergent value-making projects that are constitutive of China's housing
market. It argues that gangxu is a hegemonic concept through which people
contest inclusion and exclusion in relation to the city in contemporary
China. The talk is developed from a new book titled "Anxious Homes: Infle
 xible Demand and China's Housing Market."\n\nAbout the speaker:\nMengqi W
ang is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Duke Kunshan University
(DKU). Her research focus is the intersection among economic anthropology
\, urban studies\, and critical infrastructure studies. She is especially
interested in how the home-as an object of attachment\, a condition of s
ocial reproduction\, and a residential property-mediate capital accumulat
ion and urban governance in contemporary China. Her teaching interests at
DKU include Cultural Anthropology\, Social Science\, and Cultures and So
cieties.\n\nShe is the author of an ethnographic monograph\, "Anxious Hom
es: Inflexible Demand and China's Housing Market" (Cornell University Pre
ss\, 2026)\, and has had papers published in leading academic journals in
cluding Urban Studies\, Positions: Asia Critique\, and the Journal of Cul
 tural Economy.
