nversations for Restorative Justice: Towards Anticolonial\, Anti-White Su
 premacist Anthropology Graduate Training \n\nMonday\, October 3\, 2022 \n
 1:30 - 3:00pm \nRoom 225\, Friedl Building \nIn person \n\nThis presentat
ion features racially minoritized anthropologists' stories about their ex
periences in US anthropology graduate training to illuminate how white su
premacist logics and emotions become a roadblock to establishing equitabl

hlighting how structural violence and everyday violence are intrinsically
intertwined and co-constitutive\, this presentation concludes with a dis
cussion about everyday equitable praxis that can help move out of the vic
ious cycle of structural everyday and everyday structural inequities in h
istorically white anthropology organizations. \n\nTakami Delisle is a cul
tural anthropologist with specializations in critical race studies\, crit
ical university studies\, and institutional ethnographic research. She ea
rned a PhD in anthropology and a graduate certificate in Gender and Women
's Studies from the University of Kentucky and is currently working on a
book project based on her dissertation\, "Breaking the Silence of Raciall
y Minoritzed Students: Structural and Everyday Injustice in US Anthropolo

gory? In what sense is it a historical phenomenon? How are its two compon
ents\, spontaneous judgment and a perception of form\, sutured by affect
into a distinctive experience? While drawing on philosophers to think abo
ut these questions\, we can also explore them by focusing on a distinctiv
ely capitalist aesthetic category: the extravagant and yet impoverished\,
simultaneously overperforming and underperforming\, fundamentally compro
mised gimmick.\n \nList of recommended readings by Sianne Ngai (in order
of importance): \n- Introduction\, Our Aesthetic Categories\n-"Theory of

of Attention in Contemporary Black Women's Writing \n\nTuesday\, February
  28\, 2023 \n1:30pm \nFriedl Building\, Room 225 \n\nThis talk considers
how U.S. Black women writers transfigured state-mediated forms of attenti

DESCRIPTION:Activist Affordances: Disability\, Shrinkage and Improvisation
\n\nFor people living with disability\, everyday tasks like lifting a g
lass or taking off clothes can be daunting. As such\, their undertakings
may require ingenuity\, effort\, carefulness\, and artfulness. In this ta
lk\, I draw on visual ethnographies with disabled people living in Turkey
and Quebec\, and trace the immense labour and creativity that it takes f
or them just to navigate the everyday. Bringing together theories of affo
 rdance\, performance\, and disability\, I propose "activist affordances"
as a way to name and recognize these extremely tiny and artful choreograp
hies that disabled people have to do each day for a more liveable world.
Activist affordances\, in the way I define them\, are micro\, often ephem
eral acts of world-building\, with which disabled people literally make u
p\, and at the same time make up for\, whatever affordances fail to mater
ialize in their environments. Activist affordances are not like any other
affordance in that their creation emerges from constraints\, losses and
precarity that I broadly conceptualize as "shrinkage". It is within a shr
inking world of possibilities\, that it becomes necessary to create affor
dances in their physical absence\, which is why I call them "activist". E
ven as an environment shrinks to a set of constraints rather than opportu
nities\, the improvisatory space of performance allows disabled people to
imagine that same environment otherwise through activist affordances\, p
resenting the potential for a more livable and accessible world.\n\nArsel
i Dokumaci (she/hers) is a Canada Research Chair in Critical Disability S
tudies and Media Technologies\, and an Associate Professor in the Departm
ent of Communication Studies at Concordia University. Her scholarly and c
reative work lies at the crossovers of disability studies\, performance s
tudies and medical anthropology. Arseli is the director of Access in the
making (AIM) Lab\, and the author of Activist Affordances: How Disabled P
eople Improvise More Livable Worlds (Duke UP\, 2023).

DESCRIPTION:March 28th at 5:30pm\n"Dangerous Constellations"\nFriedl 225\,
  East Campus\, Duke University\n \nRonald Mendoza-de Jesús's new book\, C
atastrophic Historicism: Reading Julia de de Burgos Dangerously (Fordham
UP\, 2023)\, unsettles the historicist constitution of Julia de Burgos (1
914-53)\, Puerto Rico's most iconic writer-a critical task that necessita
tes redefining the concept of historicism. While critiques of historicism
as a realism leave untouched the sovereignty of the historian\, Catastro
phic Historicism insists that reading the text of history requires an att
unement to danger-a modality that interrupts historicism by infusing the
past with a contingency that evades appropriation.\n \nMarch 29th at noon
(lunch to follow)\n"Glissant's Medusa: \nSovereign Cosmopoiesis and Unwo
 rldly Abjection"\nBlue Parlor\, East Campus\, Duke University \n \nBuild
ing on Rizvana Bradley's suggestion that the critical humanities has unde
rtaken a "turn to the world\," this talk argues that this turn is enabled
by an idealization of the concept of worlding that disavows the desire f
or sovereignty that structures the process of world-constitution\, howeve
r piously or altruistically the latter may be construed. To make this cas
e\, the talk will provide a rhetorical reading of Glissant's "La barque o
uverte" to show how Glissant's poetics of worlding otherwise generates th
e semblance of a "New World" of relationality and non-totalitarian unity-
in-diversity by obfuscating the structural role that the production and a
ppropriation of racialized/sexed abjection plays within cosmopoiesis.\n \
nThe seminar has one\, very short\, suggested pre-read: Éduoard Glissant'
s "La barque ouverte" or "The Open Boat" from Poetique de la Relation/Poe
tics of Relation. The French and English can be found here: https://duke

DESCRIPTION:Prof Janet Roitman\, RMIT University\, Australia\n \n"Finance
and the Global South"\n \nPlatform economies are depicted as the foundati
on of a new era of economic production. However\, different assumptions a
re made about the effects of digital platforms depending on geographic lo
cation. While digital platforms are approached as inherent to processes o
f financialization globally\, they are often reduced to processes of 'fin
ancial inclusion' when referencing the global South. Analyses of financia
lization as a one-way-vector-global North to global South-overlook variab
ility and responses to financialization. For instance\, a nexus of teleco
mmunication operators\, mobile money issuers\, and commercial banks in Af
rica generates instances of both value subjugation and autonomization\, e
vidence that the fault lines of value production are obscured by a North/
 South frame.\n \nProf Peter Geschiere\, University of Amsterdam\n \n"Witc
hcraft Logics and the Biometric State in Africa"\n \nSince the turn of th
e 21st century the World Bank has enthusiastically propagated biometric i
dentification as a solution to development travails in the global South.
The idea is that biometrics-machines that identify bodies-can work withou
t any social mediation and thus can evacuate corruption. Moreover\, with
the rapid spread of cell phones in the South\, biometric identifiers open
new possibilities for those who are non-literate. Some anthropologists r
emain skeptical about the real effects of this 'biometric cargo cult'. Mo
reover\, how does biometric identity relate to the resilience of ideas of
witchcraft in many parts of the continent? Basic to witchcraft imaginari
es is a vision of the person as double and shape-shifting. Such ideas wer
e creatively generative within the framework imposed by the 'documentary'
state (where the production of 'false' papers and double identities abou
nded). Will the 'biometric state' be more successful in overcoming such p
 luri-formity?

DESCRIPTION:Cultural Anthropology presents \n\nMatthew Rarey\n\nUnsettled
Maps: Cartography and Afro-Atlantic Religions in Brazil's Long Eighteenth
  Century\n\nMonday\, February 24\, 2025\n1:30pm\nFriedl Building\, Room 2
25\n\nIn this talk\, Matthew Francis Rarey meditates on the consistent\,
yet largely unexplored\, intersections between early modern colonial cart
ography and the development of Afro-Atlantic religious practices in Brazi
l's long eighteenth century. Looking to an amulet used in Brazil in 1744\
 ; a map of a maroon community from 1763\; a Brazilian atlas from 1817\; a
nd the longstanding incorporation of Indigenous spirits into Afro-Brazili
an spiritual systems\; Rarey explores metaphoric framings of Afro-Atlanti
c religions - and Blackness more broadly - not as diasporic ('off the map
' so to speak) but rather as rooted and settled in the Americas.\n\nMatth
ew Francis Rarey is Associate Professor and Chair of Art History at Oberl
in College. A theorist and historian of Black Atlantic visual culture\, h
is book Insignificant Things: Amulets and the Art of Survival in the Earl
 y Black Atlantic (Duke\, 2023) garnered multiple prizes\, including a 202
4 Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award from the Arts Council of the
African Studies Association and the 2024 Charles Rufus Morey Book Award
 from the College Art Association.

DESCRIPTION:About the talk:\n\nFrom the author of the pathbreaking "Situat
 ed Listening" (2016)\, "Remixing Wong Kar-wai" is a poetic\, wide-ranging
evocation of Wong Kar-wai's modus operandi. Dubbed once the "best ear in
the industry\," Wong Kar-wai crafts the soundtracks of his films by jett
isoning original scores in favor of commercial recordings.\n\n"Remixing W
ong Kar-wai" examines the combinatorial practice at the heart of Wong's c
inema to retheorize musical borrowing\, appropriation\, and repurposing i
n Hong Kong cinema and beyond.\n\nIn this book talk\, author Giorgio Bian
corosso will discuss the ways in which we can restore listening to the ce
nter of musicology-and oblivion to that of culture.\n\nIn connection with
this event\, APSI is co-sponsoring a free screening of Wong Kar-wai's In
the Mood for Love (2000) on February 14.\n\nScreening details: https://a
 sianpacific.duke.edu/event/film-screening-mood-love-wong-kar-wai-2000/\n\
nAbout the speaker:\n\nGiorgio Biancorosso's work investigates the bounda
ries of music and sound in the theater\, cinema and digital media. He is
the author of "Situated Listening: The Sound of Absorption in Classical C
inema" (Oxford\, 2016) and "Remixing Wong Kar Wai: Music\, Bricolage\, an
d the Aesthetics of Oblivion" (Duke\, 2024).\n\nBiancorosso is the co-fou
nder and co-editor of the journal SSS (Sound-Stage-Screen) and contributi
ng editor of "Scoring Italian Cinema: Patterns of Collaboration" (Routled
ge\, 2025). He is also active as a dramaturg and director. His staging of
"The Longest Days and the Shortest Days\," a tech-cantata by Eugene Birm
an\, was premiered at the Gulbenkian Auditorium (Lisbon) in 2022 and will
tour East Asia in 2026.\n\nBiancorosso is Professor of Music and inaugur
al director of the Society of Fellows at The University of Hong Kong. He
is currently 2024-25 Luce East Asia Fellow in Musicology at the National
Humanities Center\, N.C.\n\nnote: this talk has been rescheduled from its

DESCRIPTION:Join Aisha M. Beliso-De Jesús for a powerful discussion of her
new book\, which unearths the disturbing history and ongoing impact of "
excited delirium syndrome\," a fabricated medical diagnosis used to absol
ve police of responsibility in the deaths of mostly Black and Latiné men.
Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and historical research\, Beliso-De Je
sús exposes how this invented condition-rooted in racial eugenics and pio
neered by Miami medical examiner Charles Wetli-has been deployed to cloak
state violence in the guise of physiological failure and drug use. Throu
gh a decolonial approach\, dismantling the supposed neutrality of Western
medical and legal systems that perpetuate racial hierarchies under the g
uise of expertise\, Beliso-De Jesús blends ethnography and intimate journ
al entries\, fusing intellectual examination with critical reflection. Sh
e writes not only of data but of spirits-those of the dead who continue t
o haunt\, whose deaths demand justice. In braiding her own experiences wi
th Afro-Latiné spiritual traditions into the narrative\, she offers a for
m of resistance and healing\, one that transcends the Eurocentrism of Wes
tern rationalism. Excited Delirium stands as a powerful testament to the
ongoing struggle against the criminalization of Black and Brown people an
d the urgent need to confront the state's role in racialized violence.
