Gibson-Graham and others t o challenge representations of capitalism as a monolithic entity\, and in stead\, to make more visible the economic multiplicity that is all around us\, but we fail to see. Many scholars already understand that Chinese state capitalism diverges from Western liberal capitalism\, and even diff ers from the model of "East Asian Developmental State." Few have examined how pre-capitalist forms of economic practice are uneasily incorporated within Chinese state capitalist economy\, where they continue to operate according to non-capitalist or even anti-capitalist principles\, such as kinship ethics\, human-divine exchange\, divine and ritual debt-economies \, communal interests\, and rivalries of generosity\, even while they are also penetrated by capitalism. Based on fieldwork in rural and small-tow n Wenzhou on the coast of southeastern China\, I will examine what I call a "ritual economy" of religious and kinship expenditures that harken bac k to earlier pre-industrial commercial economies in imperial China. Today 's "ritual economy" traces back to the Song Dynasty\, when Chinese popula r religions and an indigenous market economy developed in tandem. This pa st extends its dynamic force to the present era of religious resurgence a nd China's entry into global capitalism. These populations are said to b e governed\, punished\, managed\, regulated\, and surveiled from above. I n this talk\, I reject this understanding of the state as a coherent inst itutional actor that simply implements policies at will. I argue instead that the political struggles of the urban poor can powerfully shape polic y outcomes. Drawing on 17 months of fieldwork in land occupations in Cape Town\, South Africa\, I examine several cases of mass eviction. Intuitiv ely we would expect occupiers on more valuable or visible land\, or else groups stigmatized by race or party affiliation to face eviction. But dur ing my fieldwork\, I watched a thousand Colored squatters get evicted fro m public land that was located in one of the poorest\, most invisible sec tions of a predominantly Colored township. Just up the road\, meanwhile\, I witnessed a 6000-person occupation gain the right to stay put\, despit e being located on privately owned land across a major road from a middle -class Colored neighborhood whose residents wanted these predominantly Bl ack residents removed. What explains this counterintuitive outcome? I arg ue that where residents formed a representative committee and coordinated a legal strategy\, they successfully secured their right to stay put. Key here is that B ukusu does not necessarily see such seemingly absorptive nocturnal activi ty as witchcraft. While the identities of nightrunners are protected by t he darkness of night nightrunners are categorically people that are known "in the light of day." The paper explores how such practices might facil itate a rethinking of social intimacy and trust\, in a context where libe ral and Christian discourses about good governance have proliferated and are structured in no small way by tropes of transparency and light. \n\nB io:\nRobert Blunt is an anthropologist and Associate Professor of Religio us Studies and Africana Studies at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. The book tells the story of how this particular col lection of mug shots came about and why\, how it was used and by whom\, h ow it acted in the world\, and how it came to be called the Terrorist alb um. The book also tells the story of how\, by looking at the album after the end of apartheid\, the individuals whose portraits were frozen within its covers have opened it up to new interpretations and meanings. The bo ok uses the album and associated objects (confidential police corresponde nce\, informer reports\, photographs\, secret memoranda) to examine the h istory of apartheid violence. It does not treat the album simply as evide nce of history but as an artifact-an object with a social life-whose own history is worthy of examination. I ask: as emergent communicat ive modalities\, what politics of visibility\, belonging\, and incorrigib ility do their performance practices acquire vis-a-vis competing/dominant /national representations of Latinx personhood? In pursuit of this very q uestion over the years\, my research has extended beyond the academy and into adjacent forums of publicly engaged scholarship\, cultural advocacy \, and work with high profile institutions like Smithsonian Folkways. In this talk\, Thomas will discu ss a range of multi-modal and curricular projects that have been geared t oward generating necessary but often difficult conversations\, and toward elaborating new foundations for sociality and liberation.\n \nDeborah A. Thomas is the R. Jean Brownlee Professor of Anthropology\, and the Direc tor of the Center for Experimental Ethnography at the University of Penns ylvania. She is the author of Political Life in the Wake of the Plantati on\, Exceptional Violence\, and Modern Blackness. This pres entation explores the echo as an expression of the "audiopolitics" of bla ck diasporic family life\, focusing specifically on rapper Earl Sweatshir t's music video/short film Nowhere\, Nobody (2019)\, an oblique meditatio n on the connections and disconnections of the black family's never-priva te history rendered in the video's asynchronous audiovisuality. \n\nLaure n McLeod Cramer is an Assistant Professor in the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. Such re-evaluations contest an d seek to dismantle the Anthropocene's seemingly incomplete histories. To this end\, the canonical work of Sylvia Wynter has proven to be useful a s it rethinks the contemporary world order and its appeals. In addition t o considering the importance of writing a history of "new forms of life" in the age of the Anthropocene\, this talk reflects on the extent to whic h Wynter's system theory can provide us with the critical means necessary to undertake a black critique of the Anthropocene. \n\nAxelle Karera is an assistant professor of philosophy at Emory University. She teaches and writes as the intersection of black critical theory and 20th century con tinental philosophy. This talk a sks why people who had experienced disaster refused things that should pr event it from happening again. Prof. Littlejohn argues that efforts to ha rden coastal edges can undermine the very objects-social worlds-they clai m to protect. Drawing on alternatives proposed by survivors\, he asks how we might "ecologize safety" instead.\n\nAbout the speaker: \nAndrew Litt lejohn is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Cultural Anthropolog y and Development Sociology of Leiden University. The core question motiv ating his current research is how to live more sustainably in a world dam aged not only by intensifying hazards but also the technologies we develo p to mitigate them. Hig hlighting how structural violence and everyday violence are intrinsically intertwined and co-constitutive\, this presentation concludes with a dis cussion about everyday equitable praxis that can help move out of the vic ious cycle of structural everyday and everyday structural inequities in h istorically white anthropology organizations. \n\nTakami Delisle is a cul tural anthropologist with specializations in critical race studies\, crit ical university studies\, and institutional ethnographic research. How are its two compon ents\, spontaneous judgment and a perception of form\, sutured by affect into a distinctive experience? Disc ussing the arts of attention in contemporary Black women's writing\, this talk shows how contemporary Black women's literature counters black wome n's hypervisuality with its tendencies toward obscurity\, inscrutability\ , and communal vigilance. \n\nErica R. Edwards is Professor of African Am erican Studies and English at Yale University. She is a scholar of Africa n American literature and culture and feminist studies. Her most recent b ook\, The Other Side of Terror: Black Women and the Culture of U.S. Empir e (NYU Press\, 2021)\, was awarded the John Hope Franklin Book Prize from the American Studies Association and was an honorable mention for the ML A's James Russell Lowell Prize. Her first book\, Charisma and the Fiction s of Black Leadership\, (University of Minnesota Press)\, was awarded the Modern Language Association's William Sanders Scarborough Prize. As such\, their undertakings may require ingenuity\, effort\, carefulness\, and artfulness. In this ta lk\, I draw on visual ethnographies with disabled people living in Turkey and Quebec\, and trace the immense labour and creativity that it takes f or them just to navigate the everyday. Bringing together theories of affo rdance\, performance\, and disability\, I propose "activist affordances" as a way to name and recognize these extremely tiny and artful choreograp hies that disabled people have to do each day for a more liveable world. Activist affordances\, in the way I define them\, are micro\, often ephem eral acts of world-building\, with which disabled people literally make u p\, and at the same time make up for\, whatever affordances fail to mater ialize in their environments. Activist affordances are not like any other affordance in that their creation emerges from constraints\, losses and precarity that I broadly conceptualize as "shrinkage". It is within a shr inking world of possibilities\, that it becomes necessary to create affor dances in their physical absence\, which is why I call them "activist". E ven as an environment shrinks to a set of constraints rather than opportu nities\, the improvisatory space of performance allows disabled people to imagine that same environment otherwise through activist affordances\, p resenting the potential for a more livable and accessible world.\n\nArsel i Dokumaci (she/hers) is a Canada Research Chair in Critical Disability S tudies and Media Technologies\, and an Associate Professor in the Departm ent of Communication Studies at Concordia University.
