She will include some of the projec ts that she is involved with that were either designed to support regulat ory development or are part of the enforcement of environmental regulatio ns.\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr.Frannie Nilsen is the lead Environmental Tox icologist at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality with experience in a wide range of environmental disciplines and a passion for environmental stewardship. Frannie started her career in toxicology with NOAA's marine mammal response program across the Hawaiian Islands. Her M aster's Degree involved researching the effects of plastic pollution on e ndangered seabirds in the North Pacific Ocean. Her doctoral work took her to South Carolina where she investigated the sublethal effects of mercur y exposure on alligators at the National Institute of Standard and Techno logy Hollings Marine Lab and the Medicinal University of South Carolina. When she came to North Carolina\, she joined the EPA to combine environme ntal exposures and genetic predisposition to determine children's health outcomes. Upon completing PhD research\, he began a postdoctora l fellowship at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill\, studying the i mpacts of aging on gut microbiota composition and host intestinal physiol ogy. Dr. Arnold transitioned from postdoctoral research in 2019 to take a position as technical director of UNC's Microbiome Core Facility\, where he was involved in developing novel techniques to answer challenging-to- answer questions within the microbiome space. During this time\, he also pursued research focused on studying mechanisms for modulation of host ph ysiology through microbial/microbiota-targeting interventions. In Novembe r 2022\, Dr. Arnold joined Duke Faculty as Assistant Professor in the Dep artment of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology\, and as Assistant Directo r of the Duke Microbiome Center. Many cities in our region are predicted to become uni nhabitable by the end of the century. In recognition of this pressing rea lity\, the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies and its Palestinian partners conduct regional environmental diplomatic activities\, academic research\, and initiate and execute projects throughout the Middle East.\ n\nThe need to equip national and regional policy makers\, diplomats\, co mmunity leaders\, security experts\, and health officials with the tools to deal with the growing risks of climate change is urgent. One of th e most extreme droughts on record is ongoing across the Amazon basin. The current drought is just part of a pattern of hydrologic extremes manifes ted over the past two decades by record droughts alternating with record floods\, a climate pattern with major implications for the forest\, its b iodiversity\, and human well-being. The cause(s) of the drought are uncer tain\, but anthropogenic global climate change is likely a major culprit. This colloquium brings together natural scientists who are experts on th e geology\, biology\, and climate of the Amazon. EFAN is an APSI initiative to en gage scholars interested in exploring how critical research practices can contribute to the collaborative effort to deepen understanding of shared environmental agendas and for pursuing a more sustainable and equitable world. The network emphasizes the essential interconnectedness of academi c disciplines\, research methodologies\, and regional knowledge.\n\nAbout the talk:\nHow can our pedagogies prepare those we teach for roles in th e wickedly complex\, power-riven scenarios of environmental harm that we research? I have leaned into this question for many years\, committed to responding to the environmental disasters I study through my role as an e ducator - seeing teaching as important a mode of scholarly communication as books and articles. \n\nIn this presentation\, I'll share what I've do ne and learned\, working with many different kinds of students\, drawing in theoretical insight from many directions (from Vygotsky and Winnicott to Freire\, Spivak and the many teachers I've taught alongside).\n\nI'll highlight ways students can be drawn into concern about environmental har m through thick\, underdetermined descriptions of how harms have unfolded in particular places\, and what can be learned from environmental data\, "data divergence\," and knowledge politics. I'll also highlight how EcoE d can give students a conceptual language and suite of tactics for enviro nmental sensemaking that can travel with them as they move into the every day work of environmental care. \n\nMost importantly\, I'll highlight the need to continually reboot and elaborate EcoEd in ways responsive to eme rgent environmental and political disasters\, and their tight imbrication s. This will take all of us\, so I'll end with a call for collaboration. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nKim Fortun is a Professor in the University of Ca lifornia Irvine (UCI) Department of Anthropology\, Director of UCI EcoGov Lab\, and member of AirUCI. Fortun's research and teaching focus on envir onmental risk and disaster\, experimental ethnographic methods and resear ch design\, and the poetics and politics of knowledge infrastructure. Harding will be available to meet informally with Duke students after the conversation (11-11:30 a.m.).\n\nAdvance registration is required for this event. \n\nMORE ABOUT HARDING\nHarding is president of Great Northern Str ategies\, a consulting firm that provides political insight\, strategic p lanning\, and policy expertise to non-governmental organizations and foun dation. Previously\, Harding was senior director for lands at the White H ouse Council on Environmental Quality\, where she coordinated Presidents Biden's conservation agenda that resulted in at lease 674 million acres o f land and water conserved. Prior to the Biden Administration\, Harding w orked for the National Geographic Society\, former Senators Tom Udall (D- NM) and Jon Tester (D-MT)\, the Obama Administration in the White House\, and at the Department of the Interior. She holds a master's degree in pu blic administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University and an undergraduate degree from Willamette University. Before graduate school\ , Harding was a vagabond who lived and traveled on every inhabited contin ent and worked as a raft guide\, backpacking guide\, and ski instructor i n the U.S. and Germany. In the summer of 2025\, General Brown joined Duke as an Executive in Residence with a joint appointment between the S anford School of Public Policy and the Pratt School of Engineering.
