DESCRIPTION:By the late 1950s\, the People's Republic of China (PRC) and R
epublic of China (ROC) stood as exemplars of success for both "revolution
ary" and "conservative" variants of the modern state. However\, in 1949\,
these two regimes had an overlooked yet substantial amount in common in
structure and state building agendas. Both were highly militarized Lenini
st single party states that needed to simultaneously create effective sta
te institutions\, dispatch political enemies\, establish the prerequisite
s for the modernization of the economy\, and mobilize support in areas wh
ere their connections to local society were weak to non-existent. Juxtapo
sing the PRC in Sunan (Southern Jiangsu) with the ROC in Taiwan illustrat
es that each relied on a mix of bureaucratic and campaign modalities to i
mplement policies deemed essential to state building - dispatching enemie
s of the state\, and implementing land reform. However\, public campaign
performance pointed to key differences in their core values\, self-repres
entation\, and attempts to generate legitimacy. In Sunan\, campaigns were
deployed in a highly public way that erased intermediary organizations\,
encouraged violent "high tides\," and required a mobilized public to emo
tionally merge with the state. Conversely\, Taiwan implemented and justif
ied campaigns in a manner that stressed law\, procedure\, and gradualist
technocracy. These modalities of policy implementation structured state b
uilding long after the early years of regime consolidation.

self in the big city of Edo (now Tokyo) in the decades before the arrival
of Commodore Perry and the fall of the shogunate. But as she was an unkn
own person\, finding out what happened to her is a difficult task. This t
alk focuses on how images and documents in the Japanese archive can be us
ed - carefully - to tell her story.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nAmy Stanley is
the Wayne V. Jones Research Professor of History at Northwestern Univers
ity. Primarily a social historian of early modern and modern Japan\, she
has special interests in global history\, women's and gender history\, an

DESCRIPTION:Duke students are invited to join the AMAR Lab and AADS at the
York room in Gray building on Thursday\, November the 3rd for a talk on
Chinese American religiosity.\n\nThis talk addresses the paradox of why C
hinese Americans are the most non-religious ethnic group in the United St
ates but still maintain devoted\, moral lives. Through the examination of
religious change in their traditions\, Dr. Jeung explains that Chinese A
mericans retain an ethno-religious outlook that differs from Western unde
rstandings but has adapted to the West.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us in welcoming Dr. Risa Kumamoto for a conversati
on co-hosted by the Center for Reconciliation and the Asian House of Stud
ies: "Gender Discrimination and the Liberation Movement of Buraku Women i
n Japan."\nRisa Kumamoto grew up in Fukuoka\, Japan. After graduating fro
m college\, she worked for an international human rights organization\, t
he International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism
(IMADR). She has served as a faculty member at Kindai University's Human
Rights Research Institute since 2002. Kumamoto earned her Ph.D. from Osak
a Prefecture University. In her thesis\, she explored how Buraku women ha
ve constructed or could construct their agency in search of liberation\,
even though both the\nBuraku liberation movement and the women's liberati
on movement have made them invisible. As she examined Buraku women's narr
atives and historical data of the Buraku liberation movement\, she publis
hed a book titled A Study of the Formation of Buraku Women's Agency. Her
current research focuses on the liberation movements of Buraku and Dalit
women as well as intersectional discrimination based on descent\, class\,
gender\, and sexuality. She has engaged in developing global networks am
ong women in Communities Discriminated against based on Work and Descent
(CDWD). Kumamoto serves as a community organizer for the Buraku communiti
es' welfare\, education\, and employment issues. She is also working with
teachers involved in human rights education to develop educational progr
ams for students who are sexually and racially minoritized.

DESCRIPTION:Few Chinese intellectuals and political reformers turned to Co
nfucianism and Communism for political inspiration at the end of the twen
tieth century. But the traditions have mounted remarkable comebacks in ma
inland China. What explains the return of Confucianism and Communism? And
what are the implications for Chinese academia and the political system?
  Drawing on his new book\, "The Dean of Shandong\," (Princeton\, 2023) --
"an inside view of Chinese academia and what it reveals about China's po
litical system" -- Daniel A. Bell will attempt to answer these questions.
\n\nAbout the speaker: Daniel A. Bell (貝淡寧) is Professor\, Chair of Polit
ical Theory with the Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong. He se
rved as Dean of the School of Political Science and Public Administration
at Shandong University (Qingdao) from 2017 to 2022. His books include "T
he Dean of Shandong" (2023)\, "Just Hierarchy" (co-authored with Wang Pei
\, 2020)\, "The China Model" (2015)\, "The Spirit of Cities" (co-authored
  with Avner de-Shalit\, 2012)\, "China's New Confucianism" (2008)\, "Beyo
nd Liberal Democracy" (2007)\, and "East Meets West" (2000)\, all publish
ed by Princeton University Press. He is also the author of "Communitarian
ism and Its Critics" (Oxford University Press\, 1993). He is founding edi
tor of the Princeton-China series (Princeton University Press) which tran
slates and publishes original and influential academic works from China.
His works have been translated in 23 languages. He has been interviewed i
n English\, Chinese\, and French. In 2018\, he was awarded the Huilin Pri
ze and was honored as a "Cultural Leader" by the World Economic Forum.\n\

DESCRIPTION:The Atomic Now: Aesthetics and Technopolitics in the Nuclear A
ge\nKeynote Speakers: Michaël Ferrier and Hikaru Fuji\nWith Tom Cinq-Mars
 \, Eric Disbro\, Hannah Holtzman\, Anne-Gaëlle Saliot\, Brigitte Stepanov
\n\nThe Atomic Now explores how the nuclear has shaped modern life\, at o
nce invisible and hyper-visible\, an existential threat and a cultural ob
session. The urgency of this inquiry is underscored by the 2024 Nobel Pea
ce Prize awarded to Nihon Hidankyo\, the Japanese hibakusha movement\, at
a moment many describe as a "nuclear renaissance": new energy projects a
re being launched\, nuclear escalation looms in Ukraine and the Middle Ea
st\, and atomic imagery resurfaces in global culture\, from Nolan's Oppen
heimer to the hit series Fallout. This project examines how the atom open
ed an era where scientific discovery and technological power irrevocably
altered humanity\, sparking artistic\, philosophical\, and political resp
onses. By bridging philosophy\, literature\, cinema\, visual art\, and en
vironmental critique\, The Atomic Now asks how the nuclear archive forces
us to rethink colonialism\, sovereignty\, and ecological futures.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Maya Soifer Irish's research focuses on religious violence
and toleration\, and investigates the legal\, social\, and economic situ
ation of religious minorities in Iberian Christian societies.\n\nShe is c
urrently working on a new book upon which this dialogue is based\, The Po
litics of Persecution in Medieval Spain: Toward the Anti-Jewish Riots of
1391. This work explores the path to the worst outbreak of anti-Jewish v
iolence on Iberian soil. As it examines Christians' treatment of the Jewi
sh community in Seville - the epicenter of the riots - in the decades pre
ceding the massacres\, the book shows that the persecution of Jews in med
ieval Castile evolved in local contexts: in towns and villages where loca
l authorities manipulated and fueled anti-Jewish grievances to pursue the
ir short-term political goals.\n\nDr. Irish's first book\, Jews and Chris
tians in Medieval Castile: Tradition\, Coexistence\, and Change\, was pub
lished in 2016 by The Catholic University of America Press. It explores
the changes in Jewish-Christian relations in the Iberian kingdom of Casti
le during the pivotal period of the "reconquest" and the hundred years th
at followed the end of its most active phase (eleventh to mid-fourteenth
century). Focusing especially on the Christian heartland north of the Du
ero River\, known as Old Castile\, the book offers a detailed investigati
on of the Jews' changing relations with the monarchy\, the church\, and t
he towns.\n\nHer articles have appeared in The Journal of Medieval Histor
 y\, Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies\, Medieval Encounters\, Sefarad\,
and many edited volumes. In 2019\, she held a Fellowship at the Frankel
Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies (University of Michigan). She has s
erved as President of the Fourteenth Century Society\, President of the A
merican Academy of Research Historians of Medieval Spain\, and President
 of the Texas Medieval Association.
