DESCRIPTION:The United States is making its largest infrastructure investm
ent in a generation through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill\, building
  out energy\, transportation\, telecommunication\, and water sanitation s
ystems across the country. Meanwhile\, internationally\, the G7 nations h
ave pledged $600 billion in public and private infrastructure investments
to address the global infrastructure gap for emerging markets and develo
ping economies.\n\nThis massive infrastructure build-out could play a sig
nificant role in advancing global decarbonization\, climate adaptation\,
and sustainable development-or in keeping the world on a business-as-usua
l trajectory. What will it take to direct these investments toward sustai
 nable\, resilient infrastructure?\n\nA public panel discussion (5-6:30 p.
 m. ET\, followed by reception) will address opportunities and key barrier
s to advancing climate-resilient\, sustainable infrastructure development
in the U.S. and abroad. Leaders from the private sector\, public sector\
, non-governmental organizations\, and academia will explore bottlenecks
to the adoption of sustainable\, resilient infrastructure and identify so
lutions to address these obstacles.\n\nJerome Lynch\, Vinik Dean of Duke
University's Pratt School of Engineering\, will moderate the panel\, whic
h will include insights from experts Motoko Aizawa (Independent Consultan
t)\, Anita van Breda (World Wildlife Fund)\, Todd Bridges (University of
Georgia)\, Roni Deitz (Arcadis)\, and Rowan Palmer (United Nations Enviro
nment Programme). \n\nThe panel discussion will be followed by an hourlon
g networking reception. All are welcome\; advance registration is require
d.\n\nABOUT: \n\nThis event is part of "Sustainable Infrastructure: A Duk
e Climate Collaboration Symposium" (March 20-22)\, which is organized by
Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Energy\, Environment & Sustainab
ility and Pratt School of Engineering in partnership with the United Nati
ons Environment Programme\, International Coalition for Sustainable Infra
structure\, and World Wildlife Fund.\n\nThe three-day symposium is the se
cond of the Duke Climate Collaboration Symposia\, a series of convenings
designed to accelerate climate solutions by developing new collaborations
among Duke scholars and external partners. The series is funded by a gif
t from The Duke Endowment in support of the Duke Climate Commitment\, whi
 ch unites the university's education\, research\, operations\, and public
service missions to address the climate crisis.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Duke Initiative for Science & Society in welco
ming Richard Sever to discuss his research in science communication. Trad
itional research publication is painfully slow thanks to lengthy editoria
l and peer review processes. Preprint servers like bioRxiv and medRxiv sp
eed up the sharing of science by decoupling dissemination of research fin
dings from their evaluation and other publishing roadblocks. Preprints pl
ayed a critical role in the pandemic by allowing scientists to share new
discoveries about and offer real-time feedback on both fundamental biolog
y and clinical medicine. They are at the forefront of a more open and inc
lusive publishing ecosystem.\n\nRichard Sever is Assistant Director of Co
ld Spring Harbor Laboratory Press in New York and co-founder of the prepr
int server bioRxiv. He is Executive Editor for the Cold Spring Harbor Per
