DESCRIPTION:Join the Kenan Institute for Ethics and host Adriane Lentz-Smi
th for a conversation with Jeffrey Baker and Damon Tweedy on race\, memor
y\, and what local history can teach us - as embodied in a story from Duk
e Hospital that still reverberates today.\n\nIn a new podcast\, "UNHEALED
 : A Story of Race\, Memory\, and a Teaching Hospital\," Damon Tweedy and
Jeffrey Baker revisit the largely forgotten story of a 24-year-old Army v
eteran named Maltheus Avery\, who died following a car accident on Decemb
er 1\,1950 - after he was turned away from Duke Hospital because of his r
ace. Reported around the country\, Avery's tragedy provoked national outr
age and inspired a medical civil rights campaign.\n\nIn conversation with
host Adriane Lentz-Smith\, Tweedy and Baker will explore the challenging
lessons we can learn from Avery's story and why those lessons still matt
er today.\n\nDamon Tweedy\, MD is a professor of Psychiatry at Duke Unive
rsity School of Medicine and staff physician at the Durham VA Health Care
System. His first book\, "Black Man in a White Coat\," was a New York Ti
mes best-seller and was selected by Time as one of the top ten nonfiction
books of 2015. He has also published articles about race\, medicine\, an
d mental health in medical journals and print publications\, including Th
e New York Times and The Washington Post. His most recent book is "Facing
the Unseen: The Struggle to Center Mental Health in Medicine."\n\nJeffre
y Baker\, MD\, PhD is a professor of Pediatrics and of the Practice of Hi
story\, and directs the Trent Center for Bioethics\, Humanities & History
of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. He has spoken to many
audiences on the history of racism in academic health centers and their
communities\, focusing on the example of Duke Hospital and Durham. He ser
ves on the board of the Museum of Durham History\, and in 2024-25 served
as chair of the President's Advisory Committee on Institutional History a
t Duke.\n\nThis event is part of the The Ethics of Now\, a series of conv
ersations between Duke historian Adriane Lentz-Smith and a range of artis
ts\, advocates\, and authors whose works explore the moral challenges of
our time.\n\nThis event takes place at the Hayti Heritage Center. A recep
 tion will follow the event.

DESCRIPTION:AGNOSTICOSTAL is a performance lecture in which Ashon Crawley
practices the breath\, the gestures\, the spiritual seriousness of Black
folks\, of Blackpentestalism\, of Black social life. "Shouting\," a chore
ography of praise and worship in the Blackpentecostal tradition\, will be
immortalized on canvas as Crawley paints with pigment powder\, acrylic p
 aint\, and ink using hand clapping\, foot stomping\, a tambourine\, and m
ovement of the body to visualize the intensity and fervor of spiritual pr
actices. With a live soundtrack provided by the sounds of the Hammond B-3
organ\, played by Charles "Chuddy" Smith\, vocals by Ashley Howard and t
he downbeat by drummer Rodney "Rod" Jones\, Crawley will engage a devotio
nal practice of praise and worship live for\, and with\, an audience.\n\n
This is the third and final public event of the 2024-25 Keohane Professor
ship with interdisciplinary artist and scholar Ashon Crawley.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Kenan Institute for Ethics and host Adriane Lentz-Smi
th for a conversation with Mike Wiley about how the arts can bridge the p
ast and present - and bring communities together.\n\nThrough performances
that bring the drama of American history to life - whether escapes from
slavery\, devastating acts of racial violence\, or civil rights struggles
and triumphs - actor and playwright Mike Wiley confronts audiences with
the persisting legacies of inequality in the United States. But by inviti
ng audiences to walk in the shoes of people very different from them\, he
also creates avenues for reconciliation.\n\nMike Wiley is a North Caroli
na-based actor\, playwright and director of multiple one-man documentary
dramas and full-cast ensemble plays\, including Changing Same: The Cold-B
looded Killing of Booker T. Spicely\; The Fire of Freedom\; Leaving Eden\
; The Parchman Hour\; Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till\; the theatrical a
daptation of Blood Done Sign My Name\; One Noble Journey\; and more. He h
as over twenty years of experience in providing documentary theatre for y
oung audiences and in schools across North Carolina in addition to his wo
rk in film\, television and regional theatre.\n\nMike Wiley is the Stephe
n and Janet Bear Assistant Research Professor of Arts\, Ethics\, and Educ
ation in the Program in Education at Duke University. He also co-directs
America's Hallowed Ground\, a project of the Kenan Institute for Ethics a
t Duke University that uses the arts to amplify and honor sites of past s
truggles significant to the American story\, particularly its history of
racial inequality.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. It takes
place at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham\, NC. Parking is available
on the premises\, at Phoenix Square\, Heritage Square Shopping Center\, a
nd on adjacent streets. Please write to Hillary Train at hillary.train@du
