DESCRIPTION:Many emerging new materials design tools and approaches are ma
king rational design of materials more feasible and powerful than ever. M
aterials Genome\, machine learning and AI-assisted designs\, are signific
antly expediting the materials design process and bringing many hidden op
tions to the table. Meanwhile\, the development of state-of-the-art chara
cterization techniques is allowing people to have more insightful look at
the crystal structure and microstructure of materials\, which leads to d
eeper understanding of the structure-property relationship of materials a
nd more effective materials design guidelines. \nChen group at Georgia Te
ch works at the nexus of computation\, material design\, synthesis and ad
vanced characterizations. We have developed a number of in situ character
ization platforms for different synthesis methods (e.g.\, solid state\, h
ydrothermal\, molten salt and electrochemical syntheses) and a variety of
operando characterizations for batteries and other electrochemical devic
es. With using lab or synchrotron X-ray sources\, in situ/operando XRD\,
PDF\, XAS can be performed to provide unprecedented information on the ph
ase/structure evolution of materials in their syntheses and their functio
ning processes in devices. We also closely collaborate with computational
material scientists to develop novel materials\, leveraging the power of
high-throughput first principles computations. Some of our recent resear
ch projects will be presented. (1) Understanding the nucleation and polym
orph selectivity of metal and alloy nanoparticles in solution with using
in situ XRD. (2) Design of phase-transition-free long-cycling cathode for
high energy Na-ion batteries. (3) Design of high-performance solid elect
rolytes for all-solid-state Li-ion batteries. Other ongoing research topi
cs such as recycling of spent batteries will also be briefly mentioned. \

DESCRIPTION:My research vision is that future humans will be more like rob
 ots (i.e.\, digital\, computational\, cyber\, augmented\, etc.) whereas r
obots will be more like humans (i.e.\, soft\, distributed sensation\, con
tinuous actuation\, artificial intelligence\, etc.). This talk will intro
duce my research on the mechanics\, materials\, bio-integration and funct
ionalities of soft electronics based on inorganic electronic materials su
ch as metals\, silicon\, carbon nanotubes (CNT)\, and graphene. In partic
 ular\, epidermal electronics\, a.k.a. e-tattoos\, represent a class of st
retchable circuits\, sensors\, and stimulators that are ultrathin\, ultra
soft\, and skin-conformable. My group has invented a dry and freeform "cu
t-and-paste" method for the rapid prototyping of multimodal\, wireless\,
or very large area e-tattoos that offer high-fidelity biometric sensing a
nd long-term wearability. While e-tattoos are for human wear\, e-skins ar
e to be put on robots for them to imitate human sensations. Despite decad
es of research\, soft capacitive pressure sensors still suffer from two b
ottlenecks - declined sensitivity with increasing pressure and coupled pr
essure-stretch responses. We therefore engineered a stretchable and ultra
sensitive e-skin based on hybrid piezoresistive and piezocapacitive respo
nses. It has enabled an inflatable smart finger with tunable shape and st
iffness that is suitable for a variety of tasks.\n\nHosted by Xiaoyue Ni

DESCRIPTION:The human hand is the pinnacle of dexterity - it has the abili
ty to powerfully grasp a wide range of object sizes and shapes as well as
delicately manipulate objects held within the fingertips. Current roboti
c and prosthetic systems\, however\, have only a fraction of that manual
dexterity. My group attempts to address this gap in three main ways: exam
ining the mechanics and design of effective hands\, studying biological h
and function as inspiration and performance benchmarking\, and developing
novel control approaches that accommodate task uncertainty. In terms of
hand design\, we strongly prioritize passive mechanics\, including incorp
orating adaptive underactuated transmissions and carefully tuned complian
ce\, and seek to maximize open-loop performance while minimizing complexi
ty. To motivate and benchmark our efforts\, we are examining human hand u
sage during daily activities as well as quantifying functional aspects su
ch as precision manipulation workspaces. \n\nHosted by Boyuan Chen

DESCRIPTION:Porous materials are usually thought of as amorphous mixtures
of two or more things\, solids\, fluids\, and voids. The research field s
tarted that way\, and so did my own activity in it. Along the way\, I was
drawn to the part of nature (the physics) that was missing from the amor
 phous view: the structure\, flow\, configuration\, drawing (design)\, pur
pose\, and evolution. The lecture is pictorial. It begins with defining t
he terms\, because words have meaning: vascular\, design\, evolution\, an
d prediction (theory). Next\, the lecture shows that vascular (tree shape
 d) architectures flow more easily than parallel channels with only one le
ngth scale (the wall to wall spacing). Transport across channels is facil
itated when the spacing is such that the channel flow length matches the
entrance (developing) length of the flow. The tendency to evolve with fre
edom toward flow configurations that provide greater access is universal
in nature\, bio\, and non-bio. This tendency is the Constructal Law\, whi
ch empowers us to predict the evolution toward flow access\, miniaturizat
ion\, high density of heat transfer\, and the scaling up (or down) of an
existing design.\nMultiscale vasculatures occur naturally because they fl
ow more easily than their counterparts with a few length scales. The futu
re of evolutionary design everywhere points toward vascular\, hierarchica
l flow architectures that will continue to morph with freedom and directi
 onality.\n\nHost: Xiaoyue Ni

DESCRIPTION:Shock wave / boundary layer interactions are an important feat
ure of high-speed flow that occur in supersonic and hypersonic aircraft i
nlets\, aircraft control surfaces\, missile base flows\, nozzles\, and ro
tating machinery. These interactions are often associated with severe bou
ndary layer separation\, which is highly unsteady\, and exhibits high flu
ctuating pressure and heat loads. The unsteady motions are characterized
by a wide range of frequencies\, including low-frequency motions that are
about two orders of magnitude lower than the integral-scale fluctuations
in the upstream boundary layer. The low-frequency motions are particular
ly problematic for aircraft structures as they can excite the high-amplit
ude vibration of thin panels\, which can lead to fatigue and failure. In
this seminar\, we will discuss experimental research on various types of
shock wave/boundary layer interactions that we have conducted over the pa
st 20 years. The discussion will focus on the use of high-speed PIV and p
ressure sensitive paint to investigate the physical mechanisms that drive
the separated flow unsteadiness in 2D and 3D interactions. \n\nDr. Noel

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nInflating a rubber balloon leads to a dramatic sha
pe change: a property that is exploited in the\ndesign of soft robots and
deployable structures. On the one hand\, fluid-driven actuators capable\
no.f complex motion can power highly adaptive and inherently safe soft ro
bots. On the other hand\,\ninflation can be used to transform seemingly f
lat shapes into shelters\, field hospitals\, and space\nmodules. In both
cases\, just like the simple balloon\, only one input is required to achi
 eve the\ndesired deformation. This simplicity\, however\, brings strict l
imitations: soft actuators are often\nr.estricted to unimodal and slow de
formation and deployable structures need a continuous supply\nof pressure
to remain upright. Here\, we embrace multistability as a paradigm to imp
rove the\nfunctionality of inflatable systems. In the first part of this
seminar\, I exploit snapping instabilities\ni.n spherical shells to decou
ple the input signal from the output deformation in soft actuators-a\nfun
ctionality that can be utilized to design a soft machine capable of jumpi
ng. In the second part\nof the seminar\, I draw inspiration from origami
to design multistable and inflatable structures at\nthe meter scale. Beca
use these deployable systems are multistable\, pressure can be disconnect
ed\nwhen they are fully expanded\, making them ideal candidates for appli
cations such as emergency\nsheltering and deep space exploration. Togethe
r\, these two projects highlight the potential of\nmultistability in enab
ling the design and fabrication across various scales of multi-form\, mul
ti-functional\, and multi-purpose materials and structures

DESCRIPTION:Power and energy systems are transiting from fossil-based syst
ems to systems with large amounts of renewable energy. Compared to the tr
aditional power system configuration\, future power systems will integrat
 e more renewable resources\, manageable loads\, energy storage systems\,
electric vehicles\, and other energy efficient technologies. These new te
chnologies will also bring more uncertainty and vulnerability to the powe
 r systems. Delivering reliable\, resilient\, clean\, and affordable power
and energy with large penetrations of renewable energy remains to be a c
hallenging problem. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied to tack
le these challenges by promoting power system decision intelligence. This
talk will mainly cover the research of applying artificial intelligence
to the sensing of the next generation energy systems: Meteorology-informe
d AI for Solar Sensing. We will demonstrate how to use deep learning\, co
mputer vision\, and sky camera to enhance solar visibility and predictabi
lity. This talk will also briefly introduce other research in learning-en
abled energy system modeling and optimization. At last\, this talk will b
riefly describe future research plan and services beyond research in this
  field.

DESCRIPTION:Many industrial processes are governed by the flow and deforma
tion of multiphase materials in which solid particles are dispersed or co
-exists with a fluid phase\, and therefore are referred to as structured
fluids. Examples can be found in many industries\, including food\, cosme
tics and pharmaceutical\, but most importantly they are critical for the
production and transport of energy materials. Examples include suspension
s of energy carriers\, printable slurries for coatings and batteries\, an
d slurries for mining of minerals and metals. Many natural materials invo
lved in environmental events also belong to the category of structured fl
uids: soil\, mud and snow are just a few examples. Structured fluids ofte
n display a complex mechanical behavior that is characterized by features
common to both fluids and solids\, with material properties that can cha
nge over time due to thermodynamic\, chemical or kinematic conditions. Ou
r limited understanding of the behavior of structured fluids can lead to
critical industrial challenges and prove environmentally disastrous\, as
in the case of clogged subsea pipelines or in landslides and avalanches.
Such problems call for immediate solutions to measure and model the mecha
nical behavior of structured fluids\, towards an improved understanding o
f this vast class of materials and corresponding processes and products.\
n\nMy research demonstrates that these challenges can be overcome by: (i)
introducing novel experimental tools and protocols that allow us to stud
y the mechanical and rheological response of structured fluids even when
their behavior is rapidly changing\, or mutating\, in time\; and (ii) rig
orously setting theoretical frameworks that explain the experimental obse
rvations. In this talk\, I will introduce an example of the integrated ex
perimental and theoretical framework that can successfully capture the co
mplex mechanical response of structured fluids. As I will demonstrate in
my talk\, this powerful approach not only improves our understanding\, bu
t also provides guidelines to develop superior materials for critical ene
 rgy and environmental challenges.

DESCRIPTION:The phenomenon of wall-bounded turbulent flow critically affec
ts the performance of many engineering transportation systems. For exampl
e\, the turbulent drag force acting on the ocean liners accounts for more
than 80% of the total energy expenditure. As such\, understanding the fu
ndamental wall-bounded turbulent flow and achieving turbulent drag reduct
ion have been a long-time pursuit for both scientists and engineers. Over
the past several decades\, although many promising drag reduction techni
ques have been developed (e.g.\, by employing a passive super-hydrophobic
surface)\, sustainable drag reduction remains a fundamental challenge. I
n this talk\, I will present a novel dynamic free-slip surface method tha
t can reduce the turbulent drag force by more than 40%. This method emplo
ys an array of air-water interfaces that are attached to the wall boundar
y\, and dynamically oscillates the free-slip interfaces at the desired fr
equency and amplitude. The dynamic free-slip surfaces substantially modif
y the momentum and energy transfer processes within the turbulent flow. T
he turbulent vorticity and shear motions were effectively lifted away fro
m the wall boundary and a counterintuitive local propulsion force (rather
than drag force) was generated. In addition\, as shown by an analysis of
the energy exchange process\, the turbulent flow in the regions close to
the wall boundary partially re-laminarized through an inversed energy ca
scade process. These physical observations all support the existence of a
  strong drag reduction effect.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: With an overhead of less than a single simulation\,
adjoint sensitivity provides the gradient of any circuit voltage or curre
nt or (error) function thereof with respect to every circuit parameter. I
n the time domain it does so by running both time and space backwards the
n convolving those results with the original to obtain the variations. In
that sense it resembles a "transparent AI." The gradient elements\, whic

DESCRIPTION:We live in an age where enormous amount of data is being colle
cted constantly because of smart phones\, ubiquitous presence of sensors
and the wide-spread use of social media. Useful and cost-effective analys
is of this data is the biggest economic driver for the IT industry. Such
analyses are often done in data centers or on cluster of machines because
they involve applying sophisticated algorithms to terabyte-size graphs\,
which are extremely irregular and sparse. We will show how low-power app
liances for such analyses can be built using flash storage and hardware a
ccelerators. Such appliances are likely to be 10X cheaper than 16-32 node
server clusters and will come in the form factor of an SSD to be plugged
into your laptop. \nArvind is the Head of Computer Science Faculty and t
he Charles and Jennifer Johnson Professor of Computer Science and Enginee
ring at MIT. Arvind's group\, in collaboration with Motorola\, built the
Monsoon dataflow machines and its associated software in the late eightie
 s. In 2000\, Arvind started Sandburst which was sold to Broadcom in 2006.
In 2003\, Arvind co-founded Bluespec Inc.\, an EDA company to produce a
set of tools for high-level synthesis. Arvind's current research focus is
to enable rapid development of embedded systems and designing complex di
gital chips with associated correctness proofs. Arvind is a Fellow of IEE
E and ACM\, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the A
merican Academy of Arts and Sciences.

DESCRIPTION:Deep learning has been the main driver behind the tremendous r
ecent achievements in machine learning and AI. One of the seeming paradox
es of deep learning is their uncanny ability to generalize to unseen data
\, even though they have orders of magnitude more parameters than the tra
ining data and can perfectly "interpolate" the training set. It is now be
ing recognized that this generalization ability is due to the implicit re
gularization that is inherent to the stochastic gradient descent (SGD) al
gorithms that are used to the train them and which allows one to find "go
od" interpolating solutions. In this talk\, we shall review these results
and further introduce a family of algorithms called stochastic mirror de
scent (SMD) which allows one to choose arbitrary (implicit and explicit)
convex regularizers. In particular\, we show that explicit regularization
yields far superior generalization performance over SGD on noisy data se
ts. We further show that\, with appropriate explicit regularizers\, it is
possible to significantly prune networks\, or to quantize each parameter
to a small number of bits\, without sacrificing appreciable performance.

DESCRIPTION:: Aerial Experimentation and Research Platform for Advanced W
ireless (AERPAW) is one of the four PAWR projects funded by the National
Science Foundation in the United States. AERPAW supports large-scale outd
oor advanced wireless experiments with autonomous unmanned aerial and gro
und vehicles (UAVs/UGVs) and it is remotely accessible by the nationwide
research community. Users of AERPAW have the opportunity to design and ra
pidly prototype next-generation wireless technologies\, systems\, and app
lications in both emulated and real-world environments. This talk will re
view the overall scope\, and existing outdoor infrastructure including ei
ght dedicated fixed nodes (towers\, rooftop nodes\, and a light pole) and
their capabilities\, as well as future plans for the AERPAW project. We
will describe various different experiment examples involving software-de
fined radios\, a commercial Ericsson 4G/5G network\, RF sensors from Keys
ight\, and a smart agriculture system with various LoRa gateways and sens
ors\, all of them interacting with autonomous UAVs and UGVs in a large-sc
ale outdoor environment. We will overview our digital twin that allows AE
RPAW users to exclusively design their outdoor experiments in a container
ized virtual environment. We will also provide various research examples
carried out on the platform since AERPAW declared general availability in
  November 2021.

nd Models: Promising opportunities for new applications at Terahertz Fre
quencies\, and deep learning for physical layer wireless communication ne
tworks and sensing"\n\nAbstract: This talk discusses radio propagation c
hannel characteristics and modeling approaches from below 6 GHz to the mi
llimeter wave and THz spectrum bands\, with a focus on recent discoveries
about the wireless channel above the millimeter wave spectrum. From rece
nt knowledge of the channel\, new applications and AI/ML opportunities be
come clear. The talk highlights advances in modeling the spatial and tem
poral nature of radio channels\, including the impact of antenna patterns
and received signal envelopes of received signals\, thereby offering ins
ights into phenomena that can be used in learning models for artificial i
ntelligence (AI) to predict signal behavior in real-world channels. Speci
al emphasis is given to the relatively new Two-Wave With Diffuse Power (T
WDP) distribution that encompasses Raleigh and Rician fading as special c
ases\, and repeatable measured phenomenon of diffraction effects when a r
eceiver encounters an object that physically begins to block a radio pat
 h. New approaches that learn the directions of arrivals and the extent of
multipath from simple narrowband envelope measurements\, and how to opti
mize and learn channel behaviors from ray tracing are also presented\, th
us offering insights into promising ML/AI approaches to physical layer pr
 ediction and learning.

DESCRIPTION:Recent radical evolution in distributed sensing\, computation\
, communication\, and actuation has fostered the emergence of cyber-physi
cal network systems. Regardless of the specific application\, one central
goal is to shape the network's collective behavior through the design of
admissible local decision-making algorithms. This is nontrivial due to v
arious challenges such as local connectivity\, system complexity and unce
rtainty\, limited information structure\, and the complex intertwined phy
sics and human interactions. \n In this talk\, I will present our recent
progress in formally advancing the systematic design of distributed coord
ination in network systems via harnessing special properties of the under
lying problems and systems. In particular\, we will present three example
s and discuss three types of properties\, i) how to exploit network struc
ture to ensure the performance of the local controllers\; ii) how to use
 the information and communication to develop distributed learning rules\;
iii) how to use domain-specific properties to further improve the effici
ency of the distributed control and learning algorithms. We will also dis
cuss challenges and issues arising from these solutions.

DESCRIPTION:Despite the strong capabilities of current surgical robots\, s
uch as high precision and dexterity\, they are predominantly fully contro
lled by surgeons during surgeries. Toward the goal of elevating surgical
robot autonomy\, the capability for real-time\, accurate 3D perception o
f complex surgical environments\, and the ability to understand surgical
procedures are critical enabling technologies. In this talk\, I will disc
uss a series of our works on developing robust perception frameworks that
can perform reconstruction and deformation tracking of surgical scenes\,
as well as track robot poses\, potentially allowing surgeons and robots
to better 'see' what's happening during surgery. I will also discuss how
we leverage these perception results to control robots for deformable obj
 ect manipulation.

DESCRIPTION:Robots must behave safely and reliably if we are to confidentl
y deploy them in the real world around humans. To complete tasks\, robots
must manage a complex\, interconnected autonomy stack of perception\, pl
anning\, and control software. While machine learning has unlocked the po
tential for full-stack end-to-end control in the real world\, these metho
ds can be catastrophically unreliable. In contrast\, model-based safety-c
ritical control provides rigorous guarantees\, but struggles to scale to
real systems\, where common assumptions\, e.g.\, perfect task specificati
on and perception\, break down. \n \nHowever\, we need not choose between
real-world utility and safety. By taking an end-to-end approach to safet
y-critical control that builds and leverages knowledge of where learned c
omponents can be trusted\, we can build practical yet rigorous algorithms
that can make real robots more reliable. I will first discuss how to mak
e task specification easier and safer by learning hard constraints from h
uman task demonstrations\, and how we can plan safely with these learned
 specifications despite uncertainty. Then\, given a task specification\, I
will discuss how we can reliably leverage learned dynamics and perceptio
n for planning and control by estimating where these learned models are a
 ccurate\, enabling probabilistic guarantees for end-to-end vision-based c
ontrol. Finally\, I will provide perspectives on open challenges and futu
re opportunities\, including robust perception-based hybrid control algor
ithms for reliable data-driven robotic manipulation and human-robot colla
 boration.

DESCRIPTION:Preventing injury and restoring mobility following injury\, bo
th musculoskeletal and neuromuscular\, is challenging. In recent years\,
the fields of biomechanics and clinical rehabilitation have informed the
development of wearable devices and assessment tools that aid in rehabili
tation and in maintaining mobility. Wearable exosystems are assistive dev
ices that can target weakness in a specific joint or muscle. However\, op
timizing these devices for performance across individuals\, tasks\, and e
nvironments\, and understanding their interaction with wearers across the
se different scenarios remains an active area of research. In this talk\,
I will discuss my work using exosystems\, along with principles from mot
or learning and biomechanics\, to deliver targeted robotic resistance tra
ining for gait recovery in people post-stroke. I will then discuss effort
s to move these systems into the real-world through data-driven estimatio
n of key biomechanical outcome measures. Finally\, I will conclude with h
ow these data-driven methods translate to other populations in the commun
ity to assess movement and prevent injury\, such as female athletes at-ri
sk of anterior cruciate ligament injury.

DESCRIPTION:Efficient and resilient coordination among autonomous agents p
lays an important role in various domains such as energy management\, rob
otic swarms\, autonomous vehicles and beyond. As these systems grow in co
mplexity and scale\, the challenge of achieving optimal coordination beco
mes increasingly difficult. The first part of the talk will focus on tack
ling scalability issues by leveraging network structure. I will discuss h
ow leveraging spatially-exponential decaying (SED) structures in networke
d systems enables scalable and near-optimal decentralized control. We wil
l show that under certain mild assumption\, the optimal controller also d
emonstrates a similar SED structure\, which leads to theoretical guarante
es for efficient distributed strategies and offers practical insights for
large-scale coordination. The second part of the talk will focus on effi
cient Nash equilibrium seeking for multi-agent systems. The key element g
uiding our approach is the concept of 'marginalized environment' which pr
ovides more flexible algorithm design and tractable theoretical analysis.
Building upon this notion\, we introduce a policy-gradient algorithm wit
h provable sample complexity guarantees. Lastly I will briefly present ou
r work on several applications such as green buildings and multi-robotics
and outline a roadmap for future work including closing the loop between
theory development and applications for AI-enabled multi-agent societal
 systems.
