DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the new realm of using threads as an ul
timate platform for flexible and stretchable bioelectronics. Threads offe
r unique advantages of universal availability\, low cost\, material diver
sity and simple textile-based processing. In this talk\, I will report re
el-to-reel fabrication to make functional smart threads for variety of se
nsing and electronics application. For example\, I will report on nanomat
erial-infused smart threads for sensing physical biomarkers (e.g. strain\
 , pressure\, temperature) and chemical biomarkers (pH\, glucose\, lactate
etc.) of health and wellbeing. Recent work on making electronic devices
such as transistors and integrated circuits on threads will be presented.
I will show our recent work on using this toolkit of thread-based microf
luidics\, sensors and electronics for applications as smart surgical sutu
res and flexible smart bandages for chronic wounds. Our recent work on us
ing threads for closed loop spatiotemporal dosage controlled drug deliver
y will also be presented. I will also present some research activities on
making colorimetric gas sensing threads for environmental monitoring\, a
nd strain sensing threads for a wide variety of physical activity monitor
ing platforms. If time permits\, I will provide a brief overview of other
  research activities in my group.

DESCRIPTION:Vascular access is a critical step for almost any clinical int
ervention or diagnosis\, and inserting an intravenous cannula (IV) is one
of the most common medical procedures performed. In the US\, this proced
ure happens over 2.7 million times daily. A key challenge of effective an
d safe vascular access\, especially in resource limited settings\, is the
availability of trained providers who can perform the procedure reliably
. This challenge along with inherent inaccuracy due to manual nature of t
he current procedure could be alleviated using autonomous robotic venipun
cture. This talk will discuss the various challenges in this line of rese
arch\, from choice of sensors to how the system would work or even be use
ful in settings such as remote medicine to a crowded ER. There will also
be a brief discussion on the non-technical barriers of getting medical de
vices into practice from regulatory practices to the reality of reimburse
ment for those interested in medical device entrepreneurship.

DESCRIPTION:Globally\, 4.5 billion people lack access to safely managed sa
nitation systems. To address this crisis\, the Bill and Melinda Gates Fou
ndation launched the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge - a call to engineers
to develop affordable and innovative sanitation solutions that can operat
e without connections to water\, sewer\, and electricity. One of these so
lutions\, the Reclaimer\, was developed by the Duke University Center for
WaSH-AID.\n\nCurrently\, the Reclaimer is capable of running without con
nections to water or sewer but does require an external power source. To
ensure the Reclaimer is available to those that lack access to a reliable
power source\, it must operate off-grid. The need for successful off-gri
d operation spurred the completion of an energy demand reduction analysis
. In addition to the sanitation crisis\, this presentation will detail bo
th the Reclaimer technology and the thermodynamic analyses that have been
completed to reduce the Reclaimer's energy requirements.

DESCRIPTION:Pursuing a PhD degree is\, for many people\, a life-changing c
areer decision. It is a 4-6 year commitment you make to yourself and your
advisor\, even though the future is full of uncertainty and a lot ups an
d downs. Everyone loves successful experiments and publications\, but one
can also have self-doubt and ask: what is the meaning of getting a PhD?
is it really worth it? Will I ever get a decent job after this? Just like
every career choice question\, there is no correct or standard answer to
these questions. Nevertheless\, in this informal talk\, I will talk abou
t my personal reflection on the reasons of getting PhD\, many of which we
re not exactly clear when I was a graduate student. As junior faculty who
just changed the academic status\, I will also talk about the difference
in mindsets and expectation between students and advisors\, in the hope
that\, through mutual understanding\, every student can maintain a good r
elationship with the advisors and thrive in their PhD careers.

DESCRIPTION:If you want to be an engineer and/or use engineering principle
s in your research\, then everything you would do is\, by definition\, en
capsulated in "Materials Engineering Design Methodology". In order to lea
rn what is\, and how to use\, "Materials Engineering Design" I have taken
a new approach to educating engineers and other scientists. We Reverse
 Engineer problems "X" solved\, where "X" could be nature\, engineers\, or
a range of professions that have solved problems using various device-ba
sed solutions. Why do we reverse engineer problems that have already bee
n solved? Because they were not solved by you and because we know all th
e answers. The result is that when you go through this reverse engineeri
ng process you become an inventor and innovator yourself. Reverse engine
ering is an invention and innovation generator\, which to me is the goal
of all education\, for you to be stimulated to have your own ideas.

DESCRIPTION:Computer simulations based on electronic structure theory\, pa
 rticularly Kohn-Sham density-functional theory (KS-DFT)\, are facilitatin
g scientific discoveries across a broad range of disciplines such as chem
istry\, physics\, and materials science. Despite its remarkable success\,
the application of KS-DFT to systems consisting of thousands of atoms is
still difficult. The major computational bottleneck is an eigenvalue pro
blem\, whose direct solution scales cubically with respect to the problem
size. To overcome this bottleneck\, researchers and software developers
are actively working on improving the performance of eigensolvers and dev
eloping alternative algorithms that circumvent the explicit solution of t
he eigenproblem. In this talk\, we present ELSI\, an open-source software
infrastructure aiming to facilitate large-scale electronic structure cal
culations. ELSI features a unified programming interface that connects el
ectronic structure codes to a variety of high-performance solvers. The ef
ficiency and scalability of these solvers are demonstrated by a set of be
 nchmarks performed on world-leading supercomputers.
