DESCRIPTION:The spring DITE meeting will take place at the JB Duke Hotel o
n Thursday\, February 22nd- Saturday\, February 24th\, 2018. Select DIT
E fellows will present their research at the Duke University Economics De
partment on Friday February 23rd from 9:00 am- 12:00 pm. \n\nThe Diversit
y Initiative for Tenure in Economics (DITE)\, funded by the National Scie
nce Foundation\, is a research mentoring workshop that seeks to facilita
te successful transition from junior faculty status to tenured associate
professor for economists from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (
especially blacks\, Latinos\, and native Americans). The gross underrepre
sentation of economists from these groups in the ranks of university facu
lty\, particularly in economics departments\, creates an imperative for s
pecial efforts to ensure that junior faculty from these groups develop th
e research and teaching profile that will lead to promotion to tenure. DI
TE is the only program designed specifically to increase the representati
on of black\, Latino and native American economists in tenured faculty po
sitions at colleges and universities throughout the United States via men
toring of junior faculty focused on research and teaching.

DESCRIPTION:Across the U.S.\, organizations and communities are grappling
with increases in the cost of health care. Employers are concerned about
their employees' health care costs. Health care providers are experimenti
ng with new modes of care delivery that could help drive down cost. Some
patients are rationing their medication and delaying treatment to reduce
their out-of-pocket spending. Inequities in access to primary care increa
se the incidences of catastrophic care\, especially among low-income comm
unities. Compared to other developed economies\, the U.S. leads in health
care spending but falls squarely in the middle in health care outcomes.
At the same time\, emerging economies\, faced with a population boom and
a rising middle class\, are urgently investing in modern health care syst
ems.\n\nAt the 2019 Health Care Conference\, we will discuss how various
entities are tackling the rise in health care costs. We will have keynote
speakers\, panels\, and ample networking opportunities during breakfast\
, lunch\, and a closing reception.\n\nThe Conference is a full-day event
that will be held at the JB Duke Hotel in Durham\, North Carolina on Nove
mber 6\, 2019 for 200 expected attendees from Fuqua\, Duke University\, n
earby academic and healthcare institutions\, and healthcare companies in
the Triangle.

ism is the oldest hatred\, commonplace across the Middle East and on the
rise for years in Europe. So that terrible morning in Pittsburgh raised a
question Americans can no longer avoid: Could it happen here?\n\nNo long
er the exclusive province of the far right\, the far left\, and assorted
religious bigots\, anti-Semitism now finds a home in identity politics an
d the reaction against identity politics\, in the renewal of America Firs
t isolationism and the rise of one-world socialism\, and in the spread of
Islamist ideas into unlikely places. A hatred that was\, until recently\
, reliably taboo\, anti-Semitism is migrating toward the mainstream\, amp
lified by social media and a culture of conspiracy that threatens us all.
\n\nFrom 2017 until 2020\, Bari Weiss was a staff writer and editor for t
he Opinion section of The New York Times. Before joining the Times\, Ms.
Weiss was an op-ed editor at the Wall Street Journal and an associate boo
k review editor there. For two years\, she was a senior editor at Tablet\
, the online magazine of Jewish news\, politics\, and culture\, where she
edited the site's political and news coverage. She regularly appears on
shows like The View\, Morning Joe and Real Time with Bill Maher.\n\nMs. W
eiss is a proud Pittsburgh native and a graduate of Columbia University.
She is the winner of the Reason Foundation's 2018 Bastiat Prize\, which a
nnually honors writing that "best demonstrates the importance of freedom
with originality\, wit\, and eloquence."\n\nA limited reception and book
signing will follow this event.
