DESCRIPTION:With authors Patricia Costas\, Javier Zárate\, Jorge Derpic\,
and Cecilia Barja. In their book "Memorias de Nuestra Democracia\, los 40
años del 10 de Octubre" (Colectivo Fogoneros 2022)they reflect on the de
mocratic transition in the South American country forty years after its c
onsolidation. On October 10\, 1982\, after almost two decades of dictator
ship\, Bolivia recovered its democracy. From that moment on\, despite the
ongoing economic\, political\, and social crises\, Bolivia maintained it
s democratic system for almost 40 years. This book and the authors commem
orate 40 years of democratic life in Bolivia\, and review and discuss the
advances\, setbacks\, and changes that have occurred in the last four de
cades.\n \nA brief summary about the Fogoneros Group: Starting in August
2021\, a group of Bolivians who live in the country and abroad meet every
two weeks via zoom to talk about the uneasiness generated by the situati
on in Bolivia\, to break the silence\, and regain hope. They gather to ki
ndle the wood before the fire goes out.\n\nTheir purpose is to reflect on
what democracy is\, from different perspectives\, with nuances that avoi
d homogenization and simplification. The challenge of this initiative\, l
ike democracy itself in Bolivia\, is to be a diverse and genuine space\,
tolerant and collaborative\, that grows from the tension of difference\,
not despite it. They aspire to create a multigenerational\, multidiscipli
 nary\, territorial\, creative\, and broad ideological space.

DESCRIPTION:Talk begins in John Hope Franklin Center Gallery (1st floor)\,
lunch served in FC 130.\n\n"Peruvian American artist Renzo Ortega is usi
ng as support for his work in this series\, Llanchama. Llanchama (or Yanc
hama) is a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the
Amazon. Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is co
nsidered a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to mak
e textiles in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of m
aterial culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Le
cythis Pisonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the for
est. Llanchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diape
 rs (for babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, arts and crafts\, etc.\n\nOr
tega got the llanchama for this series from a well know Amazonian artist
(painter) Brus Rubio Churay (Bora-Uitoto) as a "Gift\," back in 2016. Rub
io Churay was in Washington DC as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festiv
al where Ortega was his interpreter and liaison. Rubio Churay's work has
gained international recognition for the profound description of tribal l
ife in contemporary times\, in both the daily management of the jungle en
vironment and the collective tribal experience that presents itself in th
e form of dreams\, visions\, and legends.\n\nCan we consider this series
patrimony? A form of cultural heritage from which to build? This is the q
uestion Ortega brings up when reflecting on the material and the represen
tation of these pieces. His work functions as a critical reminder of mest
izaje and miscegenation in art and culture\, then a better term applied t
o this approach would be that of regeneration."

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Luz Angela Rodríguez Ramirez\, who earned her PhD at Duke\
, will join us remotely for a talk on Environmental Conflicts and Rural S
ocieties. She will join CLACS in the fall as a Mellon Visiting Professor
at Duke. Currently\, she is an assistant professor at Pontificia Universi
dad Javeriana in Bogotá\, Colombia.\n\nLatin America plays a central role
in the provision of environmental services at a global scale. For instan
ce\, the Amazon biome extends over an area of 6.7 millions of square kilo
meters\, that belongs to nine countries and corresponds both to the large
r humid forest in the world and the largest agricultural frontier. Differ
ent processes of accelerated environmental change are taking place in the
continent which are rooted in economic and political drivers that are co
ntested by rural and urban communities who frame their claims in an envir
onmental justice language. Using the lens of the environmental justice fr
amework we will explore cases of environmental conflicts in Latin America
\, their actors and the sectors involved and the implications of large sc
ale development projects for local livelihoods' sustainability.
