Llanchama is a natural textile used by multiple indigenous communities of the Amazon. Because of its origin\, it does not need to be waived\, it is considered a "Gift" from mother nature\, and also a way to teach how to make textil es in situated contexts. It is widely used in the production of material culture. It comes directly from the great sapucaia inner bark (Lecythis P isonis)\, that peels naturally due to its rapid growth in the forest. Lla nchama is used as material for ritual garments\, blankets\, diapers (for babies)\, baskets\, sifters\, nets\, etc.\n\nOrtega argues about this ser ies of drawing Interventions on llanchama\, "The Patrimony series respond s to the global evil of heritage destruction\, the physical destruction o f objects from the past\, and the conceptual destruction of people's thou ghts and cultural contributions in the present. These drawings are an act of shaping and destroying. A sudden change is generated not by the weath er or the erosion\; humanity is the one who killed history. Beyond the fo rmal elements of drawing\, the physical process of these works creates an imprint that resists and adapts to intentional manipulation. The intention is to create a psychogeographic map that captures the essen ce of contemporary Filipino indigenous and diasporic identities-within th is temporal expanse\, shared memories and collective experiences meld\, f orming the foundation of their shared identity.\n\nEmerging from the Hila -bana street art movement that started in 2018 in Baguio City\, Philippin es\, "Hila-bana" is rooted in the Tagalog term "hilbanahan\," meaning tem porary stitching. It embodies the symbiotic journey of individuals of div erse ethnicities. The pulang sinulid\, or red thread\, analogous to the D NA that runs through our veins\, becomes a vital strand intertwining with our indigenous traditions\, echoing the threads that course through the heart of our ancestral heritage. Across lived spaces\, the subjects weave tales of cultural exchange\, their footprints retracing the rhythm of ur banity and the ever-evolving movement of its inhabitants.\n\nEvent schedu le:\n4-5pm: View artist work & live music featuring West Oxking\n\n5-5:30 pm: Dr. Anna Storti will briefly introduce Venazir Martinez\, followed by an artist talk and Q & A.\n\nLight refreshments will be provided.\n\nThe exhibition will remain on display in the Gallery at the John Hope Frankl in Center through the end of October 2023.\n\nAbout the artist:\nVenazir Martinez (www.venazir.com/) is a Filipino visual anthropreneur\, and a st reet muralist. It suggests\, as well\, that a full reckoning with the history of anti-Asian violence must go beyond acts by racist individuals to analyze state violence.\n\nT his particular collection also pushes us beyond simple narratives of oppr ession and resistance. There are more stories that lie behind the images of Bong Jae Jang\, Miné Okubo\, the Miss Saigon protest\, the struggle fo r bilingual education\, and the many other treasures that are part of thi s exhibit. Thanks to Corky Lee's tireless efforts to document our lives\, we have these snapshots that are more than snapshots. They are vistas on to Asian American history\, which turns out to be far more interesting\, vital\, and complex\, than we imagined.\n\nIntroduction by Calvin Cheung- Miaw\, Andrew W. Ngai is the Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies and professor of h istory at Columbia. She is author of the award winning books\, Impossible Subjects (2004)\, The Lucky Ones (2010)\, and The Chinese Question (2021 )\, and is editor of the new retrospective book of the late Corky Lee's p hotography (2024).
