 sistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine\
 , Division of Experimental Pathology at Weill Cornell University. Steven 
 has appointments in the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis (IMP) Progr
 am and the Physiology\, Biophysics\, and Systems Biology (PBSB) Program. 
 After a BA from UC Berkeley and three years as a research tech working in
  the area of human immunology and HIV at UCSF\, Steve conducted his gradu
 ate work with Alexander Rudensky at the University of Washington and Memo
 rial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His PhD work focused on mechanisms of
  immune tolerance and the differentiation and function of regulatory T ce
 lls-- how our powerful immune systems can so effectively combat pathogens
  while tolerating our own tissues\, food\, and commensal microbiota. He t
 hen joined the laboratory of C. David Allis at The Rockefeller University
  to study epigenetic mechanisms underlying cellular differentiation and s
 timulation events in the immune system. Joining Weill Cornell Medicine in
  May 2017\, ongoing work in his lab combines the fields of epigenetics an
 d immunology to focus on questions of epigenetic regulation of transcript
 ion\, especially as it pertains to rapid cellular responses\, namely immu
 ne cell responses to stimulatory cues. The goal is to reveal fundamental 
 epigenetic mechanisms regulating inflammation and their activity in pedia
 tric and adult inflammatory disease.

 +++\n\nThe Hunter laboratory has several areas of research that center ar
 ound understanding how the immune system deals with T. gondii. The first 
 focuses on host pathogen interactions at the cellular level and how the p
 arasite interacts with intracellular signaling pathways (NF-kB/JAK-STAT).
  In collaboration with the Roos laboratory\, genetic approaches are being
  used to identify parasite factors that are involved in these events. Thi
 s is part of work in progress which has used transgenic parasites to addr
 ess fundamental questions about which cells are important in the initiati
 on of adaptive immunity and the role of cross-presentation in the develop
 ment of T cell responses. These latter studies compliment the work in the
  laboratory that has helped to define the cytokine networks that regulate
  the balance between protective and pathological immune responses and cur
 rent studies focus on the IL-6 family of cytokines in these events. Lastl
 y the laboratory is interested in better understanding the pathogenesis o
 f toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) in the immunocompromised patients who dev
 elop this disease. This work has also led the laboratory to try and apply
  what we have learned in TE to better understand the neuro-pathogenesis o
 f African sleeping sickness.

 n+++++++++\n\nDr. Flavell is Sterling Professor of Immunobiology at Yale 
 University School of Medicine\, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes 
 Medical Institute. He received his B.Sc. (Honors) in 1967 and Ph.D. in 19
 70 in biochemistry from the University of Hull\, England\, and performed 
 postdoctoral work in Amsterdam (1970-72) with Piet Borst and in Zurich (1
 972-73) with Charles Weissmann. Before accepting his current position in 
 1988\, Dr. Flavell was first Assistant Professor (equivalent) at the Univ
 ersity of Amsterdam (1974-79)\; then Head of the Laboratory of Gene Struc
 ture and Expression at the National Institute for Medical Research\, Mill
  Hill\, London (1979-82)\; and subsequently President and Chief Scientifi
 c Officer of Biogen Research Corporation\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts (198
 2-88). Dr. Flavell is a fellow of the Royal Society\, a member of the Nat
 ional Academy of Sciences as well as the National Academy of Medicine. Ri
 chard Flavell uses transgenic and gene-targeted mice to study Innate and 
 Adaptive immunity\, T cell tolerance and activation in immunity and autoi
 mmunity\,apoptosis\, and regulation of T cell differentiation.\n\n+++++++
 ++\n\n\nThe D. Bernard Amos Research Lecture is supported by the D. Berna
 rd Amos Fellowship Endowment. The lecture was established by the Departme
 nt of Immunology to honor his memory and recognize his many contributions

 undergraduate studies in Microbiology at the University of Notre Dame (B.
 S.\, cum laude\, 1987). She performed her graduate work with Dr. Ronald B
 . Corley in the Department of Microbiology at Duke University. She obtain
 ed her Ph.D. in Immunology in 1992 and went on to a post-doctoral immunol
 ogy fellowship in Dr. Maureen Howard's group at DNAX Research Institute i
 n Palo Alto\, CA. In 1997 she moved to the Trudeau Institute\, a basic bi
 omedical infectious disease research institute\, and started her own rese
 arch lab. Over the next 11 years\, Dr. Lund and her scientific partner\, 
 Dr. Troy Randall\, developed research programs studying humoral and cellu
 lar immune responses to pulmonary and intestinal pathogens. In 2008\, the
 y joined the University of Rochester as Professors within the Division of
  Allergy\, Immunology and Rheumatology (Department of Medicine). Over the
  next four years\, Dr. Lund developed additional research programs in aut
 oimmunity and allergy and began her work in human translational immunolog
 y. In 2012\, Drs. Lund and Randall and their joint labs were recruited to
  UAB. Dr. Lund is currently serving as the Charles H. McCauley Professor 
 and Chair of the Department of Microbiology. She holds a secondary appoin
 tment in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology and is a se
 nior scientist in the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Comprehensive A
 rthritis\, Musculoskeletal and Autoimmunity Center.
