DESCRIPTION:As we approach the one-year countdown to the 2024 election\, t
he campaign for the presidency is already in full swing-but many big ques
tions remain unanswered. Are we headed inevitably toward a rematch betwee
n President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump? What development
s over the next year could determine the outcome of the presidential race
and the contest for control of Congress? And what implications will 2024
have for the future of American democracy?\n\nDuke's Polis: Center for P
olitics and the Duke Triangle alumni chapter invite you to join award-win
ning journalist John Harwood ('78) for an exclusive conversation about th
ese questions and more\, featuring two leading national political strateg
ists: Sarah Longwell (President and CEO of Longwell Partners and Publishe
r of The Bulwark) and Michael Podhorzer (Senior Fellow at the Center for
American Progress and former political director of the AFL-CIO).\n\nThis
special event is open to all members of the Duke community\, Duke alumni\

o public health threats around the world by embracing a "big bet" mindset
  - the belief that large-scale change is possible when the latest advance

as part of The Rockefeller Foundation's $1 billion commitment to addressi
ng climate change\, he is leading efforts to advance innovations needed i
n the face of climate change's many health threats so the most vulnerable
can live healthier lives. In the 2024 Victor J. Dzau Distinguished Lectu

significant public health challenges in the past and how it can do so aga
in in the future. \n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n \nDr. Rajiv J. Shah is preside
nt of The Rockefeller Foundation\, a global institution committed to prom

and innovation. Under his leadership\, the Foundation raised and deployed
more than $1 billion to respond to the COVID pandemic at home and abroad
\, launched a $10 billion Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet to
help secure a just and green recovery\, and is currently seeking to adva
nce human opportunity even while reversing the climate crisis. Dr. Shah s
erves on President Biden's Defense Policy Board and is a member of the Am
erican Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council on Foreign Relations.
\n \nDr. Shah is the author of Big Bets: How Large-Scale Change Really H

DESCRIPTION:The Duke Women's Center will be hosting the Reproductive Justi
ce Conference as part of our Women's History Month programming in March 2
 024. We use SisterSong's definition of reproductive justice\, described a
s "the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy\, have children\,
not have children\, and parent the children we have in safe and sustaina
ble communities." The 2024 conference theme\, Healing Black Bodies and Bl
ack Maternal Health\, touches on many topics at the heart of reproductive
justice conversations\, from black maternal health and morbidity\, to re
gulations imposed on black bodies\, and feelings of love and worth tied t
o the body. Panel topics include "Black Maternal Health: Local to Nationa
l Activism\," "Reproductive Justice Scholarship" and more! Our keynote sp
eaker is author and activist Sonya Renee Taylor\, author of The Body is N
ot an Apology\, with a welcome address form doula and abortion rights act
ivist Camille Adair. Please email womenctr@duke.edu if you are interested
in participating or have any questions about the conference topic.

DESCRIPTION:The reaction on college campuses to the October 7 attacks\, th
e ongoing war in Gaza\, and the resulting humanitarian crises has been on
e of the defining events of the last year. The Provost's Forum will be an
opportunity to explore how universities can foster constructive discours
e and greater understanding on the conflicts in the Middle East and apply
knowledge and skills to help address critical needs in the region. Sessi
on topics will include:\n\n• The challenge of facilitating campus dialogu
 e on this and other contentious issues\;\n• Antisemitism\, Islamophobia\,
  and anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bias and discrimination\; and\n• Duke-led
projects making a difference and opportunities for members of the Duke co
mmunity to get involved.\n\nThe forum\, organized by the Provost's Initia
tive on the Middle East\, will feature a keynote address by Robert Pape\,
Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago and lead aut
hor of the study\, "Understanding Campus Fears After October 7 and How to
Reduce Them."\n\nProvost Alec D. Gallimore will open the forum\, and pan
el discussions will include Duke scholars from a wide range of academic d
isciplines. Each session will provide ample opportunities for audience en

s and building bridges among those with different perspectives. \n\nDue t
o overwhelming interest\, registration is now closed. A live simulcast of
the program will be shown in Page Auditorium for members of the Duke com

DESCRIPTION:Victor J. Dzau Distinguished Lecture in Global Health and Alum
ni Reception\nFor more than three decades\, Dr. Jim Yong Kim worked along
side global health visionary and Duke alumnus Dr. Paul Farmer to deliver
healthcare to some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable citizens. B
ut that mission did not end with Farmer's death in 2022. In the 2025 Vict
or J. Dzau Distinguished Lecture in Global Health\, Kim will share reflec
tions from his 40-year career in global health\, which began when he co-f
ounded Partners in Health with Farmer in 1987 and includes seven years as
president of the World Bank Group. Kim\, whose current leadership roles
include serving as chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity i
n Rwanda\, will discuss the critical work that remains to bring high-qual
ity healthcare to every global citizen\, and how emerging challenges such
as climate change and the growing crisis in mental health require a rene
wed commitment to Farmer's vision of global health equity. \n\nABOUT THE
SPEAKER\nA physician and anthropologist\, Dr. Kim's career has revolved a
round health\, education\, and improving the lives of the poor. He is vic
e chairman and partner of Global Infrastructure Partners\, a fund that in
vests in infrastructure projects across the world. He served as president
of the World Bank Group from 2012 to 2019\, overseeing unprecedented inv
estment in development priorities aimed at ending extreme poverty and boo
sting global prosperity. \n\nBefore joining the World Bank Group\, Kim se
rved as president of Dartmouth College and held professorships at Harvard
Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. From 2003 to 200
5\, he served as director of the World Health Organization's HIV/AIDS dep
artment. He led WHO's "3 by 5" initiative\, the first-ever global goal fo
r AIDS treatment\, which greatly expanded access to antiretroviral medica
tion in developing countries. \n\nA recipient of the MacArthur Foundation
's genius fellowship\, Kim was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 m
ost influential people in the world. In 2022\, he was named to succeed Fa
rmer as chancellor of the University of Global Health Eqquity\, a Rwanda-
based institution launched by Partners in Health and the Rwandan governme
nt to advance medical training and research across sub-Saharan Africa. \n
