DESCRIPTION:The overriding goal of Dr. Coleman's work is to identify novel
  treatments for alcohol use disorders and peripheral immune pathologies. 
  Currently\, this includes two main projects:\n\nNeuroimmune Signaling in
  Alcohol Use Disorders: The goal of this project is to determine the role
  of innate immune induction in the pathology of alcohol addiction across 
 the lifespan.  This project examines the overall hypothesis that chronic 
 ethanol induces innate immune signaling via Toll-like Receptors and cytok
 ines\, causing neurotoxicity and behavioral phenotypes associated with al
 coholism.  Specific immune inhibitors are assessed for their efficacy in 
 models of chronic alcohol abuse.\n\nPeripheral Immune Dysfunction in Syst
 emic Inflammatory Diseases: Alcoholics have altered peripheral immune fun
 ction\, associated with increased risk for sepsis and sepsis-related comp
 lications.  The goal of this project is to identify critical mediators of
  systemic immune dysfunction in critical illness settings such as sepsis 
 and burn injury.  We hope to identify common pathways in alcohol abuse an
 d critical illnesses that can be targeted for intervention to improve pat
 ient outcomes.

DESCRIPTION:My research focuses on understanding how emotional events modu
 late cognitive processes in the human brain. We aim to identify brain reg
 ions that encode the emotional properties of sensory stimuli\, and to sho
 w how these regions interact with neural systems supporting social cognit
 ion\, executive control\, and learning and memory. To achieve this goal\,
  we use a variety of cognitive neuroscience techniques in human subject p
 opulations. These include psychophysiological monitoring\, functional mag
 netic resonance imaging (fMRI)\, machine learning\,  and behavioral studi
 es in healthy adults as well as psychiatric patients. This integrative ap
 proach capitalizes on recent advances in the field and may lead to new in
 sights into cognitive-emotional interactions in the brain.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Meade's domestic research program focuses on predictors of
  HIV risk behavior in adults with substance use and psychiatric disorders
 \, and the relationship between neuropsychiatric conditions and continued
  risk behavior in HIV-positive adults. She is particularly interested in 
 how drug addiction and HIV infection impact executive functions\, such as
  decision making\, that lead individuals to engage in risky behaviors. Ma
 ny of her current projects incorporate MRI to isolate the effects of addi
 ction and HIV on both brain function and structure. Dr. Meade is also int
 erested in the development of evidence-based treatments to improve cognit
 ive functioning and reduce risk behaviors among drug users.\n\nGiven that
  most people infected or affected by HIV/AIDS live in Sub-Saharan Africa\
 , Dr. Meade's international research program is based in South Africa. Th
 e Western Cape has experienced a dramatic increase in methamphetamine use
  since the early 2000s\, and there is concern that it may further fuel th
 e HIV epidemic in this country. Current projects focus on characterizing 
 drug addiction and HIV risk behaviors in this understudied group\, both i
 n in community and treatment settings\, and ultimately increasing uptake 
 of HIV services to improve health outcomes and reduce the continued sprea
 d of HIV.

DESCRIPTION:How do we learn and know? For much of my career it was assumed
  that neurons respond to external stimuli as if to represent them\, but a
 n equally plausible model asserts that neuronal activity is fundamentally
  internally-organized and instead fit to external features of the world. 
 I will report on our investigations of acquired cognition through studies
  of spatially-tuned cells in the medial entorhinal cortex and hippocampus
 . We started with the "noise\," uncertainty of spatially-tuned action pot
 ential discharge\, a clue that cognitive variables might be driving that 
 noise. Our studies of knowledge embrace the interplay across the molecula
 r\, synaptic\, network\, and behavioral levels of biological organization
 . I'll discuss the discharge of hippocampus place cells and molecular sig
 naling during phencyclidine intoxication and I will discuss head-directio
 n cells in the medial entorhinal cortex as different examples of internal
 ly-organized neural representations during purposeful navigation of the e
 nvironment. We will then consider how cognitive control training causes l
 earning-to-learn\, persistently enhanced information processing\, altered
  synaptic function and molecular expression across synaptic populations o
 f the entorhinal-hippocampal system. Finally\, I will discuss recent stud
 ies of the hippocampal remapping phenomenon\, in which place fields rearr
 ange according to cell-specific rules when the environment is changed. I 
 suggest a "reregistration" reinterpretation\, that hippocampal neural act
 ivity is fundamentally internally-organized such that cofiring relationsh
 ips amongst the cells are largely invariant across distinct environments\
 , despite the cell-specific rearrangement of place fields. Collectively t
 hese studies promote a view that rather than represent external informati
 on\, subjective\, internally-organized activity in the entorhinal-hippoca
 mpal circuit is actively fit to the environment for processing informatio
 n that enables navigation and serves cognition.\n\nAndré Fenton is a Prof
 essor of Neural Science. He studies how brains store experiences as memor
 ies\, and how the expression of knowledge activates information that is r
 elevant without activating what is irrelevant. His laboratory uses molecu
 lar\, electrophysiological\, behavioral\, engineering\, and theoretical m
 ethods to investigate these fundamental and interrelated issues in neuros
 cience.

DESCRIPTION:As we interact with the world around us\, we experience a cons
 tant stream of sensory inputs\, and generate a constant stream of behavio
 ral actions. What makes brains more than simple input-output machines is 
 their capacity to integrate sensory inputs with an animal's own internal 
 motivational state-alertness\, hunger\, level of stress-to produce behavi
 or in a manner that is flexible and adaptive. While some experimental wor
 k has examined the effect of motivational states such as alertness on neu
 ronal encoding of sensory cues\, a key theoretical question is how motiva
 tional states themselves are established and maintained by the brain. Her
 e\, we contrast neural population activity in two hypothalamic nuclei inv
 olved in control of social behavior\, captured using microendoscopic imag
 ing as a male mouse interacts with a male or female conspecific. We uncov
 er region-specific dynamical regimes that encode information about animal
 s' actions and motivational states\, and uncover slow-ramping and persist
 ent dynamics that are correlated with animals' levels of aggressive motiv
 ation. This may suggest a more general framework by which nuclei of the h
 ypothalamus shape animal behavior via graded and persistent representatio
 ns of motivational state.

DESCRIPTION:My research seeks to develop an understanding of human communi
 cation. I am interested in how listeners interpret a talker's intentions\
 , thoughts\, and feelings\, using both linguistic and non-linguistic aspe
 cts of spoken language. Speech is a highly complex signal. Speakers conve
 y information intentionally with the syllables\, words\, and sentences th
 at they utter. In addition\, however\, an enormous amount of information 
 is conveyed through a speaker's individual vocal characteristics and styl
 e. Spoken language requires that the listener integrate what is being sai
 d with how it is being said. Understanding the interplay between the perc
 eption of the words and sentences of spoken language with the processing 
 of non-linguistic properties of speech is essential for a complete accoun
 t of spoken communication.\n\nA fundamental assumption regarding spoken l
 anguage is that the relationship between the sound structure of spoken wo
 rds and semantic or conceptual meaning is arbitrary.  Although exceptions
  to this arbitrariness assumption have been reported (e.g.\, onomatopoeia
 )\, these instances are thought to be special cases\, with little relevan
 ce to spoken language and reference more generally.  In this talk\, I wil
 l review a series of findings that suggest that not only do non-arbitrary
  mappings between sound and meaning exist in spoken language\, but that l
 isteners are sensitive to these correspondences cross-linguistically and 
 that non-arbitrary mappings have functional significance for language pro
 cessing and word learning.  These findings suggest a general sensitivity 
 to cross-modal perceptual similarities may underlie the ability to match 
 word to meaning in spoken language.

DESCRIPTION:This talk presents fMRI evidence from our lab regarding episod
 ic memory networks and representations in young and older adults. Network
 s are investigated using functional connectivity and graph theory\, and r
 epresentations\, with representational similarity analyses. The network d
 ata indicate that episodic memory success is associated with stronger hip
 pocampal interactions with the rest of the brain\, and particularly with 
 a "hippocampal assembly" of occipito-temporal\, ventral parietal\, and fr
 ontal regions. In older adults\, medial temporal lobe interactions with t
 he rest of the brain are attenuated while prefrontal cortex interactions 
 with the rest of the brain are enhanced\, in a form of compensation. The 
 representational data show that encoded representations predict subsequen
 t memory depending not only on their perceptual vs. conceptual nature\, b
 ut also on where in the brain they are stored\, possibly reflecting an in
 teraction between representations and networks. In older adults\, sensory
  representations in more posterior temporal regions are dedifferentiated\
 , whereas semantic representations in more anterior temporal regions are 
 hyperdifferentiated\, with this last effect associated with compensation.
  The talk ends with two new studies linking functional connectivity and r
 epresentations.

DESCRIPTION:In the past three decades\, cultural psychologists have shown 
 how culture shapes cognitive\, emotional\, and motivational processes\, m
 aking it a crucial factor in understanding human behavior. While much of 
 this work has focused on comparing Western European and East Asian herita
 ges\, there is a growing need to empirically examine other cultures and u
 ncover new insights into how culture influences the mind. In this talk\, 
 I will examine the influence of ecology and geography on human activity\,
  leading to the formation of organized systems of cultural practices and 
 meanings known as "ecocultural complexes." These complexes have given ris
 e to diverse cultural zones we observe today. Outside of the modern West\
 , most cultural zones emphasize an interdependent view of the self. Notab
 ly\, however\, non-Western cultural zones display significant variability
 . I will explore several non-Western cultural zones\, such as Arab\, East
  Asian\, Latin American\, and South Asian zones\, and examine how these c
 ultures may have played a substantial role in shaping the contemporary We
 stern cultural zone. The Western cultural zone\, in contrast to non-Weste
 rn zones\, prioritizes the self's independence over interdependence. By g
 oing beyond the conventional Western-East Asian comparison\, this talk ai
 ms to broaden our understanding of the impact of culture on cognition\, e
 motions\, motivation\, and behavior. It highlights the significance of ex
 ploring diverse cultural zones to gain deeper insights into the intricate
  relationship between culture and the human mind.

 ng course of action\, even when we have ample time and computational reso
 urces. Why do we make mistakes? The noiseLab uses a combination of theore
 tical\, behavioral\, and neurobiological techniques to address this quest
 ion. In this talk\, Dr. Becket Ebitz will discuss converging evidence (1)
  that mistakes are the product of certain constraints on the computations
  involved in choice\, and (2) that these constraints may offer decision-m
 akers a selective advantage over long timescales\, even when they fail to
  produce the best decision in the moment.

DESCRIPTION:Psychology and Law research has established that mock jurors s
 ometimes evaluate the accuracy of eyewitnesses using a host of inappropri
 ate factors (e.g.\, attractiveness). Regardless\, evaluators of others' m
 emorial claims usually perform well above chance\, and the core mechanism
 s supporting this social metamemory capacity are largely unknown.  I will
  discuss our initial efforts at uncovering the processes and individual d
 ifferences that contribute to the ability of witnesses to effectively com
 municate the veracity of their memories recount their memorial experience
 s through natural language\, and the ability of evaluators to effectively
  decode this information. In doing so\, I will also show how we have used
  simple machine learners to provide an objective metric of the likely acc
 uracy of witnesses' verbal justifications of their memory conclusions.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Payne's research focuses on how sleep and stress influence
  human memory and psychological function.\n\nElevated stress hormones (e.
 g.\, cortisol and norepinephrine) can selectively benefit emotional memor
 y formation\, as can the occurrence of sleep shortly after learning. I wi
 ll discuss evidence\, from behavioral\, psychophysiological\, and neuroim
 aging studies\, suggesting that stress and arousal interact with sleep to
  augment memory consolidation\, particularly for emotionally negative inf
 ormation\, as well as how these relationships might change with age. I wi
 ll present a model arguing that stress hormones help 'tag' emotional info
 rmation as important to remember at the time of encoding\, thus enabling 
 subsequent\, sleep-based plasticity processes to optimally consolidate em
 otional information in a selective manner.

DESCRIPTION:Visual search is a complex task that humans perform many times
  throughout the day. Examples include searching for the perfect snack in 
 a supermarket\, looking for a misplaced phone in a cluttered room\, or fi
 nding a friend in a busy restaurant. The efficiency with which we perform
  these tasks has a significant impact on the quality of our lives. When w
 e can find what we're looking for quickly\, we easily move through our da
 ily tasks. However\, when it is difficult\, we waste time or even fail to
  achieve our final goals of making a meal\, getting to an appointment\, o
 r socializing with a friend. Successful search processes rely on attentio
 nal mechanisms to organize knowledge of the past and expectations of the 
 future to optimally sample information from the external world to guide b
 ehavior. But how do we do this? In this talk\, I'll describe work we've b
 een doing in the lab that looks at how attentional guidance uses coarse b
 ut adaptive information to guide attention toward targets\, whereas targe
 t decisions rely on more precise and complete target information. We sugg
 est that visual search guidance and decision stages use different templat
 e information to maximize search efficiency.

DESCRIPTION:Delirium is the most common post-surgical complication among o
 lder adults. Despite its prevalence\, delirium-an acute disorder of atten
 tion and arousal-can be devastating for patients as it increases the risk
  of Alzheimer's disease and death. This presentation will review what is 
 known about delirium from a cognitive neuroscience and neurobiological pe
 rspective. It will also introduce the brain-heart-immune axis\, a multi-s
 ystem framework that we developed to characterize possible delirium vulne
 rability. Finally\, our group has identified pre-surgery EEG patterns ass
 ociated with resilient attentional control and diminished delirium severi
 ty after surgery. These new EEG data suggest that attentional control may
  play a critical role in neurocognitive resilience among older surgery pa
 tients.

DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis is a Professor at Princeton Univer
 sity\, where she directs the Music Cognition Lab. Her research approaches
  music from the combined perspectives of music theory/musicology and cogn
 itive science. Her book On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind (Oxford Unive
 rsity Press) received the 2014 Wallace Berry Award from the Society for M
 usic Theory\, and the 2015 ASCAP Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award. Her l
 atest book The Psychology of Music: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford Uni
 versity Press) was published in 2018 and has been translated into Spanish
 \, Hungarian\, Japanese\, and is forthcoming in Chinese\, Arabic\, and Th
 ai. Her co-edited book The Science-Music Borderlands: Reckoning with the 
 Past and Imagining the Future came out this year with MIT Press. Projects
  on cross-cultural approaches to narrative perceptions of music\, and on 
 music and creativity\, have been supported by successive grants from the 
 National Science Foundation. She has been a Kavli Fellow of the National 
 Academy of Sciences as well as a National Endowment for the Humanities Su
 mmer Scholar.

DESCRIPTION:In 1834\, Robert Adams reported a "peculiar optical phenomenon
 " upon viewing the Falls of Foyers in Scotland. "Having steadfastly looke
 d" at the falls for a moment\, he found that a stationary rocky face brie
 fly appeared "as if in motion upwards\, and with an apparent velocity equ
 al to that of the descending water". Unbeknownst to him at the time\, Ada
 ms was experiencing what we now think of as a canonical case of perceptua
 l adaptation. These days\, however\, cases of adaptation like this one ha
 ve become more than a "peculiar phenomenon". Adaptation is a construct of
  great theoretical importance: It is seen by many to be one of the key fa
 ctors\, if not the key factor\, which helps us to distinguish between tha
 t which is perceived (i.e.\, as we see the color red) and that which is c
 onceived (i.e.\, as we think about kinds of fruits). It is\, in other wor
 ds\, said to be a tool that allows us to carve nature at its joints. In t
 his talk\, I'm going to argue that perceptual adaptation is not the unifi
 ed phenomenon that many take it to be and that\, therefore\, it may not b
 e a very useful 'theoretical scalpel' after all. I'll focus on two cases 
 studies of perceptual adaptation - visual number adaptation and visual si
 ze adaptation - and show how these cases pose challenges for the broader 
 understanding of adaptation. I argue\, ultimately\, that we should be ske
 ptical not only about the putative link between adaptation and perception
 \, but about the meaning of adaptation in sensory systems in general.

DESCRIPTION:The use of speech and language is one of the defining characte
 ristics of being human: It allows us to rapidly convey thoughts\, ideas\,
  and emotions with our friends and loved ones. The production of speech i
 s a multi-step process that transforms ideas into motor plans for speech 
 execution. Despite its ubiquity\, we do not fully understand the neural m
 echanisms that enables this process in the healthy brain\, and we have on
 ly begun to develop treatments to restore speech in people who have lost 
 this ability. In this talk\, I will discuss work from the lab that levera
 ges the availability of direct brain recordings in neurosurgical patients
  to understand and treat speech. First\, I will discuss recent work that 
 validates novel high-density high channel-count electrode technologies fo
 r restoring speech through neural prostheses. Second\, I will discuss wor
 k that elucidates the neural mechanisms for speech planning and execution
 . Together\, these projects emphasize the role of direct neural recording
 s for understanding speech and language - fundamental components of human
  existence\, and offer new vistas to study the human brain in health and 
 disease.
