DESCRIPTION:In 1834\, Robert Adams reported a "peculiar optical phenomenon
 " upon viewing the Falls of Foyers in Scotland. "Having steadfastly looke
 d" at the falls for a moment\, he found that a stationary rocky face brie
 fly appeared "as if in motion upwards\, and with an apparent velocity equ
 al to that of the descending water". Unbeknownst to him at the time\, Ada
 ms was experiencing what we now think of as a canonical case of perceptua
 l adaptation. These days\, however\, cases of adaptation like this one ha
 ve become more than a "peculiar phenomenon". Adaptation is a construct of
  great theoretical importance: It is seen by many to be one of the key fa
 ctors\, if not the key factor\, which helps us to distinguish between tha
 t which is perceived (i.e.\, as we see the color red) and that which is c
 onceived (i.e.\, as we think about kinds of fruits). It is\, in other wor
 ds\, said to be a tool that allows us to carve nature at its joints. In t
 his talk\, I'm going to argue that perceptual adaptation is not the unifi
 ed phenomenon that many take it to be and that\, therefore\, it may not b
 e a very useful 'theoretical scalpel' after all. I'll focus on two cases 
 studies of perceptual adaptation - visual number adaptation and visual si
 ze adaptation - and show how these cases pose challenges for the broader 
 understanding of adaptation. I argue\, ultimately\, that we should be ske
 ptical not only about the putative link between adaptation and perception
 \, but about the meaning of adaptation in sensory systems in general.

DESCRIPTION:The use of speech and language is one of the defining characte
 ristics of being human: It allows us to rapidly convey thoughts\, ideas\,
  and emotions with our friends and loved ones. The production of speech i
 s a multi-step process that transforms ideas into motor plans for speech 
 execution. Despite its ubiquity\, we do not fully understand the neural m
 echanisms that enables this process in the healthy brain\, and we have on
 ly begun to develop treatments to restore speech in people who have lost 
 this ability. In this talk\, I will discuss work from the lab that levera
 ges the availability of direct brain recordings in neurosurgical patients
  to understand and treat speech. First\, I will discuss recent work that 
 validates novel high-density high channel-count electrode technologies fo
 r restoring speech through neural prostheses. Second\, I will discuss wor
 k that elucidates the neural mechanisms for speech planning and execution
 . Together\, these projects emphasize the role of direct neural recording
 s for understanding speech and language - fundamental components of human
  existence\, and offer new vistas to study the human brain in health and 
 disease.

 ing worldwide challenges\, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This research\,
  involving participants from 68 countries\, demonstrated that moral ident
 ity\, morality-as-cooperation\, and the breadth of moral circles signific
 antly influenced individuals' willingness to engage in public health beha
 viors and support related policies. Following this\, I will introduce the
  Social Affective Neuroscience Institute\, focusing on its mission to fos
 ter global collaborative research. I will outline how we are building on 
 the success of our previous ManyLabs projects and creating new opportunit
 ies for international partnerships\, with a particular focus on exploring
  morality and cooperation across diverse cultural contexts.

DESCRIPTION:Rarely does the path to goal accomplishment look perfect. Maki
 ng progress on everyday goals is often unsteady\, in that each unit of ef
 fort or time spent generates unequal results. In this research\, we exami
 ne how progress steadiness affects motivation. Although unsteady goal pro
 gress is common\, we suggest that goal pursuers find it discouraging. We 
 hypothesize that even when goal progress is equal in amount and speed\, u
 nsteady (vs. steady) progress decreases people's motivation and increases
  quitting. Across a variety of goal domains\, findings from vignette expe
 riments\, a recall study\, and real-time experiments support these hypoth
 eses. We lay out a theoretical model of how we expect steadiness to affec
 t motivation\, and test aspects of the model throughout the studies\, fin
 ding boundary conditions such as ambiguity of goal attainability (Study 3
 ) and progress abstraction (Study 4). Finally\, we demonstrate that manip
 ulations targeting expectations about progress steadiness can reduce the 
 negative effects of unsteady progress (Study 5). These results are the fi
 rst to consider how progress steadiness can affect motivation.

DESCRIPTION:The success of the human species depends on our ability to int
 eract with and rely on each other. Social interactions\, however\, are so
 me of the most uncertain situations we encounter. Other people's intentio
 ns are both hidden from us and are constantly changing\, which makes figu
 ring out who to trust or cooperate with a persistent challenge. Inferring
  the intentions of others becomes even more challenging when we consider 
 that all social interactions play out on the backdrop of our dense\, comp
 lex social networks\, where a single misstep can ripple across the commun
 ity. My lab explores the mechanisms that guide adaptive social learning a
 nd decision-making under uncertainty. We examine these mechanisms on mult
 iple levels\, from resolving uncertainty about another's moral motives in
  order to trust the right person\, to understanding maladaptive coping st
 rategies that can hinder large-scale cooperation\, as seen in political p
 olarization. We use a multi-discipline approach to identify the cognitive
  and neural machinery underlying human social behavior\, including applyi
 ng theories from animal models\, borrowing methods from computational neu
 roscience\, and leveraging various neuroimaging techniques. By observing 
 humans in both controlled laboratory settings and out in the wild\, we in
 terrogate a spectrum of social behaviors. This talk will give a glimpse i
 nto how humans navigate their uncertain social worlds\, testing the tools
  we use to resolve uncertainty in order to make the most adaptive social 
 choices.

DESCRIPTION:Countless behavioral studies have demonstrated how validly-cue
 d visual attention can enhance performance on challenging tasks. Neural r
 ecordings taken during such conditions of attention have identified the m
 echanisms that may support this enhanced performance. Given that convolut
 ional neural networks can be thought of as neurally-plausible task-perfor
 ming models of visual cortex\, we can use them to connect neural mechanis
 ms of attention to increases in task performance. I will present a series
  of completed and ongoing studies that demonstrate this principle. Topics
  covered will include spatial and feature attention\, the relationship be
 tween attention and learning\, the circuit mechanisms needed for attentio
 n\, and how these findings can extend to the auditory system as well.

DESCRIPTION:The motor system displays a wide range of learning dynamics\, 
 from one-shot learning to months-long skill mastery. Computational models
  suggest that this diverse functionality stems from combining multiple co
 mputations\, such as determining the most relevant previously learned mot
 or skill for a particular context and then adapting the skill as needed. 
 Yet most motor learning tasks are designed to study a single learning com
 putation. We developed a novel sensorimotor interface task that produces 
 a rich range of motor learning dynamics.  Our task introduces inherent re
 dundancy between the space of possible movements and the task - a feature
  of most motor skills. In this talk\, I'll present data from monkey and h
 uman experiments showing that in this redundant task\, some perturbations
  are learned through rapid adaptation while other perturbations evoke slo
 wer "de novo" learning. We also found evidence that prior experience infl
 uenced learning in future perturbations. I'll discuss how these results g
 enerate new hypotheses about the computations that distinguish different 
 forms of motor learning. I'll also discuss how these findings can be used
  to inform motor therapies like brain-computer interfaces.

DESCRIPTION:The struggle between desire and control is as old as human his
 tory.  With the increasing sophistication of brain imaging techniques\, w
 e now have a biological fingerprint of the dueling neural networks that s
 truggle to keep our cravings in-check and our   has been described in art
 \, religion\, philosophy\, and music for centuries.    With the FDA-clear
 ance of transcranial magnetic stimulation as the first neural-circuit bas
 ed therapeutic for smoking cessation\, there has been elevated interest i
 n identifying novel brain targets and behavioral primes for improving NIB
 S addiction outcomes. While most o the research in the substance use diso
 rders field has focused on the The medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) is a p
 romising target given its role in modulating cue-reactivity across substa
 nces and species. Additionally exposure to a salient drug cue or inductio
 n of a drug related memory appears to be important for optimizing treatme
 nt outcomes. This talk will review the results of  the largest studies to
  date in the TMS for addiction field - highlighting milestones in smoking
  cessation\, psychostimulants\, and alcohol use disorder research - many 
 of which have already received regulatory clearance in countries across t
 he world.

DESCRIPTION:Humans cognition is marked by high levels of cognitive control
  and flexible decision-making. What are the evolutionary roots of these c
 ognitive traits? I will present research examining different aspects of v
 alue-based decision-making\, executive function\, and social decision mak
 ing capacities in primates. I will use this comparative data to test hypo
 theses about when and why different facets of 'intelligent' behavior emer
 ge. Specifically\, I will compare across different species that show vari
 ation in their natural history\, examine the comparative developmental tr
 ajectories of these skills\, and finally test patterns of individual vari
 ation in animal cognition to understand the biological context of differe
 nt cognitive capacities.\n\nAlexandra Rosati is an Associate Professor of
  Psychology and Anthropology at the University of Michigan. She received 
 an A.B. in Psychology from Harvard University\, a Ph.D. in Evolutionary A
 nthropology from Duke University\, and completed a postdoctoral fellowshi
 p at Yale University. Dr. Rosati's research examines the evolutionary ori
 gins of the human mind through comparative studies of cognition and behav
 ior in other primates. Her research is supported by the National Science 
 Foundation and the National Institutes of Health\, and she has been recog
 nized with an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship\, an NSF CAR
 EER award\, and the American Psychological Association's Award for Early 
 Career Contributions to Psychology.

DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Surgeon General and leading pediatric health organiza
 tions have recently declared a national state of emergency for adolescent
  mental health. Demand for mental health services has broadly outstripped
  capacity\, underscoring that the majority of affected individuals do not
  receive sufficient treatment.  Moreover\, because gold-standard treatmen
 ts are effective for only ~50% of patients\, developing novel\, mechanist
 ically driven\, treatments is crucial for improving clinical outcomes and
  potentiating early preventive care. The default mode network (DMN)\, an 
 intrinsic brain network associated with inner mental life\, is over-engag
 ed in patients suffering from anxiety\, depression and psychosis and is p
 ositively associated with increased clinical symptoms. We hypothesize tha
 t DMN hyperconnectivity is a core transdiagnostic shared neural mechanism
  underlying mood and psychotic disorders.   Hence\, we developed a mindfu
 lness-based real-time fMRI neurofeedback (mbNF) intervention as a novel "
 network therapeutic" targeting DMN. Mindfulness meditation -drawing atten
 tional focus to the present and metacognitive awareness of ongoing though
 ts - suppresses the DMN and reduces the DMN hyperconnectivity\, while neu
 rofeedback provides a mental mirror of personalized brain network modulat
 ion empowering patients agency to train their brains to tune their minds.
   Importantly\, the reduction of DMN hyperconnectivity\, post mbNF\, is a
 ssociated with a reduction of clinical symptoms and increased state mindf
 ulness.  Finally\, we are developing a closed loop\, personalized neurofe
 edback system designed to: a) elucidate and track personalized\, intrinsi
 c brain networks (and their electrophysiological correlates) along with t
 heir associated mental states/symptoms\; b) elucidate the symptom's neura
 l antecedents\, through the use of real-time fMRI triggered experience sa
 mpling (rt-fMRI-ES)\; and c) trigger just-in-time adaptive neuromodulator
 y interventions.

DESCRIPTION:How do we learn in dynamic\, context-rich environments\, and w
 hat cognitive and neural mechanisms support this learning? This talk synt
 hesizes findings from two distinct lines of research that highlight the p
 owerful role of context in shaping memory. The first leverages immersive 
 virtual reality (VR) environments to investigate how distinctive spatial 
 contexts enhance long-term memory retention and minimize interference. Us
 ing fMRI to capture neural signatures of mental context reinstatement\, w
 e demonstrate how cortical reactivation of a learning context can bolster
  recall of information learned in that context. Additional work exploring
  the Method of Loci mnemonic technique\, adapted for use in VR\, showcase
 s how spatial scaffolding supports the memorization of non-spatial inform
 ation. The second line of research examines context-dependent statistical
  learning\, assessing whether individuals can implicitly acquire multiple
  sets of temporal associations across shifting contexts. Behavioral resul
 ts reveal for the first time that humans are capable of learning of conte
 xt-dependent visual object sequences\, even when context shifts are unsig
 naled. Neural network modeling shows context-gated mnemonic predictions c
 an be achieved without any explicit coding of context\, relying instead o
 n emergent dynamics within its hidden layers. Representational similarity
  analysis of these hidden layer representations tracks the evolution of c
 ontext sensitivity and its relation to task performance. Together\, these
  studies shed light on how spatial and temporal contexts profoundly shape
  our ability to acquire\, retain\, and retrieve information to support me
 mory-guided behavior.

  care science must battle the interfering effects of certain aspects of p
 sychology. These challenging aspects of human psychology were identified 
 early in the history of the scientific method by Francis Bacon in his Nov

 26/science.aba5802\n \n\nKevin P. Weinfurt\, PhD\, is Professor and Vice 
 Chair of Research in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Duke
  University Medical Center and a faculty member of the Duke Clinical Rese
 arch Institute. He holds secondary appointment as a Professor of Psycholo
 gy and Neuroscience\, Professor of  Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\, 
 Professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics\, and a Faculty Associate o
 f the Trent Center for Bioethics\, Humanities & History of Medicine. Dr. 
 Weinfurt also co-directs the Center for Health Measurement at Duke and is
  co-director of the Clinical Research Training Program (Masters degree of
 fered through the School of Medicine). Dr. Weinfurt worked as a Special G
 overnmental Employee for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for four y
 ears\, helping to create the Patient-Focused Drug Development guidance se
 ries. He is also a member of the Secretary's Advisory Committee for Human
  Research Protections.

DESCRIPTION:Since 1866\, Black Americans in Texas have commemorated emanci
 pation from slavery with annual Juneteenth celebrations. Although other c
 elebrations of emancipation took place in other areas and at different ti
 mes\, Juneteenth celebrations migrated to other states. And now\, as a re
 latively new federal holiday in the US\, Juneteenth commemoration practic
 es provide an opportunity to explore how different commemoration activiti
 es emerge and become hegemonic. In this talk\, I will share data from two
  studies (one correlational\, one experimental) that explore the relation
 ships between what comes to mind when people think about Juneteenth\, the
 ir identities\, and attitudes about the holiday. Using a cultural psychol
 ogical perspective\, I will discuss the implications of Juneteenth for un
 derstanding the bi-directional relationships between collective memory\, 
 collective identity\, and collective action.

DESCRIPTION:Approximately 90% of individuals will experience a traumatic e
 vent\, which can lead to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder
  (PTSD). Interventions administered in the early aftermath of the trauma 
 can help prevent symptom development\; however\, identifying those at ris
 k for PTSD and who would benefit from early treatment is challenging\, gi
 ven the complex interplay between biological and environmental factors. T
 his talk will present ongoing efforts to identify early markers of PTSD i
 n recent trauma survivors by leveraging multimodal neuroimaging\, geospat
 ial analyses\, and deep phenotyping. Recent work on the underlying biolog
 ical mechanisms by which greenspace\, air pollution\, and socioeconomic d
 isadvantage may impact PTSD development will be discussed. Further\, the 
 talk will explore how differential exposure to socioenvironmental factors
  drives ethnoracial inequities in the biological and psychological conseq
 uences of trauma. The findings highlight the importance of considering so
 cioenvironmental factors in neurobiological models of stress and trauma-r
 elated disorders and clinical care.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will present how emotion dysregulation is a k
 ey aspect of psychopathology and how intervention for emotion dysregulati
 on can be relevant across disorders. Next\, I'll highlight existing treat
 ments for emotion dysregulation and the need to optimize these interventi
 ons. I will introduce neuroimaging and neurostimulation as tools that can
  enhance psychotherapies for transdiagnostic emotion dysregulation. I wil
 l then present findings from my program of research\, which integrates pr
 ecision neuromodulation with cognitive restructuring to identify brain an
 d behavioral changes across various disorders. Current findings\, next st
 eps\, and a blueprint for other applications at the intersection of neuro
 imaging\, neuromodulation\, and behavioral intervention will be discussed
 .

DESCRIPTION:The brain is incredibly complex\, with diverse functions that 
 emerge from the coordinated activity of billions of neurons. These functi
 ons vary across brain regions and adapt dynamically as we engage in diffe
 rent tasks\, process sensory information\, or generate behavior. Yet\, ea
 ch neural recording captures only a small glimpse of this immense complex
 ity\, offering a limited view of the broader system. This motivates the n
 eed for an algorithmic approach to stitch together diverse datasets\, int
 egrating neural activity across brain regions\, cell types\, and individu
 als. In this talk\, I will present our work on building scalable models p
 retrained on a broad corpus of neural recordings. Our findings demonstrat
 e positive transfer across tasks\, cell types\, regions\, and individuals
 \, effectively bridging gaps between isolated studies. This unified frame
 work opens new possibilities for brain-machine interfaces and cross-speci
 es neuroscience\, and offers a path toward more generalizable models of b
 rain function.

 heir subjective experience of a stimulus? This talk will cover recent wor
 k using behavioral\, neuroimaging\, and computational approaches to under

DESCRIPTION:What is perception? The most intuitive and influential answer 
 to this question has long been the one given by David Marr: To see the wo
 rld is "to know what is where by looking" - to transform light into repre
 sentations of objects and their features\, located somewhere in space. Bu
 t is this all that perception delivers? Consider the figure to the right\
 ; certainly you see some colored shapes\, as well as where they are locat
 ed. Yet\, beyond this\, you may also see how they relate to one another: 
 The green piece can fit into the others\, and even create a new object wi
 th a shape of its own.\n\nIn this talk\, I present evidence that percepti
 on extracts relations between objects in much the same way as it processe
 s the objects themselves\, and that these relations are abstract\, struct
 ured\, and surprisingly sophisticated. We'll explore (and experience) the
  perception of several sophisticated relations between objects\, includin
 g combining\, supporting\, containing\, covering\, and fastening - as wel
 l as relational "illusions" in which objects appear to interact with myst
 eriously invisible entities. Together\, this work suggests that we see no
 t only "what" and "where"\, but also "how".

DESCRIPTION:Culture and cognition are deeply intertwined: culture both sha
 pes cognition and is shaped by cognition\, in turn. How do we gain tracti
 on on the study of this complex and dynamic process? In this talk\, I off
 er a number of directions for the study of culture in cognitive science. 
 I'll first present a brief sketch of the historical backdrop\, then share
  a number of theoretical and methodological approaches\, including a new 
 typology of classifying culture's effects of cognition. I'll next turn to
  my own empirical work conducted across societies to illustrate these ide
 as in practice. I'll present data on the development of cooperative behav
 ior\, the link between moralization and identity\, and consider whether c
 ultural inputs can penetrate core processes such as visual perception\, u
 sing the Müller-Lyer illusion as a case study. I'll also touch on how cog
 nition shapes culture\, focusing on lifespan shifts in cognitive prioriti
 es and children's role in generating peer culture. Taken together\, this 
 work aims to reintegrate the study of culture into cognitive science as a
 n essential tool for understanding the mind.

DESCRIPTION:Understanding morality is central to understanding human behav
 ior\, cognition\, and culture.\nNarratives\, one of the oldest forms of h
 uman expression\, frequently convey moral themes that\nresonate with audi
 ences across time and location. This talk first delves into moral represe
 ntations\,\nexploring their essence\, methods for identification\, and pr
 actical applications. I will define moral\nrepresentations as the ways in
  which moral principles\, values\, and conflicts are depicted in textual\
 nand audio-visual narratives\, and encoded in the human brain. Drawing on
  Moral Foundations\nTheory (MFT) and Morality as Cooperation Theory (MAC)
 \, I will introduce into the complexity\nof extracting moral representati
 ons from stories with high reliability and validity. Next\, I will\nprese
 nt a dissociable\, sensitive and specific neural signature of moral repre
 sentations\, focusing on\nthe centuries old question of whether the human
  brain uses domain general or specialized networks\nto process moral info
 rmation. In addition\, I will demonstrate how the severity of moral wrong
 ness\njudgments can be decoded from this neural signature. Finally\, I pr
 ovide examples of how moral\nrepresentations can be used to predict diver
 se human cognitions and media use behaviors ranging\nfrom the choice of l
 anguage to news sharing behavior\, misinformation detection\, and story\n
 engagement. By the end of the presentation\, I hope that the audience wil
 l gain a deeper appreciation\nof moral representations as a critical mech
 anism that shapes our relationship with narratives and\nour broader socia
 l world.
