DESCRIPTION:Sensory signals\, such as light\, sound\, and skin deformation
\, are transduced to neural electrical impulses\, or spikes\, at the peri
phery\, and these spikes are subsequently transmitted to the neocortex th
rough the sensory pathways\, ultimately forming perception of the sensory
world. Sensory processing along these pathways is heavily dependent upon
both the external stimulus statistics and internal brain state. Therefor
e\, to restore and enhance brain sensory functions using brain-machine in
terfaces\, we will need to not only understand how the information is dyn
amically encoded by populations of neurons\, but also how to devise strat
egies to optimize brain state. My talk will first use sensory adaptation
as an example to demonstrate that the sensory pathway adaptively changes
the neural code based on the properties of sensory stimuli. Sensory adapt
ation strongly shaped thalamic synchrony and dictated the window of integ
ration of the recipient cortical targets\, effectively switching the natu
re of what information about the outside world is being conveyed to corte
 x. Second\, I will discuss how to control the activity of the locus coeru
leus - norepinephrine (LC-NE) system\, a major neuromodulatory system tha
t controls brain state\, to enhance sensory processing.

DESCRIPTION:Objects constitute the fundamental currency of the brain: they
are things that we perceive\, remember\, and think about. One of the mos
t important objects for a primate is a face. Research on the macaque face
patch system in recent years has given us a remarkable window into the d
etailed processes underlying object recognition. Dr. Tsao will discuss re
cent findings from her lab elucidating the code for face and object ident
ity in the temporal lobe\, and how this code is used by downstream areas.
Finally\, she will discuss the general problem of how the brain builds a
model of the world\, and how we are leveraging our access to a hierarchi
cal network for encoding object identity to gain new insight into this pr
 oblem.
