DESCRIPTION:The brain is incredibly complex\, with diverse functions that
emerge from the coordinated activity of billions of neurons. These functi
ons vary across brain regions and adapt dynamically as we engage in diffe
rent tasks\, process sensory information\, or generate behavior. Yet\, ea
ch neural recording captures only a small glimpse of this immense complex
ity\, offering a limited view of the broader system. This motivates the n
eed for an algorithmic approach to stitch together diverse datasets\, int
egrating neural activity across brain regions\, cell types\, and individu
als. In this talk\, I will present our work on building scalable models p
retrained on a broad corpus of neural recordings. Our findings demonstrat
e positive transfer across tasks\, cell types\, regions\, and individuals
\, effectively bridging gaps between isolated studies. This unified frame
work opens new possibilities for brain-machine interfaces and cross-speci
es neuroscience\, and offers a path toward more generalizable models of b
 rain function.

DESCRIPTION:Faced with ambiguous input\, different individuals often come
to different interpretations. When\, how\, and why do people diverge in t
heir subjective experience of a stimulus? This talk will cover recent wor
k using behavioral\, neuroimaging\, and computational approaches to under
stand how features of individuals\, features of external input\, and brai
n activity interact to give rise to idiosyncratic percepts of complex inf

DESCRIPTION:What is perception? The most intuitive and influential answer
to this question has long been the one given by David Marr: To see the wo
rld is "to know what is where by looking" - to transform light into repre
sentations of objects and their features\, located somewhere in space. Bu
t is this all that perception delivers? Consider the figure to the right\
; certainly you see some colored shapes\, as well as where they are locat
ed. Yet\, beyond this\, you may also see how they relate to one another:
The green piece can fit into the others\, and even create a new object wi
th a shape of its own.\n\nIn this talk\, I present evidence that percepti
on extracts relations between objects in much the same way as it processe
s the objects themselves\, and that these relations are abstract\, struct
ured\, and surprisingly sophisticated. We'll explore (and experience) the
perception of several sophisticated relations between objects\, includin
 g combining\, supporting\, containing\, covering\, and fastening - as wel
l as relational "illusions" in which objects appear to interact with myst
eriously invisible entities. Together\, this work suggests that we see no
t only "what" and "where"\, but also "how".

DESCRIPTION:Culture and cognition are deeply intertwined: culture both sha
pes cognition and is shaped by cognition\, in turn. How do we gain tracti
on on the study of this complex and dynamic process? In this talk\, I off
er a number of directions for the study of culture in cognitive science.
I'll first present a brief sketch of the historical backdrop\, then share
a number of theoretical and methodological approaches\, including a new
typology of classifying culture's effects of cognition. I'll next turn to
my own empirical work conducted across societies to illustrate these ide
as in practice. I'll present data on the development of cooperative behav
ior\, the link between moralization and identity\, and consider whether c
ultural inputs can penetrate core processes such as visual perception\, u
sing the Müller-Lyer illusion as a case study. I'll also touch on how cog
nition shapes culture\, focusing on lifespan shifts in cognitive prioriti
es and children's role in generating peer culture. Taken together\, this
work aims to reintegrate the study of culture into cognitive science as a
n essential tool for understanding the mind.

DESCRIPTION:Understanding morality is central to understanding human behav
ior\, cognition\, and culture.\nNarratives\, one of the oldest forms of h
uman expression\, frequently convey moral themes that\nresonate with audi
ences across time and location. This talk first delves into moral represe
ntations\,\nexploring their essence\, methods for identification\, and pr
actical applications. I will define moral\nrepresentations as the ways in
which moral principles\, values\, and conflicts are depicted in textual\
nand audio-visual narratives\, and encoded in the human brain. Drawing on
Moral Foundations\nTheory (MFT) and Morality as Cooperation Theory (MAC)
\, I will introduce into the complexity\nof extracting moral representati
ons from stories with high reliability and validity. Next\, I will\nprese
nt a dissociable\, sensitive and specific neural signature of moral repre
sentations\, focusing on\nthe centuries old question of whether the human
brain uses domain general or specialized networks\nto process moral info
rmation. In addition\, I will demonstrate how the severity of moral wrong
ness\njudgments can be decoded from this neural signature. Finally\, I pr
ovide examples of how moral\nrepresentations can be used to predict diver
se human cognitions and media use behaviors ranging\nfrom the choice of l
anguage to news sharing behavior\, misinformation detection\, and story\n
engagement. By the end of the presentation\, I hope that the audience wil
l gain a deeper appreciation\nof moral representations as a critical mech
anism that shapes our relationship with narratives and\nour broader socia
 l world.

DESCRIPTION:This talk examines how network-based models and functional neu
roimaging biomarkers can inform precision neuromodulation strategies for
treating substance use disorders\, highlighting the role of individualize
d\, fMRI-guided targeting in shaping mechanistic insight and intervention
design. I will juxtapose this work with emerging evidence from diffuse\,
  high-penetration stimulation approaches-such as helmet-coil deep TMS-tha
t\, despite reduced anatomical specificity\, demonstrate meaningful clini
cal effects and offer substantial advantages for scalability\, accessibil
ity\, and real-world implementation. Together\, these contrasting methods
illuminate when precision is essential\, when broader stimulation may be
sufficient\, and how integrating both paradigms can shape a neuroscience
-informed neuromodulation framework that balances mechanistic precision w
 ith broad clinical reach.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Marshall is broadly interested in the neurobiological mech
anisms that contribute to alcohol abuse. The nature of these interests h
as led to the Marshall lab using pharmacologic\, molecular\, and behavior
al techniques to find novel therapeutic targets to curb alcohol misuse. H
is main focus is on the effects that dysregulation of glia and cytokines
have on brain damage and addiction.

DESCRIPTION:In the real world\, objects are discrete physical entities - y
our coffee mug either is or is not in your hand. As a result\, both in ev
eryday life and in perception and memory research\, there is a tendency t
o use a physical metaphor to understand our mental representations: peopl
e tend to think of an object they are trying to perceive or remember as e
ither in mind or not in their mind\, and to say that we hold items in mem
ory\, as we hold real objects in our hand. In the domains of visual worki
ng memory\, visual long-term memory and perceptual awareness\, this discr
ete thinking is often formalized using models that fit psychophysical dat
a\, and are based on the premise that people often completely lose an ite
m from memory or completely fail to encode or perceive an object. In this
talk\, I'll review our recent work re-examining this view and suggesting
a simple alternative model motivated by neural population coding and rep
resentational geometry. This model accounts for large swaths of data on v
isual memory and perceptual awareness with only a concept of a continuous
ly varying memory match signal\, and without any concept of discrete all-
or-none failures. A core aspect of this model - key to understanding this
model's simplicity - is that the underlying representation of even simpl
e features tends to be very high-dimensional (e.g.\, as in population cod
es\, or in the features extracted from deep nets)\, and that in high-dime
nsional spaces\, the strength of representational match signals tends to
fall off highly non-linearly. Thus\, I'll argue considering the complex\,
high-dimensional nature of the neural representation of stimuli can\, co
unterintuitively\, lead to very straightforward cognitive models of perce
 ption and memory.

lk\, I will argue that the development of goal-directed behavior depends
on learning to learn. I will present a series of studies examining how th
e computations and neural mechanisms that underlie value-guided memory\,
flexible reinforcement learning\, and strategic exploration change from c
hildhood to adulthood\, and enable individuals to increasingly tailor the
ir behaviors to the demands of varied environments across development.

DESCRIPTION:The brain is an organ of communication. There is no single pat
hway for any neurobehavioral function or dysfunction. Drug abuse and addi
ction may at first appear to be due to the particular action of a drug at
a neurotransmitter receptor or other physiological target process\, but
because of the intricate communication among neural systems\, actions at
a particular receptor quickly involves a much broader array of interactin
g systems. Thus\, nicotine effects on nicotinic receptors and opiate effe
cts on opioid receptors quickly involve directly and indirectly many othe
r neural (and glial) systems involved in drug abuse and addiction. With d
rug reinforcement the involvement of dopaminergic innervation of the nucl
eus accumbens is the most obviously important interacting neural system\,
but there are many other interacting systems that play important roles.
This can complicate understanding of the neurobehavioral bases of drug ad
diction\, but it also presents many opportunities for developing effectiv
e therapeutic treatments. By investigating these interactions can provide
a more accurate understanding of neural bases of addiction and open mult
iple new opportunities for therapeutic treatment to reduce addiction. Thi
s talk will present the series of studies we have conducted with the rat
drug self-administration model investigating drug interactions to elucida
te nicotinic as well other drugs of abuse.

DESCRIPTION:Despite decades of progress in neuroimaging and systems neuros
cience\, we still lack a wiring diagram of the human brain. This gap refl
ects fundamental constraints of species and scale: invasive tract-tracing
methods cannot be applied in humans\, while whole-brain reconstruction i
n large nonhuman primates remains technically and computationally challen
 ging. As a result\, diffusion MRI-based tractography\, our primary tool f
or mapping human white matter\, remains only loosely anchored to ground-t
ruth axonal anatomy.\n\nIn this talk\, I outline an axon-centric strategy
for building a biologically informed wiring diagram of the human brain t
hrough a coordinated\, multimodal and multispecies approach. Leveraging r
ecent advances from the Center for Mesoscale Connectomics\, this framewor
k integrates novel types of tract-tracing\, polarization-sensitive optica
l coherence tomography (PS OCT)\, and diffusion MRI across nonhuman prima
tes and humans. By aligning these complementary modalities\, we can quant
itatively evaluate tractography accuracy\, test assumptions about streaml
ine behavior\, and identify representations shared across anatomical scal
es. Rather than relying solely on qualitative anatomical constraints\, th
is approach enables systematic\, data-driven refinement of diffusion MRI
models informed by true axonal organization.\n\nFinally\, I argue that co
nstructing an accurate wiring diagram of the human brain is not merely a
technical exercise\, but a prerequisite for progress in human circuit neu
roscience and neuromodulation. Precise knowledge of anatomical connectivi
ty is essential for interpreting function and for improving outcomes in c
ircuit-based interventions such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). Emerging
evidence shows that therapeutic efficacy and side effects of DBS depend
on capturing specific fiber pathways and that tract-informed metrics can
predict clinical response. Together\, these findings motivate a new gener
ation of connectomic tools that bridge basic neuroanatomy and human brain
intervention\, advancing both mechanistic understanding and clinical tra
 nslation.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Mental states represent the world in systematically
different ways\, encoding contents in multiple "codes" or "formats." For
example\, some mental states are thought to be image-like\, others senten
ce-like\; some analog\, others symbolic. The interface problem concerns h
ow agents can coordinate contents across different mental codes. The stan
dard assumption is that interfaces incur distinctive costs: translation f
rom one format to another is explanatorily mysterious and computationally
difficult. I argue that there is no reason to think that between-format
representational transitions\, or "translations\," are distinctively more
challenging to explain or to execute than within-format transitions\, or
"inferences." In fact\, translation and inference can exemplify similar
properties and fulfill similar functions. Where classical computational m
odels used inference to solve cognitive tasks\, many contemporary machine
learning models use translation. The diversity of representational forma
ts is not so much a barrier to rational agency as it is a way of realizin
 g it.

DESCRIPTION:LLMs are widely regarded as alien intelligences\, systems whos
e cognitive operations are fundamentally unlike our own. Apparent similar
ities to human cognition are therefore often seen as the result of anthro
pomorphic projection. I argue that this framing is mistaken. LLMs clearly
differ from humans in important respects\, including their physical subs
trate\, learning history\, and the environments with which they interact.
These differences make it all the more striking that contemporary LLM-ba
sed systems converge with human cognition on a number of principles of co
gnitive organization with longstanding support in cognitive science. I id
entify structural correspondences across five dimensions: inferential org
 anization\, computational architecture\, representational structure\, pre
 diction-driven learning\, and reinforcement-learning-like mechanisms supp
orting goal-directed control. These correspondences support a broader mod
el of intelligent cognition in which core principles long used to explain
human intelligence also characterize contemporary LLM-based systems.

DESCRIPTION:Mental imagery - the ability to visualize in the absence of ex
ternal stimulation - plays important roles in our lives: from spatial nav
igation and mental rotation to reliving past events and simulating future
scenarios. The subjective nature of mental imagery\, however\, poses ser
ious challenges for scientists looking to understand and precisely measur
e this inner phenomenon. In this talk\, I will share recent work from our
laboratory showing different ways in which we can improve the measuremen
t of imagery vividness\, for example\, by relying on physiological measur
es such as pupillometry. By leveraging behavioral tools from vision scien
ce\, we can also better characterize visual properties of mental images\,
such as sharpness or saturation\, and show how these relate to vividness
ratings. Finally\, large language models (LLMs) and their ability to com
plete classic mental imagery tasks despite relying on non-visual processi
ng offer an opportunity to reflect on the difficulty of creating purely v
isual mental imagery tasks. Together\, these studies help us develop a ne
w\, more robust scientific approach to studying our mind's eye.

DESCRIPTION:Modern brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) must support diverse\,
complex behaviors. This talk addresses the challenge of creating multifu
nctional neuroprosthetics from two perspectives. First\, we present a BCI
with clinical trial participants that enables intuitive switching betwee
n distinct outputs\, like speech and cursor control\, by seamlessly decod
ing user intent. Second\, using high-channel-count recordings in non-huma
n primates\, we investigate the neural basis for switching control modes.
We reveal that motor cortex employs an abstract\, effector-independent g
eometry for movement planning\, distinct from an effector-specific execut
ion layer. This compositional structure provides a powerful neuroscientif
ic blueprint for designing the next generation of scalable and versatile
 BCIs.

DESCRIPTION:Chronic pain has long been linked to glial and immune mechanis
ms in preclinical models\, yet direct evidence of neuroinflammation in hu
man pain conditions has remained limited. This presentation reviews a dec
ade of work using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the 18-kD
a translocator protein (TSPO)\, a marker associated with neuroimmune acti
vation\, to investigate inflammation across multiple chronic pain disorde
rs. Studies in chronic low back pain\, migraine\, fibromyalgia\, lumbar r
adiculopathy\, knee osteoarthritis and other disorders demonstrate that T
SPO PET signal is elevated in multiple etiologically distinct pain condit
ions. These findings suggest that neuroinflammatory processes are not uni
form\, but instead show disorder-specific and regionally specific pattern
 s. The presentation further extends TSPO PET beyond the brain\, highlight
ing signal in the spinal cord\, nerve roots\, dorsal root ganglia\, knee
joints\, and skull bone marrow. Together\, these observations motivate a
whole-person approach to studying inflammation in chronic pain\, integrat
 ing central\, peripheral\, and immune-system contributions.

DESCRIPTION:What in the brain drives answers to the question\, "Have you s
een this before?" or "How happy are you right now?". While different in m
any ways\, memory and mood are both forms of learning that happen continu
ously throughout our lives. To understand how the brain supports these my
sterious functions\, my lab combines investigations of human behavior\, m
easurements and manipulations of neural activity\, and computational mode
ling. One emphasis in our work is arriving at algorithmic (or mathematica
 l) descriptions of how populations of neurons signal memory and mood perc
epts that are intermingled with representations of other types. A complem
entary emphasis focuses on understanding how memory and mood are shaped f
 rom a dynamical systems perspective.

DESCRIPTION:I use the methods of cognitive neuroscience to address questio
ns about the interactions between perception\, attention\, memory\, and a
ction. I completed my Ph.D. with Tobias Egner at Duke\, and postdoctoral
research with Mark D'Esposito at UC Berkeley. In the years before grad sc
hool\, I worked in homeless counseling and mental health services. I then
went on to get a degree in Human Development from the University of Penn
sylvania\, studying attentional training regimes in a range of population
 s. This variety of experiences gave rise to the perspective that guides m
y research approach-that we cannot understand complex cognition without e
xamining how basic goal maintenance processes co-occur with other demands
that we face in daily life. My research therefore bridges across sub-dis
ciplines of cognitive neuroscience and psychology\, using a multi-modal a
pproach to examine the cognitive processes that help us achieve our momen
 t-to-moment goals.
