applied ecology\," developing new analytic approaches to applications of
immediate practical concern such as conservation planning. A hallmark of
his lab is the integration of field studies\, spatial analysis\, and simu

DESCRIPTION:"Enabling technology development and deployment for mitigating
human-caused global warming."\n\nPresented by: Dr. Eric Toone\n\nThe pro
duction of greenhouse gases is both directly and indirectly responsible f
or global warming\, and by now avoiding even a 2.0 C increase will requir
e extraordinary effort. A plethora of novel technologies across all sect
ors that produce greenhouse gases is today being advanced towards impactf
ul deployment. Such technologies are often supported in their earliest s
tages by venture capital. During the first decade of this Century cleant
ech investing resulted in the loss of between $25 and $50 B\, with little
to show for that investment by way of technology deployed at scale. Her
e we consider the specific challenges of CleanTech investing\, ways that
a current generation of CleanTech investing attempts to avoid those pitfa
lls\, and the most intractable challenges remaining in our attempts to av
oid the worst impacts of anthropogenic global warming.

DESCRIPTION:Deirdre Cooper Owens is an Associate Professor of History and
Africana Studies at the University of Connecticut. \n\nIn her talk\, hist
orian Deirdre Cooper Owens reveals the United States' genealogical origin
s regarding not only modern gynecology but also the history of reproducti
ve medicine. She explains how the institution of U.S. slavery was directl
y linked to the creation of reproductive medicine in this nation. Dr. Coo
per Owens provides context for how and why physicians denied black women
their full humanity\, yet valued them as "medical superbodies" highly sui
ted for experimentation. Engaging with 19th-century ideas about so-called
racial difference\, Dr. Cooper Owens sheds light on the contemporary leg
acy of medical racism and what we should do to create birthing and medica
l equity.\n\nA popular public speaker and writer\, Dr. Cooper Owens has p
ublished both scholarly and popular pieces on issues that concern African
American historical experiences ranging from slavery to contemporary rep
roductive justice. She is an Organization of American Historians' (OAH) D
istinguished Lecturer and a past American College of Obstetricians and Gy
necologists Fellow. Her highly acclaimed first book is Medical Bondage: R
ace\, Gender and the Origins of American Gynecology. She is currently wo
rking on a biography of Harriet Tubman that examines the revolutionary th
rough the lens of disability\, and a monograph about the history of race\
, medical discovery\, and the C-section.\n\nSee More Event Information be

DESCRIPTION:Join Science & Society in celebrating the release of Moral AI
And How We Get There\, written by Jana Schaich Borg\, Walter Sinnott-Arms
trong\, and Vincent Conitzer. In recognition of this release\, the author
s will be hosting an hour-long panel where panelists will comment\, criti
cize\, or ask questions about any part of the book while the authors dive
deep into the material.\n\nOur expert panelists include:\n\nBen Eva with
the Duke's Department of Philosophy\nThomas Hofweber with the UNC's Depa
rtment of Philosophy\nCynthia Rudin with Duke's Department of Computer Sc
ience\nLee Tiedrich with Duke's Pratt School of Engineering\nFollowing th
e panel\, join us for a catered reception with the authors and panelists.
\n\nMORE ABOUT THE BOOK\nIn Moral AI\, world-renowned researchers in mora
l psychology\, philosophy\, and artificial intelligence - Jana Schaich Bo
rg\, Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and Vincent Conitzer - tackle these thorny
issues head-on. Writing lucidly and calmly\, they lay out the recent adva
nces in this still nascent field\, peeling away the exaggeration and misl
eading arguments. Instead\, they offer clear examinations of the moral co
ncerns at the heart of AI programs\, from racial equity to personal priva
cy\, fake news to autonomous weaponry. Ultimately\, they argue that artif
icial intelligence can be built and used safely and ethically\, but that
its potential cannot be achieved without careful reflection on the values
we wish to imbue it with. This is an essential primer for any thinking p

DESCRIPTION:A film screening of the documentary\, Israelism\, followed by
a Q&A with Simone Zimmerman\, a protagonist of the film and co-founder of
  IfNotNow.\n\nTuesday\, Jan 21 \n7pm (doors at 6:30pm)\n\nLove Auditorium
 \, LSRC\nDuke University \n\nAbout the film:\n\nTwo young American Jews -
Simone Zimmerman and Eitan - are raised to defend the state of Israel at
all costs. Eitan joins the Israeli military. Simone supports Israel on '
the other battlefield:' America's college campuses. When they witness Isr
ael's oppression of the Palestinian people with their own eyes\, they are
horrified and heartbroken - the Jewish institutions that raised them not
only lied\, but built their Jewish identity around that lie. \n\nThey jo
in the movement of young American Jews battling the old guard over Israel
's centrality in American Judaism\, and demanding freedom for the Palesti
nian people. Their stories reveal a generational divide in the American J
ewish community as more young Jews question the narratives their synagogu
es and Hebrew school teachers taught them as children. \n\nThe film also
features voices like Jacqui\, a Jewish educator who believes "Judaism is
Israel and Israel is Judaism"\, and former Anti-Defamation League Preside
nt Abe Foxman\, who claims voices like Simone and Eitan's represent a sma
ll minority. Thought leaders like Peter Beinart\, Jeremy Ben-Ami\, Noura
Erakat\, Cornel West and Noam Chomsky also weigh in.\n\nDirected by two f
irst-time Jewish filmmakers who share a similar story to the film's prota
 gonists\, Israelism is produced by Peabody-winner and 4-time Emmy-nominee
Daniel J. Chalfen (Bad Axe\, Boycott)\, as well as Palestinian-American
producer Nadia Saah\, who has led strategy on films such as the Oscar Nom
inated Omar and 5 Broken Cameras. Israelism is also executive Produced by
2-time Emmy-winner Brian A. Kates (Marvelous Ms. Maisel\, Succession) an
d edited by Emmy-winner Tony Hale (The Story of Plastic)\, Israelism uniq
uely explores how Jewish attitudes towards Israel are changing dramatical
ly\, with massive consequences for the region and for Judaism itself.

DESCRIPTION:Robots are traditionally designed with fixed physical hardware
and control policies that make them specialized for repetitive tasks and
structured environments. This talk discusses foundational work toward ro
bots that "evolve on demand\," morphing their bodies and adapting their b
ehaviors to accommodate multiple tasks in diverse environments. First\, I
will introduce robotic structures made from stiffness-changing materials
that enable myriad shape transformations. Next\, I will discuss a compac
t sensor capable of detecting a wide variety of stimuli relevant to shape
morphing robots. I will then present models that describe shape morphing
systems' highly nonlinear geometric and material behavior\, allowing for
more efficient inverse design of bespoke morphing components. These foun
dational topics inform the second part of the talk-the interplay of a rob
ot's shape and control policy. Here\, I will demonstrate how tuning shape
can boost robotic performance and unlock entirely new capabilities in lo
 comotion and combined locomotion-manipulation tasks.
