DESCRIPTION:There is widespread concern that social media platforms have c
reated filter bubbles that reinforce peoples' pre-existing views and prev
ent them from being exposed to those who do not share them. Though many p
eople believe popping filter bubbles will reduce political polarization o
n social media\, this talk will present multiple field experiments that c
hallenge this common wisdom. I will first describe two studies that emplo
yed bots\, network analysis\, and quantitative surveys in order to show t
hat popping peoples' filter bubbles makes them more polarized\; not less.
Drawing upon in-depth interview and text-based data\, I will argue that
this backfire effect occurs because of an identity-threat mechanism linke
d to both core theories in social science as well as recent advances in n
euroscience. Finally\, I will describe ongoing research currently being c
onducted within my Polarization Lab that experimentally manipulates the i
dentity of people deliberating on a de novo social media platform in orde
r to further test this hypothesis. The results may be of interest to thos
e who study political communication\, social media\, or the emerging fiel
d of computational social science. This session is part of the Duke+Data
Science (+DS) program in-person learning experiences (IPLEs). To learn mo

DESCRIPTION:There is a big data revolution happening in astrophysics as th
e next generation of telescopes are coming online\, with 20 terabytes of
data coming from a single telescope per night. From this large amount of
data\, scientists are trying to find subtle clues that can help uncover t
he most profound mysteries in the universe. Here\, I will focus on some o
f the machine learning and deep learning techniques that have been employ
ed to classify different types of stars\, galaxies and transients. I will
go over recent successes and challenges\, and show off the work I do\, d
emonstrated by one of the latest and most popular Kaggle machine-learning
competitions ever called 'PLAsTiCC Astronomical Classification: Can you
help make sense of the Universe?' This session is part of the Duke+Data S

DESCRIPTION:The Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity invites you to
our capstone event for the Spring 2024 Global Inequality Research Initiat
ive (GIRI) cohort! \n\nIn Spring 2024\, the Global Inequality Research In
itiative (GIRI) focuses on "Gender and Development". In this course\, stu
dents are going to examine how gender influences and is influenced by soc
ial and economic development processes.\n\nThe course will begin by provi
ding an overview of gender inequalities in various aspects of social and
economic life around the world. This will include an exploration of the d
isparities that exist in areas such as education\, healthcare\, and work.
Following this\, students will explore the concept of development with a
specific emphasis on how gender is incorporated into the development dis
course. We will also study diverse approaches to gender and development a
nd their evolution over time.\n\nAt this capstone event\, students within
the Spring 2024 GIRI cohort will present their original research project
s anchored within topics of gender and development. This event is open to
the public and free to attend.
