DESCRIPTION:Choosing "Home": Diasporic Return Migration to Accra\, Ghana\n
  \nDubie Toa-Kwapong\nMellon Sawyer PhD Dissertating Fellow\nCultural Ant
 hropology\nDuke University\n\nFebruary 24\, 2022\n5:00 - 6:00 pm320 Langu
ages and by Zoom. \n\nThis is a hybrid event with limited in-person capac
ity. Registration is required for attending on Zoom and in-person.\n\nWe
have taken special measures to ensure that social distancing measures are
followed\, including de-densifying and marking seats. Masks are required
in all Duke Buildings.\n\n\nDubie's research is centered on the experien
ces of contemporary diasporic return migrants (or returnees) to Accra\, t
he capital city of Ghana. A growing group of diasporans are choosing to m
ove "back" to the African continent and choosing Accra as their site of r
eturn. This project explores the relationship between emotion and choice
in contemporary return migrations of Afrodiasporans to Accra\, focusing o
n the impact of nostalgia\, as produced by both first-hand and second-han
d memories. \n \nDubie Toa-Kwapong is a graduate student in the Duke Univ
ersity Cultural Anthropology Ph.D. program. She earned a B.A. in Anthropo
logy from Macalester College. Her current research on return migration bu
ilds on her undergraduate honors thesis\, "Taking It Back to the Motherla

to the Norwegian cultural and political periodical\, Syn og Segn.\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:British interest in Russian authors had already waned before C
onstance Garnett's death in 1946\, but during the Cold War (inter)cultur
al curiosity reignited\, creating opportunities both for literature and f
or women translators. Hamish Hamilton\, Hutchinson and Penguin in the UK\
, Dutton and Harper and Row in the US\, Foreign Languages Publishing Hous
e in Moscow independently commissioned new translations of the Russian Cl
assics and British\, American and emigrée Russian women assumed roles as
literary translators. Some lesser-known female translators were commissio
ned for their cultural\, linguistic\, and literary capital and\, in retur
n\, literary translation provided employment\, self-validation\, and prof
essional respectability. It also presented a platform for ideological act
ivism including\, on occasion\, a smokescreen for (political or personal)
intrigue. In this lecture\, Dr. McAteer will be drawing on her latest mi
crohistorical research to spotlight the professional careers (the practic
 es\, networks\, tribulations\, and achievements) and the complex socio-po
litical contexts of a selection of forgotten female translators who acted
as cultural gatekeepers between Russia\, the UK\, and US during the Cold
  War.

DESCRIPTION:Four translators of Russian literature discuss women in transl
ation\, their career trajectories\, how and why it started\, and how they
view the craft and its wider benefits to the cultural community. What do
women bring - historically and now - to the art and craft of translation
? What social and economic factors affect their work? In what ways do tra
nslators' personalities and identities affect the production and receptio
n of their work? Migration and emigration has always been central to the
history of translation and cultural exchange. How has the war in Ukraine
changed the world of Russophone literary translation over the past year?
In our time\, with many writers\, critics\, and readers uprooted from the
ir homeland\, how does translation play a part for good? How do translato
rs' voices provide a voice for challenge and change?

DESCRIPTION:The Melting Sublime: From Georg Forster to Ivínguak' Stork Høe
gh\n\n\nThis talk explores the entanglement of law\, culture\, and aesthe
tics in the polar regions. As climate change reshapes Arctic and Antarcti
c landscapes\, traditional aesthetic foundations of environmental law are
rapidly eroding. By tracing shifting representations of icebergs from th
e eighteenth century to contemporary Indigenous art\, this project develo
ps the concept of "the melting sublime" to reimagine aesthetic value in t
