DESCRIPTION:The onset of the #BlackLivesMatter Era has opened scrutiny ove
r what exactly should be police's goals and responsibilities in today's s

y navigating these efforts? \n\nJoin three authors of new books engaging
these questions: \n\n-Tony Cheng\, The Policing Machine: Enforcement\, En
 dorsements\, & the Illusion of Public Input\n-Michael Sierra- Arévalo\, T
he Danger Imperative: Violence\, Death and the Soul of Policing\n-Michell
e Phelps\, The Minneapolis Reckoning: Race\, Violence\, and the Politics
of Policing in America\n\nModerated by Andrea Leverentz\, Professor of So

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful discussion on The Perversity of Inte
rnational Law in China's Territorial Disputes\, featuring Jacques deLisle
\, Stephen A. Cozen Professor of Law & Professor of Political Science\, a
nd Director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China. Internatio
nal legal rules are typically designed to reduce conflict\, promote stabi
lity\, and deter disruptive change. However\, in the geopolitically sensi
tive context of China's territorial disputes\, these same rules can have
 unintended consequences\, fostering escalation\, uncertainty\, and instab
ility-particularly in matters of territorial sovereignty\, maritime juris
diction\, and self-determination. This analysis extends beyond territoria
l issues\, offering insights into China's economic and political strategi
es. Lunch will be provided on a first-come\, first-served basis. This eve
nt is co-sponsored by APSI and ChinaLab@DukeLaw. For inquiries\, please c
 ontact zhang@law.duke.edu.
