DESCRIPTION:6 PM Discussion in the Lecture Hall\n\n7 PM Reception & book s
igning\n\nPlease join Duke Professor Gennifer Weisenfeld for a discussion
with Professor Paul Jaskot about her new book Gas Mask Nation: Visualizi
ng Civil Air Defense in Wartime Japan (University of Chicago Press\, 2023
\, $60.\n\nA fascinating look at the anxious pleasures of Japanese visual
culture during World War II.\n\nAirplanes\, gas masks\, and bombs were c
ommon images in wartime Japan. Yet amid these emblems of anxiety\, tasty
caramels were offered to children with paper gas masks as promotional giv
eaways\, and magazines featured everything from attractive models in the
latest civil defense fashion to futuristic weapons. Gas Mask Nation explo
res the multilayered construction of an anxious yet perversely pleasurabl
e visual culture of Japanese civil air defense-or bōkū-through a diverse
range of artworks\, photographs\, films and newsreels\, magazine illustra
 tions\, postcards\, cartoons\, advertising\, fashion\, everyday goods\, g
overnment posters\, and state propaganda. Gennifer Weisenfeld reveals the
immersive aspects of this culture\, in which Japan's imperial subjects w
ere mobilized to regularly perform highly orchestrated civil air defense
drills throughout the country. Gennifer Weisenfeld is Professor of Art\,
Art History & Visual Studies and Paul Jaskot is Chair and Professor of Ar
t\, Art History & Visual Studies.

popular\, but critical race scholars often dismiss them as simplistic and

Asian racism in a manner that recognizes the complexities involved. The g
oal in fighting such racism is not merely to lessen hate against one grou
p but to encourage social change in ways that many can benefit from.\n\nE

namese refugee center in provincial England. Kaplan will explore how the
field of critical memory studies can inform fiction\, as well as the stre
ngths and limitations of fiction in conveying multicultural borrowing and
conflict.\n\nEVENT DETAILS\n\nJoin Brett Ashley Kaplan\, professor of co

r Museum of Art (2001 Campus Drive\, Durham) on November 8. A public rece
ption will take place immediately after the lecture.\n\nThis event is fre
e and open to the public. Free parking is available at the Nasher Museum
of Art.\n\nABOUT BRETT ASHLEY KAPLAN\n\nBrett Ashley Kaplan directs the I
