DESCRIPTION:The Department of German Studies\, in collaboration with Duke
Election Exchange\, invites you to join us for a watch party as Germany h
olds its 2025 federal elections (Bundestagswahl). This event offers a uni
que opportunity to engage with German politics and culture\, providing in
sights into one of the world's most influential parliamentary systems.\nA
ttendees will have the chance to learn about key political issues\, under
stand the German electoral system\, and discuss the potential implication
s of the election results for Germany's future and its transatlantic rela

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Robotic assisted surgery (RAS) systems provide enha
nced dexterity and precision but still require surgeons to control every
motion\, leading to long procedures and variable outcomes. While autonomo
us robotics has revolutionized manufacturing and aviation\, soft tissue s
urgery presents unique challenges including unpredictable deformations an
d complex perception requirements. My research transforms teleoperated ro
botic surgery into autonomous systems to improve patient outcomes through
increased precision\, speed\, and reduced human error. This presentation
will discuss our novel approaches to autonomous soft tissue surgery\, in
cluding our robotic system for supervised autonomous laparoscopic anastom
osis and our latest work: the hierarchical surgical robot transformer (SR
T-H)\, recently published in Science Robotics\, which enables end-to-end
learning of complex surgical phases of procedures\n\n \nDR. ALEX KRIEGER
is Associate Professor and Carol Croft Linde Faculty Scholar in Mechanica
l Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He leads research in autonomou
s surgical robotics\, including the smart tissue autonomous robot (STAR)
and language conditioned imitation learning for surgical automation. Prof
essor Krieger is an NSF CAREER award recipient and inventor of over thirt
y patents licensed to companies including Intuitive Surgical\, Siemens\,
and Philips. Prior to Hopkins\, he held positions at University of Maryla
