DESCRIPTION:APSI's summer book club is back by popular demand. This year\,
the books have been chosen to set the stage for APSI's annual keynote ta
lk (November 2026) which will feature author and professor Viet Thanh Ngu
yen.\n\nProfessor Eileen Cheng-yin Chow (Duke) concludes our two-book seq
uence with Nguyen's newest book\, To Save and to Destroy\, which was shor
tlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism.\n\nThe d
iscussion will take place online\, so members of the community near and f
ar are welcome to join.\n\nBe sure to register via Zoom (https://duke.zoo
 m.us/meeting/register/0zQgAwqnRFai8lhl1I8x-g)\n\nFrom the publisher\nThe
essays here\, delivered originally as the prestigious Norton Lectures\, p
roffer a new answer to a classic literary question: What does the outside
r mean to literary writing? Over the course of six captivating and moving
chapters\, Nguyen explores the idea of being an outsider through lenses
 that are\, by turns\, literary\, historical\, political\, and familial.\n
\nEach piece moves between writers who influenced Nguyen's craft and weav
es in the haunting story of his late mother's mental illness. Nguyen unfo
lds the novels and nonfiction of Herman Melville\, F. Scott Fitzgerald\,
Ralph Ellison\, William Carlos Williams\, and Maxine Hong Kingston\, unti
l aesthetic theories give way to pressing concerns raised by war and poli
tics. What is a writer's responsibility in a time of violence? Should we
celebrate fiction that gives voice to the voiceless-or do we confront the
forces that render millions voiceless in the first place? What are the b
urdens and pleasures of the "minor" writer in any society? Unsatisfied wi
th the modest inclusion accorded to "model minorities" such as Asian Amer
icans\, Nguyen sets the agenda for a more radical and disquieting solidar
ity with those whose lives have been devastated by imperialism and foreve
 r wars.\n\nAbout the moderator\nEileen Cheng-yin Chow is Associate Profes
sor of the Practice in Chinese and Japanese Cultural Studies at Duke Univ
ersity\, and one of the founding directors of Story Lab at Duke. She is D
irector of Graduate Studies for APSI and a founding/core faculty member o
f Duke Asian American and Diaspora Studies program.

DESCRIPTION:Visualization is a powerful way to reveal patterns in data\, a
ttract attention\, and get your message across to an audience quickly and
clearly. But\, there are many steps in that journey from exploration to
information to influence\, and many choices to make when putting it all t
ogether to tell your story. I will cover some basic guidelines for effect
ive visualization\, point out a few common pitfalls to avoid\, and run th
rough a critique and iterations of an existing visualization to help you
start seeing better choices beyond the software defaults. This event is o

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the many different ethical issues t
hat can arise with data management and sharing and strategies to address
those issues. Topics covered will include a framework for analyzing ethic
al cases\, the use of secondary data in research\, working with human par
ticipants\, senstive ecosystems\, AI\, and the impact of laws on data sha
ring. We will also explore the application of diversity and equity princi
ples to open science and data sharing. For instance\, how can researchers
ethically collect\, handle\, and share data from certain communities\, s
uch as Indigenous People? This workshop will contain both lecture and sma
ll group discussion where participants will engage with key ethical conce
pts and apply those concepts to a case-study. This event is open to non-D
uke participants. This workshop is eligible for 2 hours of Graduate Schoo
l RCR Credit (GS714) and 200-level faculty and staff RCR.

DESCRIPTION:When I need to convert a table from wide format into tall (unp
ivot) or combine two spreadsheets by matching rows based on a key column
(JOIN/merge)\, I used to turn to Python\, R\, or OpenRefine. It turns out
you can do both of these operations right in Excel using Power Query! In
this workshop I'll lead you through a quick example using survey data\,
where I unpivot and merge both the text and numeric versions of responses
into a single table that's ready for analysis and visualization. Plus\,
I will show you how to summarize data in a way that surmounts a limitatio
n of pivot tables for visualization. This event is open to non-Duke parti

DESCRIPTION:AI has become a reasonable tool for producing data visualizati
ons without coding or learning Excel\, Tableau\, or other software\, but
expertise is still required to guide it to an effective chart that's goin
g to tell your story to an audience. In this introductory workshop we'll
show you an example of uploading public data to ChatGPT\, prompting past
the initial (usually pretty bad) first draft\, then finishing by download
ing the script that produced the final chart as a record for reproducibil
ity. We'll also discuss strategies for checking the results and things to
watch out for so you can verify the LLM's output. This event is open to
 non-Duke participants.

DESCRIPTION:If AI can summarize hundreds of papers in seconds\, what's lef
t for you (the researcher) to do? In this RCR session\, we'll examine the
growing landscape of AI-generated scholarly content (including so-called
"AI slop") and explore how it affects literature reviews and scholarly p
ublication. We'll examine the limitations and biases that generative AI c
an introduce or amplify (e.g. hallucinations\, sycophancy\, and opaque pr
ovenance) and discuss practical strategies for avoiding them. We'll also
discuss emerging publisher expectations regarding transparency and disclo
sure of AI use by authors. As AI changes what expertise looks like\, atte
ndees will learn strategies for critically assessing AI-generated outputs
\, recognizing potential biases\, and making informed decisions about whe
n and how AI can be used responsibly in the research process.\n\nLearning
Objectives: \n\n- Develop an awareness of how AI-generated content is im
pacting scholarly literature\n- Practice strategies for critically assess
ing AI-generated content for hallucination and bias\n- Learn best practic
es and approaches to disclosing AI use in research and writing\n\nZoom in
formation will be sent via email to registered attendees the day before.
This workshop will not be recorded and slides will not be distributed.\n\
nThis workshop is eligible for 2 hours of Graduate School RCR Credit (GS7
14). To receive RCR credit\, attendees will be expected to attend the ent
ire session and participate in interactive learning activities throughout

DESCRIPTION:The sharing of research data has become increasingly important
to federal and private funders and journal publishers for a number of re

never used Illustrator before\, this workshop will skill you up for rend
ering diagrams with a clean\, professional look\, including powerful feat
ures that PowerPoint doesn't have. I'll also point out differences betwee
n Affinity and Illustrator and PowerPoint along the way for those transfe
