DESCRIPTION:Tableau Public (available for both Windows and Mac) is incredi
bly useful free software that allows individuals to quickly and easily ex
plore their data with a wide variety of visual representations\, as well
as create interactive web-based visualization dashboards. This workshop w
ill focus on using Tableau Public to create data visualizations\, startin
g with an overview of how the program thinks about data\, common data man
ipulation and loading\, and the terminology used. Activities will include
a sample data visualization and mapping project\, which will give people
hands-on experience using Tableau's basic chart types and dashboard crea
tion tools. We will also discuss publishing to the Tableau Public web ser
ver and related services and tools\, like the full Tableau Desktop applic
ation (free for full-time students). This workshop is designed for beginn
ers who might be comfortable with data and spreadsheets\, but have no exp
erience with Tableau\, are curious about what it can do\, and want to get
a quick introduction so they can start playing on their own. This event
 is open to non-Duke participants.

DESCRIPTION:Working with source texts is a key element of nearly all schol
arly writing. Such work involves many elements including choosing sources
 \, summary\, paraphrase\, quotation\, and citation. Students' knowledge o
f these practices is often rudimentary and their attempts to deploy these
skills often lack rhetorical purpose. This session gives an overview of
the challenges students face in working with sources and explores strateg
ies for helping students approach sources effectively as writers.

DESCRIPTION:The importance of reproducibility\, replication\, and transpar
ency in the research endeavor is increasingly discussed in academia. This
workshop will introduce the concept of "reproducibility" and foundationa
l strategies that can increase the reproducibility of your work particula
rly related to organization\, documentation\, literate coding techniques\
, version control\, and archiving data and code for future access and use
. We will also present a protocol\, the TIER protocol\, as a tool that gr
aduate students or others can use that are first approaching reproducibil
ity. In the second half of the workshop we will present a potential end-t
o-end reproducible workflow using git\, RStudio\, Binder\, and Zenodo to
demonstrate some of the concepts in practice. This event is open to non-D

DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, data has become a source of socioeconomic an
d geopolitical power\, and the concept of anticipatory diplomacy is incre
asingly taking the center stage. This is because it is no longer sufficie
nt for nations and organizations to confront and react to crises as they
arise. Instead\, such bodies have to anticipate any potential conflicts\,
risks\, and challenges before they escalate into full-blown meltdown cri
ses. In this paper\, we delve into how anticipatory diplomacy was discuss
ed during the NSPN Data Diplomacy Series in the context of data governanc
e\, transnational data management\, and privacy protection\, with key tak
eaways and case studies showcasing the growing importance and significanc
e of anticipatory diplomacy in such processes. \n\nAbout the Speakers: \

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rajendra Morey's career as a clinician-scientist has been
motivated by a keen interest in understanding the structural and function
al brain changes associated with neuropsychiatric disorders\, as well as
the effects of environment\, behavior\, and treatments. He has used funct
ional MRI to elucidate how PTSD symptoms alter the balance of prefrontal-
limbic signaling during tasks of executive function\, emotion distraction
\, symptom provocation\, and memory. He has conducted several methodologi
cal studies with MRI examining morphometry and volumetry in the medial te
mporal lobe and subcortical structures to help guide investigators in sel
ecting brain segmentation strategies. His recent work in PTSD has investi
gated associative fear learning as a model system for understanding funct
ional brain disruptions in PTSD and trauma. These studies have involved f
ear generalization and extinction generalization paradigms. Other researc
h has focused on investigating promising genetic modulators of brain dysf
unction in PTSD. Dr. Morey has funding from a VA Merit Grant (CX002293) t
o map subject-specific structural and functional connectivity to parse th
e unique contributions of subconcussive blast\, and mild TBI is to. In hi
s role leading an international Consortium (PTSD Neuroimaging Working Gro
up in the Psychiatric Genetics Consortium) he has formulated a blueprint
to identify replicable genetic associations and new insights into the bio
logical underpinnings of PTSD at a scope that is unprecedented in the fie
ld of traumatic stress. These efforts\, which are funded by an NIH RO1 gr
ants (MH111671 and MH129832)\, have triggered a renewed impetus and a sha
rpened focus on investigating structural and functional brain differences
\, their genetic determinants\, environmental modulators\, and investigat
ing the genetic vulnerability to the effects of trauma and the onset of P
TSD. He has also been actively investigating competing harmonization of n
euroimaging data to facilitate global scale neuroscience collaboration.\n

DESCRIPTION:Research data have value beyond their original purpose and by
sharing or "publishing" your data you can support open science\, reproduc
ibility\, and future innovation. This workshop will explore strategies an
d best practices for formally publishing your data in a data repository.
Topics covered will include new modes of publishing in academia\, the use
of data and metadata standards to support interoperability and harmoniza
tion\, an overview of repository options and key features\, examples of d
isciplinary repositories\, and data publishing methods to increase the im
pact of research projects and support the FAIR Guiding Principles (i.e.\,
  Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, and Reusable). Participants will
also practice finding and assessing data repositories via a hands-on exe
rcise. This event is open to non-Duke participants.

DESCRIPTION:*****This talk has been indefinitely postponed*****\n\nThe Nor
thern Wei Dynasty (386-534 CE) began as a confederation founded and gover
ned by ethnically non-Han peoples from Inner Asia whose homeland is locat
ed in the province of Inner Mongolia in today's People's Republic of Chin
 a. These people-known to history as the Taghbach-likely spoke a para-Mong
olic language. They were horseback-riding nomads who worshipped an Inner
Asian Sky God\, but who\, in the form of the Northern Wei\, settled in th
e heartlands of the prior Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) and began to rule
their polity as "Emperors\," just as did the rulers of the Han.\n\nThis t
alk will focus on the last independent ruler of the Northern Wei\, a Han
woman often referred to as Empress Dowager Ling (d. 528) who was a public
patron of Buddhism and who was assassinated by her political rivals. In
exploring the context of ethnic\, cultural\, and gender diversity in the
Northern Wei and engaging the context of political instability in the per
iod\, we will survey the many ways in which Northern Wei rulers and royal
s created a hybrid system of state ritual that drew from divergent cultur
al sources and we will ask just how effective their system was in maintai
ning political order.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nProf. Stephanie Balkwill is
interested in the literary and public lives of Buddhist women who lived i
n what is now China between the 4th and 6th centuries. Her research engag
es the question of whether or not Buddhist affiliation provided new socia
l and educational opportunities for women in early medieval China\, and\,
in turn\, argues that women were influential in the early spread of the
Buddhist tradition throughout East Asia. She is currently undertaking two
major research projects in this area. The first examines the political l
ives of Buddhist women in the Northern Wei dynasty and puts forth the the
sis that the Northern Wei offers the earliest known case study that we ha
ve for the confluence of women\, Buddhism\, and political power that is s
een across East Asia in the medieval period. The second project examines
the prominence of female-to-male sex transformation narratives in Mahāyān
a Buddhist texts within the context of the gendered practice of the tradi
tion in early medieval China.\n\nAt present\, she is working on revisions
to a book-length study of Northern Wei Empress Dowager Ling\, entitled:
"Numinous Under Heaven: The Rise and Fall of a Female\, Buddhist Regent i
 n 6th Century Luoyang."
